Vincent Zhou

The more precise translation of what the Russian lady says on the clip background is ‘momma mia, what a lutz, real pretty’ or ‘dear me, what a lutz’ etc

Thanks so much for translating, Lariko! Do you speak Russian? Because there are a few commentaries that I would love to find out what they said. My guess is the lady is Tatiana Tarasova. She sounded like she was talking to a baby.

Latest IG post: Looks like Vincent decided to be more "socially active" :) and took group photos with Team USA (minus poor Nathan, who must be recuperating from the illness) and Team Japan (where's coach Hamada?). He also posted a pic with Nam, from the chest down. Namnamnoodle commented: Damn man I thought I looked pretty dapper. Sorry, nam, you wish!

Hi mom-to-be! Here is the GIF: Vincent smelling the flowers

Just got home from work. Had to do OT today, getting up before 4:30am again. So tired. Haven't had chance to go through all my social media feed but here is a video clip showing Vincent smelling the roses. What is so adorbs is that he twirled the bouquet around a couple of times, and was looking lovingly at the flowers. Ah! What a wonderful world it is! Our sweet child! Thank goodness he did not have an allergic reaction like he did here and at US Champs. Glad WTT gave out that pretty bouquet, instead of the Thanksgiving decoration from Worlds, lol.
The same lady (Beth) who made the above GIF also made a bunch of other Vincent GIFS:

Was it TAT? She sounded so sleepy.

Yay! I just found the WTT Victory Ceremony video so I'm going to watch it now and come back later tonight with more stuff when I have more time to sort through all my feed.

Aww... thank you kindly, Zenchio63! It's even more adorable than I remember!:love: Vince is way too cute and he's not even trying -- he's just there being his sweet, reserved self! And lovely nickname for me as well. Thank you! My baby Ethan just gave you a wink and a grin from inside me! ;);)

Yup, I have some Russian, so I can translate. She was very complimentary of Zhou’s lutz, and it cuts off as she identifies it as a quad and starts to mention overhead arms position, but it is harder to hear.

You're so welcome, MTB! Oh, wow, Ethan is one of my all time favorite names! The thought of your baby Ethan giving me a wink and a grin just tickles my heart to no end! Thank you both! :luv17:

Yes, Vincent is adorable when he is just being himself. But when he "tries" to be funny in his own geeky way, things get a bit confusing. :scratch2: . Examples:

Showing his "belly" during Team USA intro, rubbing legs
Trying to look funny in Ashley's IG post & IGS

Also, you can tell what a courteous & reserved person he is by the fact that he gets blocked in the group photos, and almost got left out during the wreath crowning, and at the end of the gala when he let others bypass him to get off the ice.

Thanks again, baby Ethan! Giving you a ;) & a  back at ya!

Oh, thank you! Somebody uploaded a version of the FS with Russian commentary here. It may get deleted soon so check it out while it lasts.
Would you be kind enough to give us a general translation of what was said?

Also found a video of the SP, where much of the commentary was given after the skate ended (during review). Would love to know what they thought of the skate.

Thank you so much in advance for your help.

Here are the rest of the links I found. Some wonderful people uploaded videos but who knows how long it will be before they are deleted. So hurry & save them!

I interviewed the skaters last night, and I felt that he (Vincent) was an intelligent and a loving young man. I was also delighted to see that I was from the same place in San Jose, California.

Here is the transcript of the Free Skate. I used FC for the female commentator, and the MC for the male one. I took some liberties with colloquialisms and put Russian literal expressions or implied meaning in brackets

MC... we are about to start the performances by the two skaters from the USA, the team that prior to the start of the FS took two top spots in this tournament

MC: we are still under the spell of Shoma Uno’s Performance who has just moved Japan into the first place.

FC: under the spell...

MC: and now we are going into two Americans’ Free Skates, Vincent Zhou and Nathan Chen

@1:11 FC: Dear me, what a lutz, quad, with two arms
@11:33 Salchow
@2:14 Toeloop, four (rotations)
@2:59 Axel, three-and-a-half, with a double toeloop on its heels (on its tail in R)
Axel, three-and-a-half
@3:58 lutz Euler salchow

@4:52 FC: Magnificent. Simply magnificent.
@8:27 FC: What I want to tell the (sport) journalists, if you take Shoma Uno, for example... Don’t you write that (this?) competition is just about money. They are not paid all that well, they are not football players.

You don’t go all out (R: kill yourself) like this for money. You go all out like this for glory, for records, for your standing in te sport that you’ve dedicated your life to.

To be the first in (your) discipline, to land a jump.

Do you see how they bust their guts out? How they overcome themselves? How they try something new in the end of the season? And it sticks with them that they could do more next year.

That if you’ve skated this, you could add on, you could afford...

...aha, here is that quad with those arms

@6:27 oh, my god! (The feed cuts the sound out)

@7:48 (feed is back on, where Zhou is pounding the ice in triumph, in replay)

FC: What a joy! This person had done it! Today, both Uno and him demonstrated that there is no limit to perfection.

No limits on perfection...

@8:10 MC: Attention on the score! The score should be close to being off the charts... 198 and a half points!

Vincent Zhou, and the Americans are now close to winning two first positions, just like in the short program!

This is the commentary after his short program. There are two male commentators, and I am not keeping to which one of them says which line, just splitting it when I can hear that the voice is a bit different.

@6:15
MC1: Here you have it, a human machine (R: terminator with a human face), VZ. He wins over the audience, and a standing ovation from his teammates. And he, himself...
FC: yes, very good...
MC1... what has he done! (It is not a complete sentence, the MC is sort of gushing). And the audience is jumping up to their feet. Absolutely phenomenal performance!
FC: Would only that ours did as well...

MC2 (smoothly cuts in, lol): You know, we’ve discussed lots of our impressions from the world’s, lots of emotions. And I was thinking about the figure skaters and their jumps, layouts, “What else could we possibly see now? But to see the quad lutz, and with arms up in the air...”
FC: with arms up...
MC2: Not even with one arm, with TWO arms... and also a combo with the triple toeloop (R: cascaded with 3T)...

Now all we have left to wait for is the quad (axel?)
Ah, I think, in principle, they will be able to do it in the nearest future.

MC1: Yes, let’s hope so.

FC (cuts in smoothly): He (Zhou) is so flexible, and has such an excellent feel for the music.
Ah, there you go! (She is reacting to the replay of his jump here)

MC1: I am under the impression that the State’s team attends without their coaches. We have not seen a single one of them yet.

(All together) yes, not Raf, nor Christie, nor Zakrajchik.

FC: They are all working now. Back to work rather than attending the competitions.

mC1: yes, they are working, and their guy here is putting out something out of this world.

FC: Because it’s time for setting up the programs....

mC1: Cltuching your head (amazing) // I cannot think of anything save ‘amazeballs’ to translate the expression//

FC (with a mounting frustration): That’s because you need to set up, and teach the new programs. It’s not a good time for the coaches to go traipsing around now.

MC2: let’s see now, will he get a hundred?
MC1: In all likelihood, yes.
MC2m Let us see if VZ reaches up to 100! He did it for the first time in the WC

FC: Now, he will reach there, and we’ll slide to third position.
MC1: Ah, Lena, why so sad? Let’s see, and have faith.

FC: Why? Where else do we have to go?

MC1: yes! VZ receives the score above 100! 100.51.
It is an improvement over his WC (score). Japan keeps on giving the best skates to this 18 yo athlete.

MC2: absolutely deserved.

OMG, lariko! Thank you for taking the time to do such a fine job with your detailed, professionally laid out translations! I forgot you are in Canada, where the videos are not blocked. Glad I saved the videos the other day because they have already been deleted: "Video unavailable. This video contains content from NBC Universal, who has blocked it in your country on copyright grounds."

I just rewatched the videos while reading your translations. You don't know how appreciative & gratifying it is for me to understand the compliments from the Russian commentators. Granted, I haven't had the opportunity to hear Johnny & Tara, nor CBC commentaries to compare, but there is no way they would get this excited nor complimentary of Vincent's jumps/performances. To tell you the truth, I was a bit apprehensive with TAT, since she is known for giving blunt criticisms. But to hear her praise Vincent: "He is so flexible, and has such an excellent feel for the music." really warms my heart. I know Vincent's style is not everyone's cup of tea and he still has a long way to go and grow into a more "natural" and "fluid" skater, but the way the critics are dissing him (their way of virtue signaling) simply show how biased they are. He wasn't given brownie points nor favored for his PCS scores. They may be generous compared to other competitions, but the same "generosity" is applied to all other skaters at WTT. Vincent deserves all the praise and respect just for going all out at the end of the season and trying a new jump element (Rippon 4Lz), same way Shoma did with trying the 3A-4T. Not to mention his performance level & skating really did improve dramatically under Hamada's coaching. I'm seeing comments that suggest he should move to Japan and train with her as head coach, LOL.

BTW, they omitted Tammy when mentioning the coaches, and also Bradie's coach was there.

Just read somewhere that the fast talking guy is probably Alexander Grishin, and the other is Yagudin. It is so much more satisfying to hear commentators that talk about the sport (the skaters not doing it for money but for the love of the sport, trying something new, going all out) rather than J&T's (and Terry's) frequent inane, sophomoric rantings & citing information without giving any insight nor soul.

"Human machine". "Amazeballs"! Love that!

Thank you again, lariko! You should be a professional translator! Spasibo! :luv17:

Aww, thanks. It was a lot of fun to listen to it, the group dynamic in the SP was sweet, the Excitable Guy, the Reasonable Guy and the Lady Sour Grapes. :)

I agree with this bunch (except when the Lady puts down Lazukin who imo did as good as could be expected, unless it was a dig at Samarin specifically) and the audience’s reaction was indicative when you watch the video. I feel that Zhou is breaking out of the ‘decent & unremarkable’ group :) I hope for more in the same line from him next season, and if it means training in Japan, fingers crossed it is possible!

A very nice article from Japan Times on Vincent's collaboration with Hamada:
https://www.japantimes.co.jp/sports...-hamada-helps-zhou-find-success/#.XLXVIutHaK0

“His main coach, Tammy Gambill, asked me to teach him,” Hamada stated, when asked how the partnership began. “I have been teaching him (Vincent) for almost two years.”

I wondered if the language barrier was an obstacle for the two.

“The technical terms are almost the same, so it’s easy to communicate about skating,” Hamada noted.

I wanted to know what she felt Zhou must do to get to the next level.

“He has to work more on his edges and basic skating skills,” Hamada commented. “He is going to be a champion if he gets the passion and good edges, because he already has very good quality jumps.”

oh my goodness JACK GALLAGHER's article!!!

Hi, yyyskate, I know English is not your first language so if you would allow me to explain the following:

The term soulmate is usually reserved for either romantic relationships or people whom you have a very strong personal bond & close relationship with in which you both bring the best out of each other. I feel it is inappropriate to use this term for a coach/teacher/mentor. Coach Hamada does the same for Satoko & Rika (bringing out their best), I'm sure, but it would be totally inappropriate to call her their soulmates. Hope that makes sense to you.

Hi, Vincent's Japanese fan club uploaded the video in which he answered some fan questions. He was very relaxed, amiable, & answered in detail.
Questions include WTT, gala, inspirations, etc.

SOI IG has 2 posts with Vincent:

Picture with Bradie, Madi & Zach: "Look who's here - straight from their World Team Trophy win in Japan!"
Video showing everybody, Jeremy saying: "That's a wrap from day two!"

Lastly, banquet pictures from Shoya Ichihashi's IG.

 what word or phrase you could recommend to describe the relationship between Hamada Sensei and Vincent? I am all ears.

I will write more about this when I got a break, unfortunately, last night I didn't have one... if I have any spare time. i will definitely contribute more to Vincent's FF, have promised to do many things (e.g. little thesis:biggrin:) but ... Maybe, I could learn time management from Nathan.

Well, for something that has less of a teen werewolf romance vibe, i could suggest ‘kindred spirits’, ‘partners in crime’, or A-team? Allies, confederates, dynamic duo, fellows... I am out of synonyms.

But I get what you are trying to say :)

Oh, lariko, you have a great sense of humor..."teen werewolf romance vibe" :laugh2: Thanks for the good laugh & cringe!
But yeah, thanks also for your great suggestions. Sorry I didn't have time nor chance to reply at work this morning, yyyskate. I'm also lacking ample time to spend on the internet these days... Please take your time to share your thoughts. Now that it's off season, we won't have much going on other than SOI. So we can take a breather and find more time to add more content in the ensuing months.

Hamada's teaching style being perfectly suited to Vincent's personality as a student (A+, hardworking, diligent, motivated, respectful, etc.) does not necessarily mean they have a "special" bond that is out of the realm of a good teacher/student relationship. The word that comes to mind is "simpatico", but of course they have the shared interest in figure skating. Having compatible personalities & a mutual understanding should be part and parcel of a successful, ongoing teacher/student relationship. So as much as I love to make a big deal out of their relationship, and I do think Hamada Sensei has the magic touch and was able to bring another side out of Vincent in such a short span of time, it does not warrant special terminology as of this moment. As much as I love the term "kindred spirits", lariko, the fact that all figure skating coaches have the same interests & goals as their students kind of make that redundant.

I love "A-team" or "Dynamic Duo", but so far, we've only witnessed 2 competitions with her, so it is still too early to tag on such special terminologies. My take for "Partners in Crime" would be for an ongoing relationship such as maybe Shae-Lynn & Nathan. But then again, her choreographing great programs for him could simply be due to her creativity and deep understanding of his personality/style, and not necessarily that only Nathan can be her muse. I guess my main point is that good teachers bring out the best in their students and vice versa. Coach Hamada & Vincent seem to have a simpatico relationship & mutual understanding, and they get on well with each other, but does it warrant special terminology?

I hope for more in the same line from him next season, and if it means training in Japan, fingers crossed it is possible!

Well, lariko, as Hamada explained in the Ice Time article on Japan Times, there are restrictions placed by Kansai University, where her rink is located. I don't think North Americans realize that US & Canadian coaches can take on all these international skaters because they have the facilities with ample coaching staff. Smaller federations like Japan need to focus on and reserve their (coaching) talents for their own skaters, first and foremost. As much as I love Hamada, Vincent needs to stay & train on home turf in CO. It would be great if he can go to Japan again next summer and train for a month, like a summer camp, outside of doing ice shows. Maybe some of the ice shows in Japan can invite him if Nathan is unavailable, now that he is a Worlds medalist & is gaining more recognition.

It's really commendable that Tammy was the one who asked Hamada to coach Vincent. Hopefully, Vincent has learned enough skating skills & jump technique (good alignment) from Hamada to be able to incorporate those into his daily trainings back home.

Second part of Vincent's Q&A video from JP Fan Club has been uploaded. A 3rd part will be uploaded later on, where he spoke about next season.

Ah, makes sense - I guess in Canada we might have one of the highest arena ice sq.footage per person. :)

Well, fingers crossed he could do a Japanese immersion before the season starts or something. It would be lovely to see VZ to keep that momentum up.
