Patrick Chan

Dear all,
I am new here and I have followed the thread for a little while. It's so nice to see such support and genuine interest for Patrick! :D I "discovered" him during this years world championships in Helsinki. I am a newbie when it comes to figure skating, but I am generally interested in sports. I watched the mens short program since I saw that a swedish guy was in the competition and I thought it could be interesting to see how it went for him, (I am from Sweden myself) but I ended up watching the whole competition! And the skater that I thought stood out, and who's short program moved me the most was Patrick's. That's how it all started. I've watched videos on Youtube of his previous programs etc and tried to gather as much info as much about him and his skating to "catch up" on what I have missed so far. I am looking forward to following and taking part of this thread.

Welcome @vague! I am sorry that I am late to the welcoming party but I've had a crazy day on the ice! I hope you enjoy your stay here and post often! :)

600 pages! You guys have been busy! Next goal is to get to 1000 before the Olympics. That's more than doable, right?

erm... 1000? haha in 10 months? i don't want to be a party pooper but we will need a lot of help ;)

what matters is that we keep the fan fest a happy place for everyone... what i like about this fan fest in particular is that we have nice conversation, everyone feels included and it is not just a collection of random links or media. We do express ourselves, share with one another.

If it gives us 100 or 200 more pages before the olympics, great... :) but if it gave us just 50 pages of quality posts, i'd still be happy. What's nice about this thread is that one can read it from the beginning ( I have) and live through the emotions of Patrick's fans throughout the ups and downs of his career.

Thank you so much for the warm welcoming Violet Bliss and 4everchan. I've noticed that you are a bunch of crazy and fun people (don't get me wrong - this is meant in the best of ways :)), and I am glad that I'm now one of you, and happy to be your Sweden Bureau! Oh, and I will definitely take some part in the swooning. I mean, you can't help but notice that Mr Chan is a veeery handsome guy!
I did unfortunately not see Patrick in Helsinki, but on tv. After seeing "Blackbird" I just had to watch the final/long programmes. I really liked A Journey too, Patrick's so expressive - a real artist.
I know I read a description here of that choreo, that it is like a journey, with its turns, twists and stops, new beginnings etc. (was that you 4everchan who wrote that?) After reading that and seeing A Journey again - I just love it even more. So beautiful.
I've seen that you post what's "next" or "coming up" for Patrick (competitions, shows etc) and that's great! Oh, and another thing, please have patience with me - I've seen that you sometimes use abbreviations that I don't understand sometimes and I will probably ask you guys what it means. I'm a newbie when it comes to figure skating, but I pick up things fast! :con2:

vague please make sure you always ask if we use abbreviations... see i have no idea about some of them too ;) IOW?? (what does that mean VB?)

sometimes we use figure skating abbreviations, like 4F (my favourite... quadruple flip)
sometimes it's forum slang like ETA (edited to add)
or sometimes it's simply Golden Skate (GS) forum jargon like when we talk about pairs V/M would be Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir.

For Journey, make sure you watch the version from Nationals... clean skate!!! YAY. What was nice about Helsinki's is that Patrick rotated all the big jumps.. only stepped out on the 3rd quad and missed his combo... it was very costly in terms of points as he lost a whole combination... which would have given bronze most likely if landed... but it was something Patrick had never done : rotate 3 quads and keep his bum away from the ice doing so.

Finally , I hope you join us watching WTT (world team trophy). We are excited to find out if Patrick will attempt another first : 2 quad blackbird

Abbreviations I use because I think they are very common:

IOW = In other words

AFAIK = As far as I know

IIRC = If I remember correctly

YMMV = Your mileage may vary

ITA = In total agreement. I use emoticons instead these days.

YOLO is common these days, for You Only Live Once.

ETA ;): BTW = By the way

I've always had such trouble remembering what IIRC means. Which is ridiculous, considering.

Welcome to our Patrick fan support group! We are delighted to have you here! :agree:

Dear Vague,

I would suggest to you to visit vivley's blog http://pcskatingfan.com/

She has done so much work for all of us fans already.... I find it very useful especially when I want to see Patrick at his best . The videos here do that ... (I am sure Vivley will add the SP from Worlds at one point in there but I think it's on the blog already in the WORLDS posts....)

Aw, thanks! I updated my YouTube video playlists with the SP from Worlds!

Now, remember you had listed the dates for all of the Grand Prix events next season? Here is the official letter from the ISU. It looks like the Grand Prix Final (GPF) will be in Japan:

Wow, the schedule is different from previous years, with Russia being the earliest, and Skate America last, right after American Thanksgiving! Cup of China will be exactly one week after Skate Canada! :eeking: It's going to be interesting to see where Patrick goes!

i would bet my chiddyundies that Patrick will go to Skate Canada... the fed always invites the National champions. This would mean NO for Patrick at China and Russia.

He could go to France NHK or SA.. I have the feeling that NHK would be exciting for Patrick as he only was there once 10 years ago and never got a medal there, only GP where he hasn't won a medal. I doubt he would go to SA because SA will pick Nathan and they are in the same seed group.

NHK would mean competing against Yuzu or Shoma...

France? Who knows who will be there... but Javi and Patrick cannot compete there or anywhere at the same time this year as they are in the same seed group....

Aaw, thanks Ic3Rabbit and vively! :D

I know it's a long time until next season, but when is it usually announced which GP events a skater will go to? I guess you can't do them all? ;)

skaters, well the top ones like Patrick, do 2 GPs. It's announced in June.

I hope it will be France! If TDF is again in Bercy/Paris I am going for sure. :luv17: I will never fly to Bordeaux again. :disapp:

As long as France doesn't give coaster medals again...

What does seed group mean and why can't they compete at the same time if they are in the same group? :scratch2:

The top 6 ranked skaters are called seeded. Those in the same 1- 3 or 4 -6 group do not compete against each other in the same GP (Grand Prix) event to enhance the possibility that the top skaters will advance reasonably fairly to the GPF (Grand Prix Final). The top 3 can choose where they compete though they usually compete in the event hosted by their fed (skating federation), thus Patrick always goes to Skate Canada and another event that is not back to back with SC, usually SA (Skate America) and COC (Cup of China). Occasionally the order of the events are changed from the usual, giving him a chance to compete in an event he normally does not go. E.g. (For Example), he competed in COC for the first time last year, winning one of his two GP gold medals there to advance to the GPF. Patrick usually skates at COR (Cup of Russia, formerly Rostelecom Cup) or TDF (Trophée de France), formerly TEB (Trophée Éric Bompard).

Skaters can qualify to compete in one or two GP events and are invited by the host fed though the preferences of the top seeds are usually honoured. A host fed also gets to place a total of 3 skaters/teams of their choice for each discipline (Men, Ladies, Pairs, and Ice Dance), from their own country of course, to participate. This gives an advantage/opportunity to lower ranked skaters from the 6 hosting feds.

I think it's very likely that Patrick ends up at NHK. Javier will almost certainly be at TDF and since they are seeded together that won't work. Also Patrick won TDF in 2013 with amazing skates just before Sochi and I would hate to think of history repeating itself... Since we all know what happend just a few months later.
