I thought of this instantly. We can laugh about it now, but at the time it was so sad to watch, and the sadness was made infinitely worse by the barrage of complaints afterward that were aimed at Patrick when they should have been aimed at the technical specialist and judges. (In that vein, 2013 Worlds was even worse :slink:). Patrick made several unusual mistakes with Aranjuez during the season, like falling on footwork and the waxel. But Nationals was utterly sublime, so that is the one Aranjuez that I watch over and over.

I didn't post that as a downer, but as a trip down memory lane. I am at peace now even watching Patrick's mistakes, as strange as that may sound. Was the "Lion King belly flop" when he fell down wake surfing, or did I miss something? Why "Lion King?"

It was a shocker at it happened but was funny too. By then Patrick had already won the competition with all the executed elements with the sublime footwork sequence to follow and I had to stress this fact in debate with the outraged protesters. Patrick had the highest BV for those years and any fall was major fodder for the detractors. Then Hanyu caught up with his jumps and falls and many Chan critics became silenced on merits of winning with falls. These days, falls are expected from the ultra high BV quadsters.

Anyway, the 2W didn't bother me that much after the initial shock because I knew fluke falls happened to the best and Patrick was the best, 2W or not.

I'm glad Patrick fans are at peace and accepting these days, especially knowing from the Guity Pleasure thread that not only do some people enjoy falls from the mighty but also the angst and melt down of their fans. We're not giving them satisfaction. :)

Oh, the Loin King Belly Flop has nothing on Patrick. It was on Max Aaron's menu courtesy of the initial typo from our happylife IIRC. The new element was named by 4everchan IIRC when performed by Max at a competition. And Karne laughed good-naturedly at the name with us.
 
VB : see... this is why i don't like the cutting down on content.... in the articles... now, it stresses the fact that Patrick better be flawless because his content is so much lower than the other contenders that mistakes could take him way out of the race....

so... this is what happens when you "go for less" You indeed focus more and more on "results" rather than "process"....

I give you an example coming from my world.... If i make a technical decision about a passage in order to be less risky... there may be a chance that i will still miss it... and that can affect focus....

If Patrick goes cleanly : we will all say : YAY.. wonderful!!! He indeed did the right thing because he was able to enjoy his skating ... etc

but what if he misses the first jump? Will he go into a narrative ( like he has done before) about "omg... now I cannot miss anything else.. oups POP")

I don't want to appear critical of Patrick and his team for making such decision... we clearly don't have all the facts... but to me process includes accepting errors.... and aiming for peaking at the right time.... process could also mean building confidence first.... but it's a much more sinuous and uncontrollable route as nobody knows ahead of time what will happen on the ice....

From seeing Patrick at Onyx, his quad salchow looked great.... he talks in the article about that one run-through where he fell on everything and didn't feel like skating the steps anymore... well.. that shows focus at the wrong place....

so yes... your neuro-linguistic programmer for performer is a bit dubious of the choices made.... I would agree if Patrick has lost control on his jumps and needs to tweak things... fine... fair enough.... perhaps the new boots made it tougher on him... fine... fair enough... but if it's because he gets frustrated with falling, then does he really expect not to fall all season? because... most skaters will do so during a season, even the best.... and sometimes, even the Olympic gold medal winner will fall...

What matters to me at this point is to see Patrick committed in his performance. If really the salchow killed that... then fine... remove it... but i have some issues with this approach....

i can already hear the commentators say :"Patrick, with a toned-down program, you needed to be perfect and you were... but that still wasn't enough for gold... what's the next step.... " and then Patrick is automatically cornered in saying that he will add the salchow... or that he doesn't care about winning... either answers can provoke wrong mental programming.

or.. the commentators : "Patrick, with a toned-down program, you needed to be perfect but you weren't here and there.... what's the next step?" What would patrick answer here???? That he is then not ready? That he is not competitive? That he cannot add his salchow before getting perfect ?

REmember : he said at WTT that it's the clean short at worlds that finally happen..... that allowed him to think that he could add the salchow instead of the lutz...

Well... that's not exactly true as the two events are independent... the two jumps different... the set ups different... etc.... Patrick could have tried the 2 quad SP wihtout having a clean run through of the 1 quad version and succeed it..

I look at all these quadsters... they change things around all the time... and think about each program individually... layouts are never the same.. new quads come in, others are left out... they are trying actively to see what will score more....


anyways... i am done on this topic.... i am not looking forward to interviews after the skates.

"I tell people I’m old. And they say, “are you kidding me, you’re 26.” But in my sport, I’m competing against Nathan (Chen) who I’m almost a decade older than. It’s frustrating at the beginning because it comes so easy."


He's really looking forward to the rest of his life:

"I’m already 99 per cent sure what I’m going to do after, no matter the medal, no matter the result in the team event. My best performance I’ve yet to give outside of skating. I’m looking forward to adapting these tools I’ve learned in skating for this beautiful life I have ahead."

My best performance I’ve yet to give outside of skating. I’m looking forward to adapting these tools I’ve learned in skating for this beautiful life I have ahead.

Everything you wrote here makes a lot of sense. I am not looking forward to after-competition interviews, but also I fear I am going to be greatly annoyed by the commentary during and after Patrick's programs about how "he can't win/medal because he's chosen to have a lower BV" or "the program is beautiful but not difficult enough." Commentators generally like to focus on "the competition" and I prefer to focus on "the skating." I love it when commentators say nice things about Patrick and other skaters I enjoy, but commentary can get on my nerves very quickly these days. Sigh. All we can do is wait and see. Patrick could change his mind again before NHK.
 
Come on guys, why all the premptive angst? Are you worried you wouldn't be given a chance to be upset later? We don't know what will happen, at this competition and at future ones. Patrick could have worded his answer differently to put himself in a better light but he, bless his open heart, is not afraid of negative reactions and criticism. I support him following his feelings and skating in joy as well as, bless his heart again, his fans, so I'm not about to care about any possible questions and criticism either. I trust Patrick will handle everything thrown his way. He is a self-aware and wise grown man now.

but that's one of the issues my dear... skating to have joy is focusing on a result, a state of mind... Patrick may be feeling it and that will be wonderful.. but nobody can tell how he will be when he has to face the music... it's a big competition for him... the first real of the year... will he feel the joy??? will he be nervous??? who knows?

The best is to always focus on the process... not a mental state to reach, not a goal in terms of points or elements achieved.... just going out there, and performing, doing your best... if you best means falling on your butt a couple times that day, well... tomorrow is another day... and things can be addressed in practice...

one of the lessons i have learned from performing and you will excuse me but musicians perform WAY more often than skaters... we don't show up 5-6 times a year in competition.... we perform week in and out... is that it's better not to get ahead of yourself.

the article is all about that : patrick removed quads because it won't make him happy not to skate clean...

well... do you see how erroneous this is? who knows what he will land or not on competition day? who knows if he will be happy or not? i mean, anything can happen... don't you remember the splat on his face on a camel spin? I am not wishing Patrick any harm... not at all. But anything can happen... so it's better to treat performance in another mindset.

Anyway, that's why I said i was done with the topic because from now on, I will relish every instant of skate Canada... and cheer on for my faves ;)
