What is COP and BV?
COP = Code of Points, the current judging system where skaters accumulate points for various elements in each program and the skater with the most points wins. It is also known as the International Judging System, or IJS. Before 2005, the 6.0 system was used to judge figure skating, a system that had nothing to do with points; rather, placements were what mattered (I'll let someone else explain 6.0 better though).

BV = Base Value - the amount of points each technical element is worth. Add those values together and you get the total base value of a program. For example. a triple axel is worth 8.5 points, a quad toeloop is worth 10.3 and a quad salchow is worth 10.5, so if those were the only 3 elements a skater did, their total Base Value for that program would be 29.3 points. Essentially, the harder the element, the more points it's worth, so skaters should go for the hardest elements they are capable of to get the most points. For some perspective, Patrick's Base Value in the free skate in 2014 was 82.77 points. At Worlds this year, Patrick's Base Value in the free skate was 87.15. Yuzuru Hanyu won Worlds this year with 103.43 Base Value points in the free skate. The highest Base Value ever given for one program so far was Nathan Chen's 112.87.

I hope that helps. Ask away if you have more questions. :)

ETA: Do you know what PCS means or should I explain that too?

COP = Code Of Points figure skating scoring system, as opposed to the previous 6.0 system.

BV = Base Value in points assigned to each technical element in figure skating by the ISU (International Skating Union which governs both figure and speed skating).

BV + GOE (Grades Of Execution given by the judges) = score for each technical element.

TES (Total Element Score) = The total points of all executed technical elements, i.e. all BV + all GOE.

PCS = Program Component Score, comprised of SS (Skating Skills), TR (Transitions), PE (Performance), CO (Composition), and IN (Interpretation of Music).

TES + PCS = TSS (Total Segment Score) the placement deciding score.

See them in this Protocol for WTT Men Short Program.

my thoughts...

Patrick had a mission here... Attempt the new layout : 4t-3t, 4S and then quite late in the program 3A.

On paper, I was thrilled... When I saw the effect on the ice... not so much... not because Patrick didn't succeed to land the last two jumps... but really, we have been saying it, Patrick has very well-crafted programs, so even just changing these jumps meant changing the trajectory he is skating into the jumps... and that changes the choreography and makes it very hard for him and the program itself.

The 4t-3t was good but not Patrick's best attempt this year... He was very patient in launching the 3t which was amazing to see : experience, maturity, mad cat skills!

Now, when Patrick talked about adding the 4S... i thought he would do it where the 3lz originally was.... of course, I was wrong as it makes sense to do it 2nd, when Patrick has the most energy still.

However, with the addition of the preceding steps, which are the same as in the LP I felt that Patrick was getting behind the music and also getting perhaps not in the right spot on the ice, he took off the 4S and unfortunately, had to open it into a 3S with a messy landing... usually Patrick can open, use his mad cat skills and have a good landing on the 4t===>3t... but he couldn't save that one... so that's where it's a bit risky... a 3lz there, nicely landed would have gained him more points... but of course, he was going for a gorgeous 4S and I am very confident that the next attempts will be more successful.

The 3A : sigh... again, weird spot to see it right at the end, after elaborate skating, the fall didn't surprise me when I saw he wasn't around, I blamed the layout and fatigue... A under rotated 3A here with a fall, is very costly.

HOWEVER : still kudos to Patrick for trying his best at upgrading his layout at EVERY single competition... I kid you not!!! From Finlandia, where he marked the 4s with a 3s intentionally, to skate canada where he added the 4s without success yet.... then, he goes to China and fixes his non-jumps elements to get full levels... then GPF he lands the 4S!!! YAY!!! still more work done for nationals with the spins... then worlds where he also changes the LP Layout with the new 3A combo.. and now 2 quad SP attempted.

Patrick is a fighter and he is constantly upgrading his level in TES. BTW, at worlds, he lost a level on a spin... here they were all level 4. BRAVO.

aftermath : the good news : the next time Patrick does a 2 quad SP, it will be in a program that was DESIGNED to have the right timing and space to incorporate the jumps properly... he won't be so rushed or so tired....

So I would call this a very good result considering that
1) it was his first time
2) the program wasn't designed for it

Well observed, well analysed and well said, 4everhan.

I believe Patrick will have a much better beginning next season incorporating the 4S into a SP designed for its inclusion. He already has a reserved spot for the 4S in Esqualo. ;) He was really experimenting with a last minute rearrangement of Black Bird. But I'm glad he threw that in as one of the mandatory attempts before celebration worthy success and got it out of the way. I wonder if he will begin next season with a Senior B as another chance to get used to the 2 quad SP before the GP.

Yes! I am so proud of him this season! He probably did not expect to have to ramp up so much difficulty in the last part of his skating career, but he has tried to meet every challenge with the best he had. It's been a steep learning curve but he's demonstrated why he is one of the best.

I am looking forward to seeing that!

My thoughts on Patrick's SP: Although his landing on the attempted 4S made me burst out with an "oh!" when I watched it out in public, afterwards I reflected and realized that he had just made what author Neil Gaiman called "glorious, amazing mistakes." These are the mistakes made when "you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world."

So go Patrick!! Keep making good art on ice!! :agree:

My blog post is done for now.

Hmm... I think I just might tweet Patrick that a bunch of his fans want him to make Esqualo a competition program!

gosh.. in less than a night of sleep, the LP...

let's cheer him on!!!! i really want to witness his 3a-1/2lo-3s combo ;)

GO PATRICK!

and that we will be at autumn classic to cheer on him for its reveal ;)

Lol, I just told him that. :)

I had forgotten to add the accolades to my blog post! In reading through the Japanese fans' tweets, these were their general comments:

- Many loved the smoothness and beauty of his skating
- Some complimented him on his edges, and said that Nobunari Oda had commented on them, too
- Some admired his courage for taking on new challenges
- A few said Patrick's skating was very "healing" and calmed them down
- Some liked his simple costume
- A few said that he came across very much like a man, compared to the skinny person who skated before him
- Several admired his body and muscles
- Quite a few liked the same thing about him that Calica does
- Some thought he was cute and innocent
- And some, like us, said he is their favorite skater! :agree:

thank you for the excellent explanations! great information and well explained! thanks! :)

also i just want to say:

i totally agree with people who say patrick's skating heals them, because i always feel so calm after watching him skate! he is so solid and steady on the ice and his charisma is just wonderful. i also really love the way he's improving himself even though he's already so good. i like the way he's trying new things and i really like his new programs this season too

i watched the livestream last night and i think he did quite well on his SP even though there were minor mistakes. his performance and artistic expression, as always, is top notch! he has so much flow with the music it's just so calming and relaxing to watch him skate.

he has the perfect blend of style + technique! he's such an artiste on the ice it's so wonderful to watch him. also his deep edges and turns and steps are amazing

i look forward to his FS today and i also love his EX too!

His healing powers are probably even more powerful for the people who are there watching him live!
