2018 Olympic Figure Skating Mens FS

I think Nathan could benefit a lot from the way things turned out in the end. The key is to turn this into a learning experience and improve the artistry (he made progress, but he can push iti further), work on comitting to a jump layout (it can be flexible, but not that flexibile as I think that hurt him too, jumping something else at every competition) and become a great skater. Winning gold when he is still in a "semi-raw" state could have come with lots of criticism.
Take the awful SP, Nathan, and the "what if" and turn yourself in the great skater your potential lets us think you could be. And tell that vulture called US media to back off and let athlets have privacy. The US public is not that dumb to shove in his face teary stories every 5 seconds, I have faith in them as I have faith in Nathan.
I love this kid, I hope he comes out of this and we see him skate like fire in 2022.

Delighted for Javi. For a moment I feared that he may end up as Kurt Browning.

He should have won silver though, Uno bronze. Uno didn't even care for silver.

... can You please share on what grounds Shoma 'didn't even care for silver'? Funny that as I ready reports on Shoma's reaction, interview, I just knew it will make a convenient for some plot about him being spoiled, arrogant or uncaring. Please don't make your personal impressions of skaters' demeanor an argument to award medals/points differently.

He is a quadster, nobody is disagreeing. What you don’t seem to accept that it also takes guts, mental toughness and grit to eek out two solid programmes in order to podium. You can’t just depend on a sudden moment of 6 quads and watering down of components while hoping for judges to hold you up. Nathan will get there eventually, he has the goods, he just needs time to mature and become mentally a stronger competitor.

Actually, Nathan's technical ability is such, that, no, he doesn't need two solid programs. If he'd had a non-disaster short, he would have medaled. He won the Grand Prix final with imperfect programs (and no Hanyu or Javier around).

So, he really needs one clean performance and one non-disaster. I think he would have had that if he hadn't had the misfortune to come on right after Hanyu's brilliant short. Even if it happens again, I don't think he'll be quite so thrown by it.

Dude, your main squeeze himself said that bombing the short took all the pressure off. End of discussion.

Well, yeah, but that's a good thing. The pressure on him was nuts and it probably would have crushed most people.

Out of curiosity what do people feel Nathan should have scored? Should he have made the Top 10?

From his reaction when the scores came in, and him being the only one not smiling on the podium photo.

I think it's more he was really surprised! To win a medal at your first Olympics would shock anyone!

Also does Shoma smile a lot? He seems the serious sort so I wouldn't assume him not smiling means he's upset with the result.

I've seen quite a few podiums where people haven't been beaming, but I'm sure they're very happy!

For me it was rather anti-climatic event to be honest :( It didn't really feel 'Olympics' and no one fully delivered which was disappointing. But I'm SO happy for Yuzuru for his Gold medal (well-deserved, not perfect skate but overall he was for sure the best and all of that after horrible injury) and Nathan for that comeback (after awful SP and the pressure he was under in). Congrats to Shoma and Javier for medals and Vincent and Boyang for good fights too.

Chen had a wonderfully musical step sequence with interesting choreography and skated ON THE BEAT. No, it's not the whole program but it's a significant advance over last year's program. BOTH he and Jin made big strides in their components this year, particularly when you compare their components to their first year as Seniors.

Vincent's artistry is still at the junior level. But then it's also HIS first year as a Senior.

Really I know people want to boost their personal faves, but credit where credit is due please!

As a skater Nathan may have improved overall, but his improvements weren't apparent on the ice today so I preferred Boyang. Today's performance felt like a jump drill to me and I was not impressed. You may think otherwise and that's fine.

In 6 weeks, we'll know if Nathan can wipe out the rest of the field with a 2Q SP and 6Q + 3A FS.

I don't think he can "wipe the field" but he will definitely be competitive. If he had scored his season's best short program score and his season's best free skate score in the Olympics that would have placed him above Yuzuru by 2 points around 319. But, Shoma's season's best score is 319 too so if they are both clean or close to clean that is a real fight. Additionally, you can't count out Javier because his sp best score is 109 +216 in the long for a total of 325. Basically, it is anyone's game. It is just going to be about who goes the cleanest because this is men's figure skating, when is everyone clean?

The men were doing 848732465324 quads in 2 days, waking up at 4:00 AM thanked to NBC schedule. So yes whatever they did today = phenomenal. IF NBC care for them and want them to deliver, they would have never changed the schedule.

Let put it this way:

If Hanyu were not so badly injured and be healthy and did well both programs he might have scored 335 or 340.

We have a series of what if, what if, what if...

Hanyu: Without Javi, I would not have come to Canada. Because of him, I was really able to incorporate the 4S and 4T in my program. Without him, training would have been so hard, I would not have been able to bear it. #PyeongChang2018

*SOB* Don't retire Javi!!

Thank you Javi for cuddling with Hanyu during those lonely nights in Canada. The skating world is forever grateful.

I have to admit that I was never a fan of Chan in the past. Even thinking about a couple of his Worlds titles will get me all riled up when I think of Daisuke and co, but I digress ...

Though I do have to say that this Olympic cycle has changed my view on Chan and his PCS. He truly earned every point of them and then some! It just doesn't settle with me that there is about 0.5-0.6 difference between Chen/Boyang's SS (~8.7/8.8) and Patrick's SS (9.32). The same also applies to the composition/transitions.

If the future of men's figure skating will be filled various quads and devoid of genius choreography and masterful skating skills ... I cant help but feel very sad as a fan.

As for Chan, I would like to say thank you for perfecting aspects of his skating other than the jumps. You don't appreciate things until they are gone. Or almost gone in this case.

The times when people are judging others as uncaring by lack of smile. But whatever.

About his reaction on scores/placement - as he watched ALL those performances before his own, he knew the chance for Gold was real. Then his not perfect skate happened. And he probably realized that it could be not enough maybe to medal at all. The mix of emotions is a tough thing to express, especially for relatively shy skater Shoma is. He has no personality Yuzuru or Javier has, so his reactions, expression are just different. It could be a mix of a shock, self-disappointment, surprise over medal colour... I am sorry, but the single shot of him not smiling megavatt style, especially comparing to other two skaters is not enough to portray him as not caring for his silver.

Mechanical as the robot heartless skating of Nathan Chen left a metallic taste. Much nicer Adam' highly artistic and full of harmony&aesthetics merry skating. No doubt he had to go to the top three winners!

Yes, we are talking about the World's competition though. Not about this Olympics. Hanyu is not going to worlds. If he went, he was healthy and he performed well (also big ifs) he would definitely win. The quality of his elements and his PCS advantage assures this.

The Worlds is in the future so it is all about "what ifs" Maybe, you should read the comment I responded to ??
