2018 Worlds Ladies FS

I had to miss this, but I managed to watch a few videos this morning before the ISU blocked them.

Wow what a shocking finish! Poor Alina, she looked so upset, I hope she'll be OK. I was seriously shocked at how low her TES was! I guess that's the danger of backloading, no time to regroup if things go wrong. I certainly didn't expect to see her off the podium!

Caro also ended up off the podium, ah well, at least she could keep smiling :) And her skating is still really lovely to watch...Plushy should have her in one of his shows!

Kaetlyn's program was awesome! She totally nailed the Black Swan! A well-deserved gold.

I didn't manage to catch either Wakaba or Satoko which is a shame because I'd like to see how they went! A big congrats for the second and third place finishes! The three spots are back now! :2thumbs:

And as someone who's terrible at spotting under-rotating I was like "What the-?" when I saw Kailani score! The TES dropped by like five points or more! What a shame :( But, she finished way better than last year which is the aim!

I also watched Laurine before having to dash off to work, it was a bit of a nail biter during the first half, but after the costume change she did brilliantly. I did however notice the ISU box said she was skating to 'A Greece Medley' and  whoops!

Wakababy is the world silver medalist? Best news of the year for me :yahoo::yes2:. And Japan gained back 3 spots in a spectacular way. Thanks skating god .
While I think that Alina should have taken a vacation, but she probably doesn't have the luxury to decline to go. I feel very sad to her. and now I can understand and support the way they reward backloading.

Tarasova commented today about AZ's weight - saying that since the olympics she gained 3cm (not sure what that means) and that when you gain weight you can't do the junps.

i truly hope AZ doesn't turn into another Julia. Or Adelina for that matter - I don't like these one hit wonders who disappear from the scene after one season.

But it's not appropriate for one of the top coaches in your country to be griping about the weight of the 16 year old olymic champion. I hope she has people behind her that will shield her from such things.

Geeze TAT settle down.

And it's always ironic to hear her commenting on skater's weight, she's only like the size of a house herself! (Although I suppose when she was skating she was thin) But seriously TAT, comments like that are not helpful.

So happy for Kaetlyn!!! Well deserved Gold!

Alina just showed that it is not easy to back load all the jumps, even for her! So sad that she had such a bad showing. Good luck for the future!

No--she showed that cramming all the jumps at the end allows no time to recover from a mistake. No skater skates without mistakes all the time. It's risk/reward. Skate clean and you are OGM. Make mistakes and you are in 5th place.

Kaetlyn - Gold Medalist :hap10: :yahoo: so very deserved. Sublime program, incredible speed, huge jumps with amazing flow in and out, body positions, artistry. I thought she was actually under marked. I couldn't believe how positive GEOs were being dished out like candy for Alina's scratchy jumps and Satoko's tiny "jumps" with no flow. Great job Wakaba; however, those who say she should've been placed above Osmond are either dreaming or delusional. She's not on the same level as Kaetlyn. I SO wanted Caro to win on home ice, but like Alina, the pressure got to her and she imploded. Most exciting women's competition in years  such drama, heartbreak, heart stopping surprises.

Huh. Two of the highest-ranking international panels of judges all gave her higher scores than Yuna Kim at the 2010 Olympics. So for all those saying Kaetlyn is "the weakest" or to those taking the time to give us your living room assessments, thank but...18 judges disagree with you and guess what? SHE WON!! k thx byeeee

It's not a joke at all, but clearly you did give her more GOE than I feel is deserved if you can't get her score below 139. Also, I would score her lower than 135 actually when looking at the 2Axel+3Toe rotation closely, because it was underrotated and not called:

3Flip+3Toe, +1 / Good enough Flip jump, then smaller and barely rotated on the toeloop.
2Axel+3Toe<, -2 / Okay axel and then short on the toeloop with a stepout (and it visibly looked short in real time too, but I just assumed she barely made the 1/4 mark and the call was correct when I judged in real-time). This combo not receiving -2 across the board from the judges, in fact only receiving -1 total, just shows what a joke the scores are with the judges holding up "chosen" skaters.
3Lutz !, 0 / Good height but a slightly unsteady landing and questionable takeoff edge. Overall it's a wash.
CCoSp4 +1.5 / The opening sit spin position is underwhelming, but she does a very nice back camel with change of edge.
LSp4, +2 / Very good throughout, not the absolute best positions to deserve a +3 however.
3Loop, +2 / Very nice and perfectly clean with turning 3's entrance.
3Flip, +1 / It's fine, not at all the biggest she can do and no other great features.
3Sal+2Toe+2Loop, +1 / A fine execution, could be bigger and have more flow, the toeloop could be rotated better.
2A, +.5 / Not the biggest and a bit of tightness on the landing, because of lacking some rotation.
StSq4, +1 / She is constantly VERY overrated in her footwork, there is never a great degree of speed in the turns or fluidity between them. The usage of her arms is okay here and she has a couple nice leg lines, but this seriously is not that special.
ChSq, +1 / A "greatest hits" collection of moves, except none of them are special, although the musical timing is okay (aside from the spiral which is kind of wasted). A split jump without great extension or toepoint, a brief spiral without great extension, an ina bauer and spread eagle that superficially hit the beat of the music but fail to create a grand enough moment because the expression and duration are not far enough beyond being perfunctory (the spread eagle is the best moment of the sequence and hints at being great but doesn't quite get there).
CCoSp4, +1.5 / This is the most generous I could possibly be, a full +2 is certainly not deserved. The positions can all be better and the speed is far from the best, but it's relatively fluid throughout.

Add that all up and it would give a technical score of 67.07. Then for the PCS an average of low 8's is certainly the highest I would possibly go for a relatively lackluster program this (let's say 8.75 for skating skills, 8.5 transitions, 8.25 performance, 8.0 choreography and interpretation), which would be a total of 66.4 on the second mark. This would give her a total score of 133.47.

gave her higher scores than Yuna Kim at the 2010 Olympics.

JSYK, the scoring systems are different. The GOEs Yuna received there would be scaled down now, and the spiral sequence was replaced by the choreographic sequence. And base values have changed. So Yuna would have scored even lower then, correcting for these changes. Wow, Osmond demolished her!

There I helped you make a better bad-argument. At least get facts right before making bad-arguments!

ITA - love your term "living room assessments" - so appropriate

How do they ( I have nonidea who they are ) decide who will bw invited to Gp? Good results atvworlds at least and Leona would propably be invited?

 Carolina omitted an entire triple -- she didn't even attempt the 3S in her intended 2A/half-loop/3S sequence -- it turned into a 1A and she didn't attempt the rest of the sequence. Her double lutz was supposed to be a triple lutz.

Even if you think Satoko should've gotten more URs, underrotated triples still count for more than triples that are not even attempted.

But Carolina landed MORE clean triples (4) than Satoko did (3), in my opinion (or 7 vs 5 including the short). And the clean triples she did land were of higher quality as well.

Just woke up. Congrats to the winners! Sad day for Alina tho :( Poor girl. I hope she comes back strong in her next competition.

Tbh. I read about that too and how they're gonna change some of her technical elements because of her weight gain. But i hope that she rests well for now, since she's tired emotionally and physically after the Olympics.

LOL, as if we need to think about discounting inflation in order to determine what is "plausible"! All that matters are the actual facts of what happened and what something deserves to be scored on an all-time scale, which is what CoP is supposed to be measuring. Did you miss the part though where I said my score for Higuchi would be 139, which is 6 points lower than what she got? Yes, her score was relatively higher than it should really be too, but her degree of overscoring was far lower than Osmond's, who I have 15 points lower on GOE/PCS and then another 1.3 points lower because of an underrrotation call that was not given!

Well I don't agree with it either but with the current state of inflation it does not make any sense for Kaetlyn to get a 133. On an all time scale based on say 2010 scores then sure I agree. The base values change, etc...the COP unfortunately is not perfect over time, as you may have noticed, so although ideally we can compare scores over the years it may be unfair to earlier skaters. In any case Satoko, on that scale, would be at a 110 probably, especially with the URs actually counting as a double (by the way, so current skaters get more points for URs, and you still are going to compare the scores directly?). And Wakaba would probably be around the same as Kaetlyn for the long, slightly lower overall due to a major fall in the short.

I hope Satoko and Wakaba get the scores they deserve next season. World's Silver and Bronze boost yes? :)))

I personally think that both are underscored in PCS. Wakaba is also underscored in GOEs. It's okay for Satoko to get dinged in TES but please, please score her components way more. I've seen her in Pyeongchang and I have to tell you she skates with such finesse and flow. Her small physique is not a problem at all. She gains a lot of speed with little work. Her blade mastery is really quite something and I was sitting from a B category seat.

Congrats Kaetlyn! Great performance and well-deserved gold medal. Now please get a better free program next season. And I love Wakaba and Satoko's skating, so great podium

Wacky event overall. Hope Zagitova comes back strong.

But Carolina landed MORE clean triples (4) than Satoko did (3), in my opinion (or 7 vs 5 including the short). And the clean triples she did land were of higher quality as well.

In FS

Satoko: 6 triples (one <), 3 doubles (one <, one popped triple, fall), 2 2A -- 2 triples, 2 doubles (one <), both 2A are in second half
Carolina: 5 triples (fall), 2 doubles (one popped triple), 1 1A (pop) -- 2 triples (fall), 1A (pop) are in second half -- lost 2 of her combos hence the missing 3 jumps

BV difference (includes urs): 57.08 vs 45.98

Caro had more clean, better-quality triples, but that and her single 1A are not enough to offset Satoko's extra triple, double, and two 2As. The BV difference is way too big to be closed by just better execution and PCS (especially since it was a non-clean skate so some elements definitely will have negative GOEs). Also, Caro's fall cost a lot more points from the BV than Satoko's fall (3S vs 2S), which is even worse with a significantly lower BV in the first place.

not going to bother looking at jump stats for SP since both were mostly clean, and Caro had a 6pt lead

for the record, I think they're both amazing skaters and bring different things to the table. But I'm all for fair scoring, and Caro should not have been higher than Satoko in the FS given the existing tech calls.

Thrilled beyond words for Kaetlyn. She always had all the talent to be world champion and it's finally happened. So deserving!

Sad for Carolina that she couldn't pull out a medal in her home country. Sad for Zagitova. Hated seeing it happen to Daleman at the Olympics and hated seeing it happen to Zagitova here.

But Osmond — first Canadian ladies World Champion in 45 years! What an amazing feat!
