:) if everyone were original, we wouldn't notice their originality anymore. I am not a skater... but in my field what matters is that you perform the music you enjoy or that you value what it will teach you. That's the reason why so many pianists play the same few Beethoven sonatas when there are 32 to select from... If a skater is going to work on a program for a full season, sometimes two, they better enjoy it. I dislike 90% of the music selected by skaters... still, I can appreciate their program if they skate it well and with enthusiasm just like I will appreciate listening to a young pianist playing Moonlight Sonata, when done well and with enthusiasm.
The real issue for me is exactly when people try to be original and select music that just won't work.

I also don't want people to be original just for the sake of being "original". But the programs I mentioned are very good to excellent ones in my opinion. If I think of more or less original choices a lot of great choreo and skating comes to mind. I think more often than not the more original choices are those where people are really interested in their music und choreo, sometimes they were involved in the choreo a lot, or they skate to something they personally connect with and it shows.
I don't get the feeling that warhorses get picked so much because so many skaters enjoy songs like Roxanne so much, but because they are so busy getting their elements right they don't have the interest to look for more original music that fits for ages - and their coaches and choreographers don't see the necessity either - and secondly because they are afraid judges won't like their other choices.
It's not just the music - 80% of these warhorse programs look generic in every way and I don't think that's the goal of a good fs program.
And while I absolutely appreciate a pianist who interpretes Beethoven amazingly, I am not the kind of person to go to some okay-done Beethoven concert for the 130st time, I'd rather go to a small club and discover some new band.

The trend is clearly still to go for very common choices, we are far from everyone desperately trying to be original, so I'm not fearing that.

You say you dislike 90% of the music they pick... for me it's just the other way around, I like a huge amount of music that gets picked for skating. Classical, pop, rock, RnB, folklore, dance... it's all fine for me. There are some choices like John Mayer or the toned down jazzy lounge versions of pop songs which I don't like, but they are rare in comparison. It's amazing actually how good these songs are that they cannot be destroyed no matter what. I just want some variety, most of all because I think that not picking something that's special to you is a wasted chance.

Her Control Album from 1986 had some of her best and most recognizable charted songs. "Control", "What Have you Done for Me Lately?", "Pleasure Principle", "Nasty", "Let's Wait Awhile", "When I think of you."

My aunt once gifted me the CD... I absolutely loved it.

And Elektra, I can't find your post, I wanted to say I absolutely love love Joan Jett as well!!

i think you have many good points. i will focus on the last bit...

i am not sure that every skater really has deep musical knowledge/connection, especially early on. So, skaters trust their team for these choices, just like my students trust me when I choose their next Beethoven sonata :) Skaters who are older/with more musical background evolve often from warhorses to a more personal style. We should not expect skaters to be artists first and athletes second. Another example : i have some students who are emerging composers. My task is to teach them the standard repertoire first so they are aware of a wide range of musical languages...knowing the basics informs them on what is then original and makes them better composers down the road.

I love this team. I hope they have a fun, productive season, after all they've been dealing with re injuries and worry over their families and their Ukrainian homeland. Their fp to Beneath You Beautiful, by Labrinth, will be as interesting to see as their very different genre choice for their sp.

I sense from S/S more of a brother/ sister vibe, rather than hot chemistry, so I'm intrigued by their bold 'Earned It' music choice. I don't think any team can top the iconic original by J/C, which earned them their first Euros medal (and much admiration and emulation). I believe J/C's program was choreographed by John Kerr, with input from Jeremy Barrett and Silvia Fontana.

I can't wait to see the costumes.
Go to their Instagrams, or to OnIcePerspectives clips on Instagram to see a short preview. The concept/ choreo is looking very good. I hope their tech consistency on jump elements has improved. I've always enjoyed watching Danny from the early years of his partnership with Nica Digerness.

Did anyone see this fun preview on OIP of Lajoie/Lagha's Thriller?

We are so easily pleased, aren’t we :)

All it takes is one inspired musical choice and now, we are ready for the new season!

PS I see from Instagram that none other than Lewis Gibson is also liking this choice

Given what everyone has said, I am very pleasantly surprised by the love for Disco Inferno (and Backstreet Boys).

I am too old for the BSB, but the Trammps? Disco Inferno? As mainstream and as uncool and as unhip back in the day as Michael Jackson and Madonna. In fact, I would argue MJ and Madonna were "cooler".

But Nikita, you have made Auntie El happy by loving on her music. 🎶
