2022 Winter Olympics: Rhythm Dance

H/B's RD makes me wish that they had stayed with Igor, or gone to Carol Lane, or anything else. But I'm so happy that they are loving this experience.

In other news, Weir does not think that ice dance is figure skating. Apparently, it is just cousin of real figure skating.
You have no idea how often I say "for the love of God go somewhere else!" Especially now that the new school has been opened. Literally if I had the money I would PAY to send them there. But she loves IAM and will never leave. Him I am not so sure.

Again, Montreal should be booed and hissed for foisting yet another disco program off as "blues," but H/B's dance actually did have a BLUES feeling. No it wasn't the best technical pattern, but for me it was the ONLY pattern I've seen so far that actually conveyed what I think a Midnight Blues pattern should be: sultry, sexy, a bit languid. The dance equivalent of foreplay.

I do wish the powers that be would stop foisting what they think as "hip" and "street" patterns on the Olympic season, in the hope that it will pull in a younger audience. It doesn't. I'd rather see a great Golden Waltz or even (yes, I'm going to say it) a Yankee Polka than this mishmash of "desperate to be relevant and contemporary" styles on the RD. If that is the wish, why not create a contemporary pattern that truly is contemporary.Remember, hip hop is heading into its FIFTH decade as a musical genre. But given how the FD official world is about 75 years behind the times, that's par for the course for them.

Love you H/B. Glad to see you in first at the moment. You bring it.
There were a variety of dances that could have been used including Krump. I get the feeling Krump is really difficult to do though.

P/C - Technically superb, artistically innovative. Not their highlight clip but fantastic
S/K - Ticked the boxes technically-clever masks of weaknesses, typical slightly over-the-top artistry
H/D- Very sharp technically, Jacksonesque artistry which may have brought them down a bit with less emotion
C/B - Technically sound but a few blips, Eilish is tough to skate to with its subtle, moody nuances
S/B - Again, technically sound, good performance but not special for me
G/P - Too many little blips in the tech, performance never quite lived up to the bright orange costumes
G/F - Thought they deserved slightly higher tech scores, performance good but not their wheelhouse
FB/S- Too many tech slips, Nick is a little stiff in his performance - I think he is there to make Laurence happy
S/D - Thought they deserved slightly higher tech scores, Adrian seemed a little stiff, Olivia shined-would have put ahead of FB/S
F/G - So cute they seem to get a pass in some tech deductions, great personality on ice but didn't love this - would have behind H/B
H/B - Never got this dance. too many tech slips, performance didn't grab me - Jean-Luc is a fabulous skater
You need to watch the fluff pieces about Nik and Lolo... Nik is crying pretty much the whole time. It's his dream to be at the Olympics and they tried to do it for Denmark and it failed... maybe he is stiff, fair enough, but I wouldn't say he is there to make Laurence happy... it's a lifelong dream for him too.

Congrats to P/C on their record!! I will say that their were pretty overscored with the twizzle out of unison at the end of their footwork (like I wouldn't give the SS/PE a 10 or +5s), but it's still worthy of a record and very well-performed.

H/D were also sensational.

As much as I hate S/K's RD, it was probably the best they've skated it. Still should be behind both American teams, but whatevs. Proud of G/P for making final flight but wish the Italians could be in it too.

I guess the Eteri effect didn't exactly work in Davis/Smolkin's favour this time... wonder if the Kamila scandal had something to do with them getting scored as they should and not getting any preferential treatment?

I missed the live rhythm dance event but I do have Peacock to watch the replay. For my fellow FS fans, I had a few questions as I’m hopelessly lost and want to better prepare for the FD.

1. Did USA Channel show the RD live with commentary by Tanith and Johnny on TV? Did NBC show it live as well that early in the morning?

2. Does USA Channel livestream on their app or via Peacock’s app? Did NBC app or NBC Sports App livestream the RD?

3. If anyone has Peacock, do they have the commentary version of the broadcast? I can only find the raw footage.

Thanks in advance!
1. I don't know, I wasn't up.

2. I can almost never find the USA footage afterwards. This coverage is a sheep show.

3. Figure skating is the ONLY SPORT Peacock has no commentary on.

So, I watched it via stream on CBC.

I don't know how S/K is ahead of H/D (or less than 2 points behind the French for that matter), because H/D skates with more power, command and precision. FWIW, their music is more 'adult' than the teeny bop music of the RUS pair. Actually, both RUS pairs look like they string a bunch of point-getting elements together.

I would have it -

1. P/C
2. H/D
3. S/K
4. G/P
5. C/B
6. S/B

I understand the humor (I think) but not as the stereotyping, in the same way some football fans will never watch figure skating because it’s funny looking people dressed up in funny looking costumes “dancing” on ice.

I don’t care about the Super Bowl so much this year because the teams have no connection to me, but I love my aggro men on the Eagles, and I love Jason Brown.

Both can be possible:)
Was only speaking for myself, not what anyone else likes and dislikes :) I stand by my opinion of American football but this is not the place for it.
Bingo. My two fave sports to watch are figure skating and rugby, which tends to confuse a lot of people. But I figure that's their problem, not mine. Like what you like. Life is short enough.
Rugby, though, is great! Also a fan of soccer (what the rest of the world calls football). Absolutely did not interpret this or any other replies as a dig. Like you said, like what you like, dislike what you dislike.

I know it was on USA Network, but I myself watched it on the raw footage. I'm not sure you can watch a replay of the USA Network stream.
The USA Network stream is not archived, but they're going to a show a replay tonight on the NBC Primetime stream which will be archived. The broadcast stream has commentary, but it also comes with an actual useful tech box (instead of the useless wordle box)

except that Piper and Paul finished 6th and are not in the final flight of 5 teams...

Here to address one comment I see often... "IAM = boring, all the same choreos,,, etc more teams should go elsewhere etc"

Here is my take on this... I watched the top 8 again... 4 teams come from IAM 4 teams elsewhere.

My favourite compositions for the rhythm dance are probably PC HD FBS and SB. 3 teams from IAM

My least favourite compositions are CB (they have an amazing FD though) Piper and Paul (I like their Elton John but I feel that another vehicle may have helped them remain closer to the podium, especially at the Olympics, with such a panel) SK (no matter how well they skate, they have my least favourite two dances combo from any teams in the top 10) and GF (there is nothing Michael Jackson like in this program.. they skate it super well but it's not street dance)

So only 1 IAM team from the top 8 has a not successful RD, while 3 are not great IMHO. We could extend this to the top 10, with two more teams from IAM or if you prefer top 13 with another 3 teams from IAM,

In many years of ice dance watching, though I dislike the theme and pattern chosen this year with great passion, it has been a very diverse and entertaining event. I think IAM deserves more credit to what they do for the sport.

Will it be even better with other schools getting open elsewhere : yes. But let's give credit where it's due. Marie-France, Patrice and Romain are killing it, and it's normal that there is a IAM style to it... there is nothing wrong with that. In the 90s, there was a clear Russian balletic/dramatic style to ice dance. It was very beautiful to watch. It was however even more homogeneous than IAM... I would like to see more "ballroom/latin" intensity (not possible in this RD) because I personally find the "sportive" qualities easier to note, with the high intensity of a jive, quickstep or a samba etc.. (and I guess that's why I love the parrots) but IAM is doing very well.

End of long post ;) YMMV

I love rugby 7 ... but i watch so many sports that I guess i am not a reference. I do not watch much american football... i like soccer better.

Where? You're so fortunate. On CBC we have this extremely tiresome Aussie woman. Have restored to muting on replays LOL
What? She is fantastic. The Aussie commentator at the summer Olympics for track and field was equally fantastic. Very knowledgeable, offer helpful insights (she's one of the FIRST commentators I've heard connect the importance of different parts of the blade, knee action, edges, and posture/position over the blade), and she actually references things like (eg) the size of a team's pattern, ice coverage, changes of direction, 'watch the rocker', brackets, etc. I'd rather have that than the bombast of Jonny Weir or (in the past) the ubiquitous squeals of Scott Hamilton ("It's a BEAUTY" (as skater steps out of underrotated jump...)).

Although I have to say that Tessa and Scott have great potential. I didn't hear much of their commentary (they use the Aussie lady on CBC replays) but they are both extremely articulate, and provide insights that only experts like them can offer.

Anyhoo, I prefer the Aussie lady and Voirs to any of the commentators at the recent Canadian nationals, who gushed with superlatives at just anything that wasn't a fall...
