2017 GP Rostelecom Cup Ladies SP

Mirai has been woefully inconsistent for years WITHOUT the 3A. I think if nothing else has helped her by now, the 3A at least won't do anymore damage - it has a chance of changing her psychology, if anything, especially seeing how she's really nailing the jumps in practice. It's when it comes to a real performance that the jumps fail her. And that's all psychological.
I was very worried for Mirai during the starting pose. To me she was shaking and looked super nervous. After she landed the 3A I felt a bit relieved but that was clearly too early for me to relax...

even current juniors are doing A LOT of transitions :)

There should be a balance between quantity and quality. I don't see the point in doing many transitions if their execution and the basic skating have a lot of room for improvement.
(To clarify, I am talking in general terms and not about any particular skater).

It's a straw man's argument to say that it's not all that figure skating is about. I never claimed that. She rightfully wins lots of competitions but that doesn't mean she's musical, or that her programs are structured well, or that she moves with intention. My only point is that just because she's superior at some things she should not get credit for others.
No, that in itself doesn't mean that she's very musical. But she IS very musical. How can you not see it?

This thread has well over double the replies that the men's thread does.

At least in the figure skating community, women's sports is not short on interest.

The forum was broken during the men, mostly due to Hanyu, so that's not a good yardstick to measure by...not today at least!

Radionova almost skated clean except for the first combination jump, scoring 68.75. Medvedeva's 80.75 is close to her personal best and she looked really sharp and focused. I think both skaters have an advantage in Moscow but Kostner and Higuchi are vying for the podium spots as well.

Mirai wasn’t at her best today but I know that she can go up the standings in her FS. She’s more of a FS person.

You think that poor basics + poor transitions >>> poor basics + good transitions and should be rewarded with a higher score? If that's the case, could I ask why?

No actualy i dont find her musical. Very rough, rather. she moves her arms but without any purpose.I find her irritating, like Fernandez

To my eyes she's skated very similar programs to dissimilar music. That in itself makes me question her musicality. There aren't subtle accents that she highlights in the music and her musical timing isn't out of this world. There are lots of skaters that have superior musicality to hers. Again, she's great at many things but let's not stretch credulity.

Yup. It's a very welcome evolution. Still, it's a shame how the sport is right now. Most programs even in these top competitions I have to think "ugh, circling again, could something happen soon?" time and time again. With Medvedeva's programs I have something to watch almost all the time. And the bizarre thing is that people actually treat that as a negative thing. It's unbelievable.

To be fair, sometimes the "circling" is flat-out beautiful, and fits the emotional and musical moment perfectly, as well as showing incredible expression.

I did not say that. FWIW, it's not possible to have poor basics and good transitions (unless by good you actually mean many).

Anyone know what Yulia said while commentating for Zhenya on TV? I already know what most of the posters here are going to say but what did Yulenka say :coffee:

I'd love to know more about what Yulia said throughout the entirety.
Glad she is still involved in figure skating in a way.

Were you here for it live? The board was having a fit so even though I'm sure ladies would still be busier the men's thread is short because it was crashing and lagging terribly.

*I survived the Cup of Russia men's SP thread are in the mail!*
