I guess I don't fully understand this. He will not be coaching? He will be managing an ice rink? Oh well as long as everyone is happy. I did enjoy seeing Chris on the sidelines.

^^ Chris can still coach as head of the rink. During the podcast, Chris mentioned that he will be working on further developing a pairs program at the rink.

It sounds like both Chris and Alexa are so looking forward to their next chapter, after reaching long dreamed of goals together in skating. They went to the Olympics together in 2018. Then Chris helped coach Alexa & Brandon to a 5th place finish at the 2022 Olympics, and to a 2022 World championship gold medal! :cheer:

Congratulations to the new team and all the best for a bright future!!
PBS in my area just re-ran the documentary Human: The World Within “Sense”, the very first 11 minutes of which is devoted to the sensory dynamics of pairs skating featuring Tarah Kane and Danny O’Shea..
It was lovely to revisit their skating in such a close up, personal way from a scientific perspective.
The entire series is available on most PBS channels. Sadly, I could not find that segment to post here

I actually was just thinking about Danny the other day! I was watching the Japanese team at Skate Canada and thinking that one of the things that sets them apart from the pairs field are their lovely soft-kneed skating skills, and that pairs skaters often are a bit clunky skills-wise. The exception— Mr Danny O’Shea—immediately came to mind.

Welcome back, Danny, we’ve missed you!

So, a bit of a change of subject here, hope it's not too jarring ... away from Ellie and Danny, Danny's smile ... 😍

Skate America last week was the first time I liked Maria Mokhova and Ivan Mokhov! I felt like they have somehow smoothed out their skating together since last season, gotten more refinement, somehow crossed an important threshold. Maybe it's a simple effect of maturing, both as teen-agers and as skaters becoming 'one.' Whatever change happened, I like it. Or maybe it's just that I only just now perceived them a different way.

And also .... Ta da! When I watched, I hadn't looked to see what music they were skating their FS to, but I was thrilled to recognize some moves from one of Gordeeva & Grinkov's free skates. It was then that I recognized the music also: Die Fledermaus. And that was G&G's music as well, from the 1989 World championships. Here's G&G's FS: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JSSfZlJNkGE

I can't find Maria & Ivan's SA skate (maybe someone more skilled can?) ... but I found this video of it from a few months ago in Milwaukee. I'm honestly thrilled with it,❤️ and thrilled with this team. a few lovely steps forward!

I just hope they get 3 international assignments so they can get a bye to Nationals. We need more pairs, not fewer at Nationals.

I don’t think there are 3 Internationals left for them to even be assigned for a bye to Nationals. My guess is that USFS will allow them to go to the Pairs final in a few weeks and if they place well enough, get to go to Nationals. I have no insider knowledge but since they say they are competing this season, I would assume this is how. Being close to USFS headquarters, I’m sure there being monitored. I believe she competed at a NQS with Ian Meyh this summer, but I could be misremembering. Just looked it up, she did compete at a NQS with Ian, scoring a 137. The one thing about this partnership that I’m sure is going to raise eyebrows is that she is quite young (I’m not sure exactly how old, but I want to say 16 ish) and Danny is obviously significantly older then that. The pairing kind of reminds me of the Rockne/Mary Beth Marley pairing, taking a young, talented skater and putting her with an established pairs partner. We do need some US Pairs, so I’m glad to hear about another pairing (though i was secretly hoping that Danny and Ashley Cain would pair up). Either way, good luck to them!

Ellie was born in December, 2004, and will be 18.

I'm still not a huge fan of the age difference (and no, I'm not a fan with other pairs with 10 plus years age difference either) but I am happy to see Danny back competing, and trust that they can work with that. Ellie must know that Danny will probably not be skating for her entire career (assuming she stays).

Given the scarcity of pairs, they may well get a bye to Nats.

Ok, so she’s a bit older then I thought, so it’s a 13 almost 14 year age difference. I don’t typically mind these pairings as long as the program material is appropriate for the age difference. I do worry about her getting thrown into the spotlight, being with a high profile partner can be stressful. I am Hopeful that she has a strong support system. And I agree, I’m sure she knows that she Will most Likely need another partner during her career. It is a great opportunity to learn from one of the best, Danny was always one of my favorites! I am excited to see them skate!

In the podcast, it's cool how Alexa mentions her admiration for Brandon's fierce competitiveness, which echoes her own. But Alexa admits she was annoyed by experiencing that quality in Brandon when she & Chris used to compete against him and Haven. LOL!

That comment by Alexa seems a bit odd to me. It's a competition; of course the other competitors want to win and that means each team wants to beat every other team. Being annoyed by someone else's desire to win and defeat you? :scratch2: That's what every athlete should have a desire to perform at their best.

No doubt US will find a way to make this happen, though it is an odd circumstance. Ellie had to enter the NQS with Ian, and then change partners, which is allowed. The rules require that happen by date "X" (I think that is still 9/1), AND they should have had to compete in NQS to qualify for the Pairs Final & Nationals, which they obviously did not do. Exception being listed Byes, which they do not have as a new team, unless they do 3 internationals. Even then, I can only assume they were added to the ISP based solely on monitoring, and that is a benefit they would have because it is Danny. Other teams have to compete, and meet certain scores - although that was lower overall this year too due to the low number of teams. I know that last year he and Liu also did not qualify through the NQS, did not have a bye because they did not have the internationals, but were told they could compete at Nationals. Of course, that ended up being irrelevant because of that horrific fall, but USFS does make an effort to support Danny. US certainly needs the teams and they look very happy, so here's hoping it works out better than last time!

i think you're misunderstanding the context of what she said. they were direct competitors trying to outdo each other, and having a competitor with that grit makes it harder for you to stay on top. i imagine she meant this in a well meaning and not negative way.
