2018 Worlds Ladies FS

Has there ever been a World Champion that was as basic as Kaetlyn?

She really doesn't bring anything new or interesting to the table.

Wow, she must really have arrived to bring out such virulent and yet at the same time banal hatred after deservedly winning a World Championship.

I mean, obviously some world champions are better or more memorable than others, but I'm kinda generically of the opinion that any World or Olympic champion is an incredible athlete and one of the greats of the sport :)

If someone, Osmond deserves the gold!!
Zagitova was so poor, hope she will recover from this hard long season.

I think Maria Sotskova is way too underscored?! She got 8th although having two almost clean programs! Her jumps deserve higher GOE because look at how high they are and she is very tall girl. I think her second mark still has that reputation of a junior skater even though she has a lot more mature interpretation now. I understand the fact that her transitions & composition is quite traditional.. but that’s how I see it :(

Unless Carolina is awarded 100 PCS, I guess.

There was reason why i wrote "if" in my post.
As much i did hope gold for Alina season has been long.
And in SP i did already see that this long season has affect on Alina.
She was not the same Alina that earlier. For example in Korea.

But im really happy for Kaetlyn yesterday she did earned the gold:agree:

In FS

Satoko: 6 triples (one <), 3 doubles (one <, one popped triple, fall), 2 2A -- 2 triples, 2 doubles (one <), both 2A are in second half
Carolina: 5 triples (fall), 2 doubles (one popped triple), 1 1A (pop) -- 2 triples (fall), 1A (pop) are in second half -- lost 2 of her combos hence the missing 3 jumps

BV difference (includes urs): 57.08 vs 45.98

Caro had more clean, better-quality triples, but that and her single 1A are not enough to offset Satoko's extra triple, double, and two 2As. The BV difference is way too big to be closed by just better execution and PCS (especially since it was a non-clean skate so some elements definitely will have negative GOEs). Also, Caro's fall cost a lot more points from the BV than Satoko's fall (3S vs 2S), which is even worse with a significantly lower BV in the first place.

not going to bother looking at jump stats for SP since both were mostly clean, and Caro had a 6pt lead

for the record, I think they're both amazing skaters and bring different things to the table. But I'm all for fair scoring, and Caro should not have been higher than Satoko in the FS given the existing tech calls.

"given the existing tech calls"

Well, just my opinion, but Satoko should have gotten several more UR calls.

Alina's FS score (overscored) is a joke and Mirai's (underscored) is also a joke for the opposite reason.

Also Osmond getting the Yuna 150 FS score..... Her skate was good, but not 150 worthy, but with the way scores have been getting over inflated for certain skaters, I guess they had to give it to her at this point.

Super happy for Wakaba, she did great. This program is amazing and she performed it so well, nice to see her end the season on a good note after being crushed at last years world's, grand prix final, and nationals.

In a world where people's tech scores are completely fair across the board and components scores are only based on performance done on the occasion, not on past achievements maybe Bradie would have been bronze medalist since Carolina and Satoko barely did any triples and Alina fell down and URed many times.

Yes... there are a way more basic world champs and Olympic champs than Kaetlyn. She's not my fav but I didn't exactly see her as basic.

Rewatched the last 2 groups of FS and congrats to Kaetlyn, Wakaba and Satoko for the wins and getting back the spots for your countries. Much deserved. Overall, scoring is far too high for everyone but to different degree. Personally, my fave performance was Wakaba’s as it was a much more intense and I could feel how much she put into it. Kaetlyn was lovely but did not have Wakaba’s fire. I would have put Wakaba higher overall in the FP but that would still not be enough as she messed up the short. Overall positions are correct but I would have Wakaba first in the LP.

I am SCHOCKED!!!!! When i woke up this morning i read the edge to find that Osmond is world champion and Wakaba medaled. I was like "What the hell happened!!!"
The last group was just......i have no word.

What a lovely thread we have here.

If someone just read this you wouldn't need to wonder why this forum is 'supposedly anti-Canadian'.

Congratulations to Kaetlyn, Wakaba, and Satoko on their medals.

Positive thoughts to Alina and Carolina.

And lots of rest for Gabby to heal that sprained ankle.

I think a lot of skaters get mean spirited criticism they don’t deserve. Masha was quoted as saying basically how much it hurts her to read some of the things she finds about herself and that her and other skaters just want to skate and make the world her a better place.

So many mean things have been said about her and her programs this year but she too is a super sweet girl who works as hard as anyone else and has always kept it super classy. I just don’t understand how people can be so mean.

Yes to this! Poor Maria, I mean they don't even say her cheorography's bad they flat out call her boring (like how would they know what she's like in person). I actually like her tano arm (I don't know why? One of life's great mysteries ) and she's a sweetie on Instagram.

Plus her Exhibition skate is really fun! Perhaps she'll try something like that for a program next year, that'd be cool.

Also the personal dislike for Stanislava K is pretty shocking...you'd think she goes around kicking people's puppies! I haven't managed to watch her FS yet, I understand it went pretty badly :( I did like her skating at Junior Worlds though.

Congrats ladies! And feeling really sorry for Alina, it's just too much pressure for 15 y.o kid.

Medal for J/C and then another one for Miyahara! I'm extra happy now.

Again, don't wanna hear about any probable jump issues, she was robbed enough in PCS throughout season despite of her beautiful skating so...congratulations Satoko! You deserved it and even more!

Well, yeah, if she can't compete under pressure, then better retire now, bc it won't get easier.
So tired of all these excuses :rolleye:

Thrilling stuff. Wonderful podium. The wide shots really showed off Kaetlyn and Wakaba’s great ice coverage.

Alina is in the same boat as everyone else in that inconsistency made her much less impressive. When her jumps fail, it’s obvious how inflated her GOE is on the rest of the elements, and the bent over posture. Still, I expect this performance was a fluke.

I know this has no place itt, but since it's been brought up:

I've lurked here in the past from time to time, rarely posted but felt like I might as well starting late this season, so I'm aware there's been some sentiment that there's an "anti-Canadian" bias. I do see it, especially against Kaetlyn, and I'm not even really much of a fan of hers; love her jumps when they're on, feel an east coast connection to her, but that's it. I especially wish the Bash Canada in ways obvious and subtle would stop coming from people who go out of their ways to be kind to other skaters from other countries.

That said, I'm embarrassed by what I read in some posts that have a Canadian flag beside them. I keep hoping those folks are trolls pretending to be Canadian to stir up trouble but I know the reality is they probably aren't, they're just ultra-homer fans. On balance, they're fewer voices but, in a different way, just as ugly. I guess, for me, it's a wash. It's also about what I expect from a fan forum of any sort. People have favourites and, with a sport that's largely in the "Olympic sport" category, fans of home skaters first, and anti-fans of their direct rivals, are to be expected. GS, or any figure skating forum really, has nothing on what you read elsewhere for other sports - in comparison, this is a happy friendly love zone of international camaraderie.

Oh, and to be somewhat on topic, congrats again to the entire podium - and extra love for Wakaba, because I'm biased.
Hugs to Alina again, and her teammates after a scary near loss of those, much needed in Russia's case, three spots.
Hugs for Gabby too - 'cause I'm biased again - and also Caro, who came so close to a fairytale last big win at home.
Cheers for surprise breakout star Loena.

See you all soon for the men.

Well I don't agree with it either but with the current state of inflation it does not make any sense for Kaetlyn to get a 133. On an all time scale based on say 2010 scores then sure I agree.

You really don't seem to get it. The scores the skaters deserved at this competition has nothing to do with the scores skaters got in 2010. Kaetlyn deserved 133 for the LP exactly based upon the current rules. The judges overscoring people has nothing to do with the scores the skaters should be receiving. The overscoring is their fault and it should be corrected. The scores I gave are 100% justifiable and if I were in a judges' meeting, my scores would be far more reasoned, explainable, and given supporting evidence than what is the current state of affair with the judges, who are quite clueless and frequently unable to give credible arguments for their scores. But since they all do it and since the ISU does not have good systems in place, these conversations don't really happen, it's instead just based upon general campaigning of the federations.

Wakaba deserved to win this competition and if she was a bigger name skater and if the judges did score the competition as such, virtually nobody would be blinking an eye. Everyone at this moment would just be talking about her amazing comeback and perfect performance that deserved the victory, like when Mao won 2014 Worlds.

Well she was the wonder kid and nerves of steel for everyone when she won everything including OGM. And week and useless, and of course should retire just after first bad day...not surprised at all. Sounds pretty much like Eteri's slogan. And very probably she's gonna be another Lipnitskaya, won't make you wait for it too long.

As for me Alina talented and strong, but obviously very tired after tough season kid with huge pressure and mistakes...emphasizing: KID - a human being, not a robot! And an Olympic Champion! If it's just an excuse then okey.

Kaetlyn was wonderful, I loved her program so much. It was a program was just entertaining all throughout. She was so charismatic and I'm so happy she won Gold :yahoo:

Overall this competition was a huge splat.. none of the 3 medalists had 2 clean programs. Olympic gold medalist had the biggest splatfest, along with the home favourite and leader (and most accomplished skater here) popping her way to lose the lead she had (8 points!!) to not only not win, but end up off the podium by a couple spots. There always has to be one discipline that is disastrous, hopefully this will mean that mens FS will be great (one can only hope)!

But if you look at it in a different way, we have new faces on the podium that totally deserved their place and be recognized for the work they put out there. They shined when others couldn't.
Carolina was never a consistent free skate skater so no surprise there. Actually, it would be more of a surprise if she had been flawless or near flawless.
And this is a Worlds after the Olys. Everyone is exhausted.
