2018 US Championships Sr. Ladies SP

I have no reason to blow smoke. I call it as I see it, and have been doing this a long time, so sorry to those who think differently.

Oh I believe you; perhaps blowing smoke is the wrong term. Before I only SAW the smoke, but I saw the flames and the match tonight.

If Ashley had skated clean, all her components would have gone up .25-.50 (especially PE and IN), and she'd be well into the 34s. Maybe, this just speaks to the US judges penalizing PCS for technical mistakes, which an international panel is very very loathe to do (see Carolina, also Medvedeva at NHK)

I too think USFSA is ticked at Ashley Wagner over Skate America. I don't really think there could be any other explanation, it seriously looks like she has fallen out of favor. I think SA was a big mistake, she should have WD beforehand or finished the program and taken a placement lower than she wanted OR at least not immediately gone and told the media that SA is not important and doesn't matter and that she was going to go and win nationals.

To be honest, I wasn't thrilled with Mirai either. I feel like we heard all summer how well she was hitting the triple axel, and then when it came time for the grand prix, her results were not great. Then tonight, the same thing. What is going to change going forward?

It's the triple Axel, not a double Toe. How many ladies, exactly, in the Senior competition are landing the 3A right now? How many Junior girls? I'll give you a hint - one hand is all you need to count both of those together.
How old is Mirai Nagasu again?

She's rocking it. She has the guts to go for that, and now she's added the Lz combo. If there's one lady that's been advancing, against all the odds, it's Mirai. Knock on wood and she can hold steady on the 5th and skate cleanly because by George, she's 'earned' it by pushing forward and not giving up.

The problem is that Ashley's spins are greatly improved. Again these judges are too afraid to judge what they see and judge by reputation. .Karen's spins are clearly better but I don't think we can call Ashley a weak spinner anymore.

She does enough to get level 4s, yes, but does not have enough extra features to earn GOE. She has minimum number of rotations, no original/creative positions, and isn't particularly fast or clean.

Here's an explanation: a messy program results in lower PCS. Shocking idea, I know!

I'm guessing it might be Karen too, given the huge PCS boost she got and the much lower than expected PCS Ashley got. Karen is prone to URs and Ashley does better in the FS, but I'm wondering if the writing is on the wall for Ashley.

It would be really interesting if Angela (who was a pleasant surprise!) won bronze, and Ashley or Karen were 4th, in which case you'd get another Mirai/Ashley 2014 scenario.

I am happy for Mirai though - I actually thought she'd be ahead of Tennell with the 3A advantage technically, but Tennell was obviously uber-boosted on her PCS.

Tennell should go to the Olympics given her technical ability, but I hope the USFSA isn't scratching their heads as to why her PCS is sub-30, unless they politic like they've never politicked before to bump up her PCS internationally.
If Angela won the bronze, the USFSA would send Angela to the Olympics. Neither Karen nor Ashley has shown they deserved it this season.

Of course now TSL is trashing Wagner on twitter. No wonder she probably hates them.

I stopped watching and following TSL a couple of years ago. Dave is catty and unkind. I don't I think he deserves any attention that he gets. I refuse to give him the benefit of one follower on any social media or one view on his YouTube account.

I’m not sure if Ashley has lost love, because I’m not sure if she ever really had it in the first place. She’s always been the less loved one. That second choice that they put up with. They have Bradie now, so once again they have another option. But she always fights to be seen anyone. I hope that’s enough on Friday.

IF THIS ISN'T THE GOD HONEST TRUTH. I will be heartbroken if she doesn't make it to the Olympics. She has accomplished more for US skating over the past eight years then all the rest of the top us ladies put together. US fed has tried to replace her with Gracie, Karen, and now Bradie. God I hope she can pull it out Friday and is judged fairly. and I hope when all is said and done she is remembered much more kindly then she is treated now. She might not be a Carolina or a Yuna or a Evgenia but she has held it together for US ladies skating the past eight years and if they really wanna low ball her now, in the last Olympic chance she will have....

She's consistent. That's it. Everything else is extremely generic and middling. It's a bit much to ask people to be excited about that.
I agree. The fact that Bradie is ahead of Mirai because of PCS looks like a huge statement to me: like, listen, we need this girl in the team because she lands the jumps. Shut up and take her.
The only one who really sold her program was surprisingly Mariah, with great choreography and excellent speed ans interpretation. BUT she made a mistake, so she obviously wasn’t rewarded for that :scowl:

Oh come on CSG! I have been telling you all to watch out for Angela for a good year or so now, so how is this a surprise? ;)

But the performance here was actually an improvement and her tech in the SP has not been any better all season, and it's nationals so you'd at least expect her to maintain the typical PCS or more likely improve on it. But PCS are where the judges can politick the most. So I'm just kinda trying to read the writing on the wall.
