I also don't want people to be original just for the sake of being "original". But the programs I mentioned are very good to excellent ones in my opinion. If I think of more or less original choices a lot of great choreo and skating comes to mind. I think more often than not the more original choices are those where people are really interested in their music und choreo, sometimes they were involved in the choreo a lot, or they skate to something they personally connect with and it shows.
I don't get the feeling that warhorses get picked so much because so many skaters enjoy songs like Roxanne so much, but because they are so busy getting their elements right they don't have the interest to look for more original music that fits for ages - and their coaches and choreographers don't see the necessity either - and secondly because they are afraid judges won't like their other choices.
It's not just the music - 80% of these warhorse programs look generic in every way and I don't think that's the goal of a good fs program.
And while I absolutely appreciate a pianist who interpretes Beethoven amazingly, I am not the kind of person to go to some okay-done Beethoven concert for the 130st time, I'd rather go to a small club and discover some new band.
The trend is clearly still to go for very common choices, we are far from everyone desperately trying to be original, so I'm not fearing that.
You say you dislike 90% of the music they pick... for me it's just the other way around, I like a huge amount of music that gets picked for skating. Classical, pop, rock, RnB, folklore, dance... it's all fine for me. There are some choices like John Mayer or the toned down jazzy lounge versions of pop songs which I don't like, but they are rare in comparison. It's amazing actually how good these songs are that they cannot be destroyed no matter what. I just want some variety, most of all because I think that not picking something that's special to you is a wasted chance.
