Mirai looks much more relaxed tonight so that's good. She looked really tense a couple days ago that I knew she was not going to land her 3 axel as soon as I saw her face.

I did sort of fall out of following skating because the forums get so catty at times. It was years ago now, but a friend (a casual fan) and I went to freakin' Stars on Ice and this girl in front of us was snottily critiquing each performance and would turn around and give us the stink eye every time we cheered encouragingly if one of the skaters stumbled. It was one of the televised locations so the skaters came out later for reshoots. She said "I don't know why people have to cheer so loud for bad skating". My friend is normally very confident and she later told me that girl made her uncomfortable and made her not want to go to skating events anymore. It's like you get so used to being catty you can't just sit back and ENJOY a performance.

Some nitpicking is fun but some fans can get scary. I think it was the Mao vs Yuna bots that first scared me away. LOL

She's one of the few. If I ever went to a show, I'd probably cheer even for the group 2 we saw.

No, but I have a Brit friend who keeps up with practically the entire world. If I message him he'll probably tell me everything I ever need to know about it.

Long story short..he cheated on his wife with a member of his staff and now she's pregnant.

And he did all this while standing against marriage equality because "It's a holy bond between a man and a woman"

Yeah, no...

Plus there's suggestions he used public money for his mistress (promoting her, putting her up in hotels etc)

II don't like reading the extremes some people go to bash either, but it's still unlikely that the athletes would ever come to GS ever. The NBC broadcast is there for everyone to watch, and it also shades the viewpoint of the casual viewer. Their biased, disrespectful commentary normalizes the viewers' own not-so-savoury behaviour towards athletes.

I always think about how those videos live forever on the internet. Especially now in the Youtube era. Like nobody is going to remember what some random hater posted in these chats 5-10 years from now, but the skater will never escape the commentary on the videos. I feel bad for them. It's bad enough to bomb on the biggest stage but then you have those words haunting you (sure you could just never watch the videos, but wouldn't you want to, at least once?).

That said, I don't know why anyone subjects themselves to NBC when we have so many other options now. I haven't watched them once during these Olys.

This is true. We aren't on a payroll. I am just the only person I know that is a skating fanatic so it is kind of isolating. I have no one to talk to about skating. It's so nice to just let loose and have fun talking to people I don't know about something we all love!

This is me. I used to watch with some of my friends and we even went to the Canadian Nationals in 2002 (though our friends mocked us for going as we're just fans and didn't know anyone there). My family used to watch with me back when Elvis Stojko was still "King of the Quad". After the 2002 Olympics no one would watch with me anymore. My husband will poke his head in once awhile and ask me something about the skater but he won't stay.

I believe it's time for the invention of a new type of skate, one that doesn't involve boots, for Karen. Skate sandals, skate slippers, anything but a boot. If I were her, I'd be wary of even buying winter boots. Poor girl.
