Who can defeat the Russian Women in 2021-22?

there's nothing "wrong" with them, but she needs to show she's on the same level as the other top ladies in the world. juniorish, childlike programs aren't going to do her any favors at all in an Olympic season when Kamila, Dasha and Maiia will be showing they aren't juniors anymore and want to be taken seriously as top skaters in the world.
What was childlike about her programs? Sometimes I wonder if the critics have even watched them.

Where can I see her progress? Last time I saw her (US Nats?) she couldn't rotate her triples.
She had one downgraded triple at Nationals. That was all. She rotated all of her triples in the short program and in the long, doubled her flip in combo with the salchow, which was downgraded. She did a clean 3Lz-3T in the second half of both programs.

I sometimes get the feeling that to some a program doesn't count if it's not to heavy piano music with soulful looks and a SRS BSNS costume.

You can't really bemoan the abundance of warhorses and same old same old programs in the sport at the same time as shooting down everything that's a little bit different.

This is probably going to get a lot of hate, but lots of people think a performance is "childlike" for the sole reason because Alysa actually smiles when she skates. So I guess smiling is bad now. When you watch the Russian girls, you can see the terrified looks on their faces as they assume their opening positions. Valieva looks like she's about to have a panic attack.

Alysa does not need to develop her skating in line with the terms of the Russians. Not all skaters have to perform a certain way to be considered serious. Not all programs have to be warhorses. The Russians are like carbon copies of each other, like circus performers trying to outperform one another with the same music, same choreography, same styles of programs, rather than embodiments of the individuality and meaning behind skating. Maybe it would be even better if Liu skated faster, but to me that is all minor in comparison to the big picture she presents, how her skating radiates ease and suppleness, and how she herself radiates a seemingly infinite beam of light. The truth is, if the Russians have set a certain bar, it is only a temporary one. Liu has something far more rare, unforgettable, and long-lasting to offer.

I actually prefer skaters selecting "age appropriate" music, and I think her programs work for her, as they did for Tara Lipinski when she won her OGM. However, not everyone shares my opinion, and skating to music that feels junior-ish probably does highlight attributes of her skating that are less developed, particularly her speed and use of edges (i.e. compare her axel entrances to Alena's and you see a huge difference). She's working hard to improve in those areas, and I think if she gets that 3A back and keeps the other triples she will compete well against the international field.

there's no need to tear others down just to lift your favorite up.

Yeah, sure

agree with this. when i talked about her programs earlier, i should have said i was mainly talking about her short program this season. IMO, it was a miss and like you said, i think it emphasized her weaknesses. i did like her FS however.

I think Alysa has lots of potential, and she’s one very talented and hardworking girl. However, she still has a long way to go reach the bar set by russians.
Although you seem to think they are all “carbon copies” with the same music and style, I don’t think I can agree with that. Neither can Alysa.
Clearly Alysa sees them as individuals, since she mentioned several of them as her idols. She looks up to them, and wants to be like them. I recall her saying she wants to jump like Trusova and skate like Kostornaya. She also mentioned she’s a fan of Alina’s skating. Not only does it show that she has a good head on her shoulders to see strong sides of established skaters like Aliona and Sasha, but she also shows utmost respect and admiration towards them. So whatever you were thinking, you’re currently witnessing Alysa trying to be like some of the “carbon copies” you hate so much.

And she also mentioned Anna as one of her role models.

There is a Russian girl who "skated like Alysa did." Alena Kostornaia.
:scratch2:

i don't understand what you're trying to say. Alysa is a 2x senior national champion, Aliona was 16th (2nd to last) at nationals at the junior level the year before she went to Eteri. she did have an expiration date on her back and she knew it. and she had never competed internationally at that point and was a nobody...now there is no comparison between the two skaters. i guess i don't understand

No.
Alyona didn't skate 1A 3Lz 2A+2T 2Lo 3Lz+2T 2F+Eu+2S 2F like Alysa did at Las-Vegas inv.
And Alyona is 17, while Alysa is 15.
Alysa watered down her program at LVI due to an injury.

From a Phil Hersch article: https://olympics.nbcsports.com/2021/01/08/alysa-liu-figure-skating-nationals/

"Liu was just beginning to adjust to her physical changes when she hurt her right hip on a wonky triple axel landing during practice at the free skate-only team event. She wisely watered down the program there, popping the solo triple axel and doing far more double jumps (seven) than triples (two)."

Alysa skated much better at US Nationals. And does it make it better that AK may have lost a step at 17?

Did you watch US Nationals? She skated much better. Clean short program with 3lz-3T in second half. A costly mistake in the long on a combo but another 3Lz-3T in second half and the rest of her jumps good.
