Kimmie gears up for Worlds

Apparently, the 3As do work in practice but she stated wisely, she'll study her competitors first before using one.

She got feedback from the judges to up her PCS scores. I agree and I would say she is showing some improvement.

On another link Sasha talks about her desire to skate with SOI someday.

If Sasha wants to join SOI, all she has to do is say the word. They'll snap her up in an instant.

I agree that's it's a wise strategic move, but it really burns me that her coach had to take a swipe at Michelle in an article a little while back ... where she said Kimmie was going to push the envelope and not play it safe as Michelle did. What's the difference with that and what she's doing? Why chance a risky move that you're not 100% with, if you can win without it?
I have to say, that has really put me in a different frame of mind about Kimmie. I know ... it's not fair to take it out on the athlete, when the coach was the one who made the comment. I just can't help how I feel. Every time I read about her possibly doing the 3A ... I just get thoroughly aggravated.

I really don't know much about Pam Gregory other than being Kimmie's coach. There are apparently many coaches there including Pricilla Hill. I don't know how Ron Ludington runs the ship.

Anyone know much about the Delaware Skating Club? and Gregory?

thanks for posting.

Nothing really new here, though...I'd just add that I have to wonder a little about the de-emphasis on the jumps since she has been making mistakes on them in comps throughout the season. I mean, improving presentation is what she *eventually* should get to, but those jumps are going to be important when dealing with the likes of Ando and Asada.

I agree with Red Dog. This quote kind of jumped out at me:

""They'd like her not to look so mechanical,'' said Gregory, adding that Meissner has been hitting her jumps consistently for about four years."

They must not be counting this year. She hit her triple flip/triple toe only once in four tries (at U.S. Nationals, with negative GOE). She fell on her triple Lutz/triple toe twice out of three tries in international competition (at U.S. Nationals the rotations were suspect in the short program and she missed the combo altogether in the long). She fell on her only attempt at the triple Axel this season. She popped a 1T (2nd jump of an intended combo) and a 1Lo at Eric Bompard; at Four Continents she popped a 1F.

That's a lot of points to sacrifice for more graceful arms.

A little bit OT, but in looking up Kimmie's jumps statistics I noticed one of those CoP peculiarities in Kimmie's SP score at Skate America.

On her triple flip the GOEs of the ten judges were

-1, -1, -1, -1, -1, 0, 0, +1, +1, +1

Yet she ended up with a positive GOE for the element overall. The only way that could happen is if the random draw, by Kimmie's good fortune, chose three of the five -1s to eliminate, keeping all the positives and zeros.

After eliminating yet another of the -1s (and a +1) in the trimming prcess, this left

-1, 0, 0, +1, +1

for an average of +0.2.

Sometimes it's better to be lucky than to be good. :)

Uhhm I hope you are wrong about that. I want skaters to win on the merits and not based on the whim of the scoring. ;-)

While Kimmie is not my favorite skater, but then neither is Mao. Both to me are doing what the choreographer TELLS them to do. I don't see anything of them in their skating. Kimmie did win the 2006 World Championships and beat out our own Sasha in doing it. The jumps could not have been that bad for KImmie. I think the title of World Champ frightened her as well pleased her. She was not expectin it nor was she going for it.

But, if we continue to nitpick.... watch out for Yu Na Kim. Your hopes of Kimmie losing is quite possible.

Joe

nobdy is a shoe in for gold. Mao, who probaly whould have easily won last year, is not coming into the competion unbeatable at all. Her triple axel has been landed this year, but not in international competion, and she certainly won't do two as she did at japanese natioanls in 2005. Kimmie probably won't need the triple axel to win, unless mao lands it. It will be like the men at natioanls. Johnny only did a wuad, because evan did. Kimmie is probably hoping she will skater after mao, and then decide her moves based on mao's performncae.

Well, what will she do if she draws a skate before Mao? She'll still have to assume Mao is going to do it. Basically, if she wants the gold, she has to have the 3A ready and any talk to the contrary implies she's only fighting for silver or bronze.

I'll balance it out, though, by giving credit to her- making a mistake in her program REALLY seems to put the fight into her and she makes doubly sure that she doesn't make another one for the rest of the program. In other words, she doesn't let it break her, she lets it motivate her throughout the rest of the program.

Also, Asada hasn't been completely solid, either. She followed a mediocre SA with a strong NHK, and then followed with another mediocre GPF, falling TWICE. Didn't see her JN performance but heard it was strong. (See a trend here? Uh-oh. ;) )

It may only take one bobble or misstep to put you out of WC contention- so not only Kimmie but Mao needs to watch it as well.

I think if kimmie doesn't have a triple axel their is a reasonable chance she won't medal at all; unless her presantation can rise to the level of high sevens in three weeks.

I don't know. If they leave out their triple axels, doesn't Mao still outscore Kimmie? Mao has like fifty loops in combination while Kimmie only has toes. Plus, Mao tends to get higher GOEs on her jumps. I would say that for Kimmie to beat a clean Mao, she would have to hit her triple axel. If Mao does everything clean, including the 3axel, I think she's pretty much untouchable.

I only hope that in the process of trying to improve Kimmie's presentation that she doesn't try too hard. IMO that can be just as bad as having none at all. (I tend to hate "fake emoting" on the ice.) If she doesn't have it she doesn't. When she was talking about arm movements- sorry Kimmie fans but all I could think of was, "Airplane arms!!"

that said, I really liked what I saw at 4CC's from her and I hope she continues to improve, and hopefully gets the jumps down pat. I want a performance of that program that's performed well so I can add it to my collection- I do like it a lot.
