Vincent Zhou

@formersk8ter, thank you for that elaborate and extremely well-composed viewpoint. It was really enjoyable to read. They are most welcome, the longer the better . As I’ve mentioned before, sometimes I feel like the only person here rooting for Vincent. So I really appreciate any feedback, specially from a former skater, who has a different perspective from non-skating fans.

Personally, I think Vincent has as much or more fluidity and musicality than Jun-Hwa
Any compliment for Vincent is music to my ears  but I guess I need to elaborate. Musicality: Vincent exhibits more passion and heart and soul throughout his performances but his body movements (extensions, arm & hand movements, body gestures, etc.) in relation to the music need more work. Of course, I am a fan of Daisuke and Shoma, so I have different standards ;)

But seriously, Jun-hwan took ballet so his body dynamics are more refined and fluid. And he just naturally has a more elegant way of moving about. But it also has to do with him having more polished programs, being coached by Borser, and not having oodles of quads and jump elements to skate around :p. I am not being overly critical or nitpicky about my favorite, just concerned for him since both Jun-hwan and Dima are going to be his main international rivalries (from same age group) in the next quad cycle. And I know for certain that both of them are going to earn way higher PCS than my boy. BTW, just saw a GS article on Alexey Erokhov, who won the WJC. If he does well going into Seniors, then another competitor. Coincidence that all 3 were on the 2015 JGP Yokohama podium, isn't it?

Vincent has my support and, fingers crossed, he will soon have the support of most US figure skating fans as well!

Well, I am glad to hear you think so. I do realize there are many international posters on this board, and the overall feeling I get is that Vincent is regarded as chopped liver around here. And NBC’s Olympic and media coverage afterwards certainly did not do him justice. But things are changing and I foresee a bright and shiny future for him.

@yyyskate, I do not mean to put down Vincent’s coaching team and I know he is lucky to be training at the best FS facility in the country, but I am just frustrated and aggravated that he is losing out from low PCS and GOE deductions, despite having the most technically difficult programs. I don’t want to go into details as my negativity may be deemed inappropriate once again and get my post deleted :rolleye: :noshake:

@ice coverage, thank you also for your feedback.

IMO, it speaks well for Vincent's agent that Vincent is making six guest appearances with U.S. SOI this year.
One out of seven U.S. SOI shows for Vincent in 2017 was a good start, and six out of 22 U.S. SOI shows in 2018 is an increase.

Hmm, I guess I wasn’t looking at it from that perspective when yyystake mentioned marketing team. I saw that Vincent gave such a rousing and emotional performance at OG, placing a respectable 6[SUP]th[/SUP], that those shows reached out to him. And not that his agent/marketing team were “selling” him. He sold himself. But I see what you mean. He is getting noticed more. And after Ice Fantasia, hopefully he will get invited to Japan in the future.

I do have to agree with you that Nathan was more readily accepted as the dominant US man as soon as he showcased his quads at Seniors. While with Vincent, it's like "Oh, that was nice, he actually attempted 5 quads, good for him, but better luck next time in landing all of them and not under rotate." The comments make him sound like an afterthought. (oh, oh, here goes the griping again :palmf: :ohwell:)

Sorry for not quoting you ladies properly but my computer is acting up. Thanks again for all your constructive feedback. Good night!

Okay, these should be the last group of photos and videos from Ice Fantasia 2018. The show seemed to be well received in Korea and Vincent's Japanese fans traveled all the way just to see him. For one of the fans, if was her first time being out of Japan and flying on a plane. She really went through a lot of trouble. All that love! :luv17: But all of them said it was well worth it! Looking forward to another show next year!

A Sunday version of "Take On Me" was just uploaded, yay! You can visibly see an improvement in Vincent's performance! I am so proud of him.
B.T. Ice must have inspired those dance moves ;)

20180422 LG ThinkQ Ice Fantasia Finale Act2: When the skaters went around the rink to slap hands with the fans, Vincent picked up a gift bag from one of the lucky fans. Misha and Jun-Hwan went to get Brian Orser at around 4:37. And the most wonderful thing happened at 5:28, Boyang and Jin-Seo were hugging and Vincent skated up and hugged them. Then Yura went to join in the group hug. Silly Boyang almost strangled Vincent, LOL. Then another well-deserved hug for Misha. Aww, :ghug: everyone!

FYI, Stars On Ice website has a nice, long biography of Vincent

Instagram story of @lagibbs84 shows Vincent among the big group of Olympians and Paralympians visiting the White House this morning.

ETA:

Vincent can be spotted also at top left of this group photo including President Trump:

See also:

Alexa and Chris also have been posting from the White House.

(Vincent, the Knierims, and bobsled OSM Lauren Gibbs :luv17: also were among those who attended the Team USA Awards last night in Washington, DC.
As were Bradie and Karen [who per her own Instagram story was at the airport early this morning, no doubt headed to Pittsburgh, tonight's SOI stop].)

Vincent was called up to the podium by POTUS to say a few words. Said he was proud to represent the USA. POTUS said he had Vincent's quad shown in slow mo just to see that he really did 4 revolutions.

First post here at GS. Big Vincent fan here especially after today. He represented figure skating well.

Thx for your very informative first post, 16Olympics.

POTUS enters at approx. 19:00.

The short section with Vincent starts at approx. 28:00 (after the men's curlers).
How thrilling for him to be one of the small number who were singled out for recognition.

Seems that Trump spontaneously decided on his own to ask certain athletes to say a few words?
They did not seem to have been briefed in advance on that part, and some were quite tongue-tied.
OTOH, Vincent was one who showed a lot of poise.

Felt very proud of Vincent, some people may have issues with the POTUS. but celebration of Olympians, Olympic spirit and the inspiration it brought to this world is the right thing to do.
Vincent represented Olympians and Team USA well!:luv17:

Thank you. And, thanks for the link to the video. All of the athletes brought up to the mic were asked to speak but Vincent seemed to be most carefully articulate. I tried to catch a sighting of the Knierems but didn't see them in the televised part.

Thanks for the welcome. I have been lurking since before GPF, mostly in Nathan's FF and SOI. Love the news you all bring here.

Thanks @oatmella for linking this really nice ariticle from The Mercury News. As always, hometown bay area news group always write the best article for our hometown boy Vincent. just like The Salt Lake Tribute to Nathan.
Exactly the Vincent we kr:biggrin: and the sutbly hinted rivalry with Nathan, all so cute.

a few quotes:

"“Maybe I have a little social anxiety and I’m afraid to approach people,”"“I’m not a person who opens up easily. That’s why a lot of people who don’t know me think I am weird or cold. I’m not trying to be anti-social.” Vincent, we kr deep down you are expressive and has alot to communicate and share with others. just be yourself, if you are passionate about figure skating, start the conversation with your passion. Don't be shy to talk to petty girls;) (this is a Nathan joke).

"The teen hopes to develop better relationships with those on the Stars On Ice tour" :yahoo:

"Zhou plans to attack the next four seasons with the spirit that led to qualifying for the Pyeongchang Games." :yahoo:

I hope someday I can hike with Vincent in one of of those Rockie Montain trails. meanwhile enjoy his "verbose" chat.

Vincent's Take on Me performance with Stars on Ice in Anaheim:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lzNzXZGKzCA

Thanks for the link to the video. I attended the Phoenix show but my video and pics didn't come out good. Just had to say, the show was fantastic. I was disappointed in only seeing Vincent perform "Take On Me". He came out after the finale but did not skate, just stood at the side and watched the rest of the cast do their thing. He joined everybody in the final salute and farewell, but no skating. I had read many reviews and opinions of this year's SOI and was prepared to not expect the best from everybody but was more than pleasantly surprised. They were all consummate performers and gave it their all, even with only a half full venue. Seeing them in person gave me a completely different view. Very happy to have had the chance to see Nathan perform "Nemesis" live in his cute little black shirt. One thing that stood out is how he appeared much smaller in the group numbers than I had expected. I give a big thumbs up to everyone and my hats off especially to Jason & Adam for putting on such great performances. Here's hoping Mirai will incorporate some of that performance magic she showcased into her new numbers, and Jason and Karen will fix their jumps/skates next season as they are simply too fabulous to not do well in competitions.

Just popping into to say that when a skater is a "featured guest" for part of the SOI tour, like Vincent, they will perform their routines, but not perform the "Full Cast" routines, like Raise Your Glass or You Will Be Found, as they have not had the opportunity to practice. Is that what you mean? Also, did Vincent do what I call the "Soul Train" line up, where they introduce the skaters at the end of the show?

If you want to, you could always put your comments in the Stars on Ice USA thread, as I am sure that folks would appreciate your comments on the other skaters who might not necessarily view the Vincent Fan Fest. Glad you enjoyed the show:)

Thanks, el henry. I knew that he would not participate in the group numbers, but was expecting a little more than just one single exhibition number. I understand about the lack of time to change choreography to add another skater and time needed for rehearsals, but was still hoping for him to interact and skate a bit more during the finale. Here are a couple pics of group bow and group lineup found on Twitter. I will post in the SOI - US thread later. I know you are a Jason fan and he was absolutely stupendous! What a star he was!

I saw Vincent in today’s San Jose show and he was great!! The crowd really seemed to love it. Highlight was definitely when Vincent did the cantilever RIGHT IN FRONT OF US. Everyone was screaming! A super fun program and Vincent showed great performance quality and looked like he was having a lot of fun. He also looks quite tall!
