i think if both of them throw down solid skates there's a good chance they'll get 3 spots back. it would be so sad to have one girl's dream snatched away next year. i couldn't imagine being in that 3rd spot with a 2 person team.
5th and 8th? If clean with 3 landed 3As Liza will beat Bradie. But this is a big "if". Hence I am fine with Bradie's 5th place. Karen is a question, though. She has to be perfect to beat 3 of Liza, 2 Koreans, Satoko, and Loena.

thanks for sharing, i've always wanted to watch this series but couldn't find it anywhere!
This is kind of sad to watch. I was at Nationals in 2011 when Alissa won and she was brilliant. For some reason, the pressure seemed to get to her in 2006 and 2010 and she missed the Olympics both times.

It's not totally impossible or improbable for Karen to be ahead of the Koreans, Satoko and Loena. the judges definitely like her more than Loena and probably even the Koreans, and Satoko has a huge UR problem. if the technical panel is strict she will 100% be dinged. from what i have seen, all of them have around the same scoring potential.

i don't expect Bradie to beat Liza, but again it's not impossible if Liza isn't clean. she is extremely beatable if she makes mistakes.

very much agree. Alissa is one of my all time favorite skaters, she had it all when she could put it together- skating skills, nice jumps, interpretation, grace, class, and those SPINS. but she always had a problem with delivering under pressure until she switched to Yuka and Jason, and by that time it was too late for her to try to go for another olympics. her body couldn't do it anymore.

I think Karen has been in the best physical and mental shape since she’s been an adult this season. She has everything she needs to skate well! 5th and 8th is definitely possible, but I won’t be holding my breath. They’ll do what they can do :)

Edit: Actually, I will be holding my breath. But I’m aware that it’s not exactly likely, just possible.

I still think it's strange that Mariah Bell missed the team, She was really pushed by the Fed and I think they were expecting big things from her.

i mean there really wasn't justifying putting her on the team after a 5th place showing at nationals. its too low for them to make a case.

I agree. Maybe she didn't train well but, she had a disappointing Nationals after being so great in 2020

It’s strange...towards the beginning of the season I thought they’d lost their chance to gain three spots but now I actually think they have a better shot now than they did last year! With Alyona and Young You there was a good chance that the best either Bradie or Mariah could do would 6th, and the other would HAVE to be 7th (which would’ve meant both of them had to beat both Wakaba and Satoko...not impossible, but still a challenge especially if Mariah buckled under the pressure like she did at Nationals).

This season though it’s a different story. The Japanese ladies are more threatening with Kaori finding her form again, but the absence of Alyona and Young You is huge. Bradie could feasibly get 4th! 5th I believe is more likely but she has a better shot at a higher position then she did last season. Karen’s potential score is comparable to Yelim, Haein, and Loena’s and with a little luck and two good programs she could find herself in 8th (possibly even 7th if Satoko struggles, which would essentially guarantee three spots). She can finish as low 9th if Bradie manages 4th which means just beating two of those three.

A lot has to go right and they’ll both need to be as clean possible but they really could earn three spots for Beijing!

The problem for the non-Russian skaters is that they just haven't competed much this season, whereas the Russians are battle-tested and have shown that they're ready to go. Liza has already competed 5 times this season, Sasha 5 times, and Anna 4 times, all while battling various illnesses. Each has as many, or more, competitions under her belt than the entire Japanese team (4), the entire US team (4), or the entire Korean team (2). Personally, I think anything can happen beyond the Russians and Rika occupying the top 4 places, and Bradie/Karen following right after that group and getting back 3 spots would not surprise me at all.

Has Worlds made a final decision on whether or not there will be an audience?

From the official site:

“Because of the current pandemic and the local restrictions that are in place today in Stockholm, we cannot have any tickets for sale to the ISU World Figure Skating Championships 2021. There will not be any audience on site. Our main goal right now is to create an event that is safe for the participants.

We will update you where you can follow the Championships digitally in different countries as soon as possible.”

A 6th and 7th will do it too. Improbable, but not impossible.

Loena makes it tougher; if she can one better her Challenge Cup skate, it will be a top 6-7 finish for her most likely.

Or, the fed can fast track some Russian ladies’ naturalization. Haha

For Bradie to be 4th Liza would have to really mess it it. And I think that she will bring out her big guns. Bradie will get higher GOEs on spins but Liza will get higher GOEs on jumps.
Their PCS should be comparable. Even if Liza falls on Axel I'm sure that she will try to make it up somehow, that girl can think on ice and this is most possibly her last worlds.

Tbh it would be a great shame for someone still jumping doubles to be 4th.

My prediction is Bradie 6th and Karen 11th.

I think the US ladies had a better shot of the three spots last year because the Japanese ladies (bar Rika) were weaker, and Bradie and Mariah had competed more, both with significant international success (Bradie made GPF, Mariah won two GP medals). However, this year, since no one has competed internationally, it's much harder to predict how the international judges feel. So maybe since the Korean ladies are weaker and the third Russian lady isn't guaranteed a top 4 placement this year, it's a little easier? It's hard to say, imo it's about the same difficulty as last year, only way more unpredictable.

I think the U.S. has a very good chance, mainly because Young You and her triple axel have been removed from the equation. I believe Brady will be at least 5th, and Karen ending up 7th or 8th is absolutely doable. Both have a huge PCS advantage over the Korean ladies. This year I think only 2 of 3 Russians will be top 5, and only 2 of 3 Japanese ladies will be top five.

I think three spots are unlikely for both the American ladies and the Korean ladies. Bradie ( if she has continued her improvement since her last competition) will likely be between 4-6. I would wager 5 because her GOE and PCS internationally are generally better than Liza's and she is more stable than Kaori so she is likely to beat at least one of them if she is clean. However, that means Karen has be 8th or higher. I think that is unlikely. Loena and the Korean girls will likely outscore her because they don't have significant UR issues. International judges on the Junior Grand Prix loved Haein and Leona also gets high GOE and PCS. Yelim may not get high PCS/ GOE but her jump rotation is significantly better than Karen's. Satoko could score higher than Karen, too (although they have similar UR problems). I see Karen 10th/11th. ( She has the 11th highest International score among the ladies attending World's). She might do better if the technical panel is lenient but so will Satoko. Highly unlikely for the US to get three spots, but ice is slippery and if a few skaters from other nations do badly and the US ladies skate to their full potential it isn't impossible.

Loena Hendrickx is at disadvantage, however. Her World Standing is low (#74) because after finishing 9th at Worlds 2018 and 12th in 2019, she was absent from competition until late 2020 at a Challenger and early 2021 at Challenge Cup, and neither of those competitions awarded any ISU standings points. So she will likely be in the first 2 or 3 groups to skate. Making top 12 for the FS isn't going to be easy. Yes, she was great at Challenge Cup, but the competition there was no where near what she will face at Worlds.

True, but she has a lot of international experience and she has done well in both of her Challengers this year, not just Challenge Cup ( which is traditionally scored conservatively). I wouldn't count her out. It might effect her SP score a bit, but I imagine she will be in a better position going into the LP.

This does bring up an important point though... World Standing in terms of when skaters will skate in the SP. If I understand correctly, Rika, Bradie, Anna, Sasha, Kaori and Satoko will skate in the final group. This should benefit Kaori and Bradie's scores as compared to Liza who will be in the second to last group with Yelim and some higher ranked European Skaters like Eva-Lotte, Paganini and Ryabova. Karen is at #39 in World Standings, will she be a seated skater? Anyway, it won't help her scores. I have more confidence that a skater like Loena will fully rotate her 3-3 in the SP. Karen rarely rotates her 3-3 in the SP and if she is in a later group she isn't going to get a good score.
