2018 Olympic Figure Skating Ladies FS

I'm pretty sure every single comment disagrees with him. I take what he says with a grain of salt though, he's kinda losing it.

Ha ha poor Dick.

I was amused to see he still hates the arm movements...every old YouTube video I watch of Plushy where he's commentating he'll say something about it. Which makes me want to see a video of him skating, what did he do with his arms?!

I wonder when we're going to get a non-teen Olympic Gold medal winner? The Women's event seems like such a teen-only thing, with "bursts" of brilliance from the oldies every once in a while.

History teaches us. Don't ever say never...there is always someone lurking in the shadows waiting to snatch your crown. :con3:

Who can challenge Zag now? She's still young, has some really crazy PCS, crazy 2nd half tech with a super difficult combo. Even with Olympics inflation, she can do 230 in her sleep with any program keeping the same layout. She looks like a real threat to repeat in 2022, unless her body matures some more or barring injury.

I don't think the 2022 champion will win without 3A and quads.

The next quad could launch ladies’ skating into the era of the 3A (Rika Kihira, Mirai Nagasu, Wakaba Higuchi(?) and more skaters from Japan). Alina’s technical advantage won’t seem as impressive then and her PCS won’t be that high anymore if the tech doesn’t stand out imo.

The podium place getters in 2006 were all in their 20s :)

I'm sorry, but I think the wrong person won. Zagitova has beautiful jumps and spins. Sometimes she even times the jumps to the beat of the music. But I find her skating pretty boring and sloppy in the first half of that program- pageant poses, unfinished arms and positions, little relation to or engagement with the music. And the second half is a jump drill. If you turned the music off for that program, my impression of Zagitova's program would be much different. Zagitova skated well tonight. She worked the system. But giving her 9.29 for composition; 9.46 for interpretation; and 9.61 for performance execution seems criminal.

Medvedeva is musical and much more interesting. She has a sense of what's playing and what she's trying to convey to the audience. The choreography is trying to communicate things about the story- it's not just there to waste time until the jump drill comes/ fill the space so that she can backload. Evgenia's jumps are not as good as Zagitova's. But her spins are, IMO, about equal to Zagitova's, and her jumps were clean tonight (minus the 3Z "should have been e") tonight. I think Medvedeva deserved gold.

Osmond was also wonderful. She really pulled it out when it counted. The best free skate of her life couldn't have come at a better time. This was a real performance. It was uncluttered and lyrical and interesting. She had all the technical goods (although she doesn't backload and she doesn't get Medvedeva-level GOEs). Deserving bronze medalist. It's a shame that things are going in the direction they're going, because Osmond really should be up there competing with the Russians when she skates like this.

Satoko was also great. She had such detail in her choreography and interpretation. I prefer her "Planets" program to this one, but she performed as best as she could. The jumps are always questionable/ not my cup of tea, but she did them to the best of her ability tonight.

I just feel sad about the order of the podium. The new system seems to have everything out of whack, and now the gold medal seems to go to the person who is most adept and maximizing her points. And the points don't, IMO, reflect the quality of the programs in much other than jumps and spins. It's too bad.

Very sad and strange competition (in the final two flights that I watched). Thrilling to watch the two Russian ladies who epitomize the competitive spirit of the Olympics, but a little sad that ladies skating has been reduced to a competition of who can put most jumps in the second half of the program.

--I was sad to see Medvedeva lose, as I think her spirit and integrity are hard not root for, and I tend to root for the "veterans," but giving her the win would have meant giving her perfect 10's across the board in some of her component marks, and she just is nowhere near that
--Kaetlyn Osmond had the performance of the night for me. If she had been more consistent all season, she could have been in conversation for silver at least
--The US Ladies were a disaster. It reinforced my belief that they should have sent Ashley Wagner. If you have no medal contenders and no real stars, why not send someone who can have an Adam Rippon like trajectory while finishing out of the top 5? Hope Ashley is drinking wine tonight and saying "I told you so" to anyone who will listen.

But it's possible that she herself will try and learn to perform a quad. Although of course, trying and doing are different things, especially for the quads. I find it difficult to believe she could still learn a quad at her age but of course, I'll be happy if I end up being proven wrong.

I do think that Medvedeva was perhaps feeling overly safe and didn't push her limits technically enough. Adding extra 3Ts to everything really isn't that useful.

I mean, Alexandra Trusova just skated a program where she had a 4S, fall on ur 4T, and 7 triples on the second half. So there are some girls.

With the state of the seniors right now though, Zagitova should go undefeated this and the upcoming season assuming she's clean. Because let's be real, while her PCS is sky high she still has lots of room to improve - And she's going to improve.
I don’t want to be mean, but we gotta wait to see how Alina gets through puberty and the media interest ....

I am pretty sure Mirai will retire after this season. She might not even go to the worlds.

you're in for a surprise then.

The last group was amazing and I'm happy for everyone. I think they all gave skates they could be proud of. My heart broke for Satton and Med and Alina's reaction in the purple room to winning (with the looking down at the plush and she just seemed so alone and young idk). I hope Alina continues on and becomes stronger; she's only 15 there's no reason she can't improve to match the juniors who are coming up, and improve her artistry at the same time. I hope to god RusFed doesn't just throw her away although I know they will.

As much as I'm looking forward to the juniors with their awesome tech coming up... when I look back on the last quad- I honestly lost so much interest in Ladies skating since Akiko (especially for me, but that's just me), Mao and Yuna retired. I didn't watch anything live i don't think. I was super impressed with the stuff that the top ladies put out there (such as Tuk 3As) and I kept up with the top ladies from all countries and I liked them and wanted them to do well but never really fell in love with anyone. The problem is they rise and fall so young so fast and no one gets the time to develop into a complete skater.

Wait what am I missing here? Why does Eteri hate Alina (her own skater) and who is Zhenya?!?!

I don't believe she "hates" Alina or anything close to it. That's just the ludicrous EvilEteri fanfic narrative people like to push around here. Just because she is closest to Zhenya does not mean she hates the rest of her skaters. Good grief, she doesn't have to train Alina or anyone else if she's only interested in Zhenya's success.
