The first time I saw this twizzle by Patrick in his DiTW, I thought it could be a new jump style for him. He has not followed others in adopting hand(s)-over-head styles for additional points but why not create his own, with one hand behind his back? It would be tight for rotation speed but different and unique.

What do you think? Would Patrick adopt it?

This is my first post. I’ve only been following the skating since January 2017, and it was only chance that led me to a Youtube of Patrick Chan. I was transfixed. So much so, that I travelled from England to Regina in October to see him at Skate Canada (my first ice skating event). I nabbed a front row seat, so he was only a few feet away at times - wow. Even in the warm-up, simply gliding forward, Patrick’s grace and elegance on the ice was plain to see. Some children next to me cheered his name him as he went past, and his face lit up. I was so delighted to see him perform in the competition. Even though his performances there were not up to his usual amazing standards, I was thrilled to have seen him. I’ve really missed his skating since then. I love this forum – there are so many wonderful writers who post on here, and I’ve also missed the wit and knowledge of 4EverChan (please come back!). I’ve bought tickets for the World Championships, and dearly hope to see Patrick Chan again there. His skating and wonderful artistry has brought so much joy and inspiration

Welcome to the Patrick's Fest, Ruthypegs! What a heartfelt and touching first post that shows how amazing Patrick's skating is and what an appreciation for artistry you have to recognize his greatness even as a novice in this sport, so much so that you made the trip from England to Canada to see him skate. Unfortunately it was the worst showing of his skating career and fortunately your eye for finesse still saw his unique and superb quality in skating. Fortunately too that these days many great events are recorded on internet videos and there are many fabulous performances by the great Patrick Chan for us fans to enjoy.

It may be somewhat of a shame that you discovered Patrick near the end of his competitive career but then I remember how I became a fan of some music and movie stars really late, sometimes after their careers were over or even after deaths. It was because I had either dismissed that kind of music or I was deep in my survival mode to pay attention to unrelated subjects. E.g. Michael Jackson. It was within a couple of years of his passing that I happened to see a video of his interview that I noticed what a loving and sweet person he was when he got up and hugged some "unimportant" person to comfort him so naturally and so full of empathy. Then I kept seeing that loving nature in him and how he was loved by those who actually knew him that I never believe the ugly accusations against him. Another example is, because of the internet and online videos, I have for the last couple of years caught up with the Chinese movies and stars from a few decades back and I've become a truly appreciative fan of some of the greatest actors. So I congratulate you for discovering Patrick at this time or any time so you will have much enjoyment and appreciation as well as times of being awed to come.

Welcome again, Ruthypegs. I am happy for Patrick to have another truly appreciative and devoted fan and to have you join us to celebrate this one of the all time greats in figure skating.

Ruthypegs, what a lovely first post! Welcome! It's always nice to see a new username in this thread, especially since things are a bit slower with Patrick not competing since SC. You have discovered Patrick's true magic from the start of being his fan, which is that even when the jumps are off, his skating is still mesmerizing to watch (which includes everything he does when he's not in the air). Jumps occupy mere seconds, and only 8 of those are allowed in the LP, but "the rest" is why I truly love figure skating. And yes, the very best skaters can mesmerize us with their practices and warmup, skating around with no music and no program at all. :yes:

I noticed watching the GPF that some of the jump mistakes looked very awkward. Often skaters were coming out of the rotation way too early and landed on both feet. Mens, in particular, was a mistake-filled event, and it reminded me how beautiful Patrick's jumps are. He maintains a tight and straight air position, completes rotations cleanly, and lands with good flow, even on his mistakes. Not to mention he doesn't do Tanos or Rippons (the men in general seem to do many less Tanos/Rippons than the ladies; I wonder why???). I've never seen Patrick land on two feet facing the wrong direction for as long as he's been competing. He has jumps that are aesthetically pleasing even when he makes a mistake. His mistakes are falls (normal-looking falls), doubles, or stepouts. Are his "types of mistakes" a matter of technique, personal preference (i.e. if the jump takeoff doesn't go well, he'll double instead of land awkwardly), or chance? I was thinking about how nice Patrick's mistakes have looked in his career compared to some of what I saw at GPF. I'd rather watch Patrick do a program of doubles than see so many mistakes that look way more awkward. Patrick has not been labeled as an amazing jumper, but he has beautiful jumps.
