2023-24 Retirements, Splits and New Partnerships

Well, with the state of world pair skating at present, they can easily be in top ten. Without Chinese and Russians, who needs to worry about triples.
In juniors maybe, but that's always been the case (Smirnova/Siianytsia were tenth in 2020 with double sbs jumps, an inconsistent triple throw and a double throw). In seniors? Definitely not.

Not to speak of the fact that Jazmine is not the only person with jump issues here, Kieran is not a strong or consistent jumper either (due to the fact that he switched to figure skating so late).

Additionally, we are seeing a bit of a renaissance of pairs skating in juniors, there are a lot of new and promising junior teams who are showing triple throws and triple sbs jumps in training. How consistent they'll be in competition, we'll have to wait and see.
Jazmine and Kieran are also up against considerable internal competition, as Canada only has two spots for Jr Worlds this season. Right now, I'd say those will most likely be going to Ariano Kent/Laliberté-Laurent and Kemp/Elizarov, at least if they keep the level they've shown and the other teams don't improve massively.

This does not mean they don't have the potential to improve, Jazmine already has made massive strides when compared to her former partnership, but just to say that it's not going to be as easy as you think.

Correct me if there is evidence to the contrary, but I wouldn't be surprised if Kieran can actually do triples. Ok, his 2A doesn't look pretty, but afaik he rotates and lands every time. I know triples are a lot harder than 2A for many skaters, but it wouldn't surprise me.

I have no idea if Kieran can do triples, but I'm sure everyone under Bruno Marcotte is at least training them, with varying rates of success.

Kieran does usually fully rotate his 2A, but he doesn't always land it. In fact, he was the one who fell on the 2A in the Free at the Next Gen Comp, not Jazmine (who did a nice 2A+1A+1A in the Free, and an underrotated, but landed 2A in the Short).
Both he and Chloe fell on the 2A in the Short at JGP Ostrava last season, and he had a few issues with the 2A in the SP at the JGPF.

His 2A is way more consistent than Chloe's, no doubt about that, but we don't know much about Jazmine's consistency yet, considering we've really effectively seen her do a 2A a maximum of four times in competition (with her old partner and here at Next Gen).

I will especially miss Tiffany’s trademark hair and the handsome Jonathan.
I am appalled at the responses from their countrymen on Facebook - way to eat your own.
Shame - they were excellent representatives for their country. Many others would’ve loved to have had them.
Yes it is, but also before they announced their retirement Tiffany had quite a few nasty comments posted on her social media due to her and Jonathan representing Russia.

Well, he does look excited..

Sports pair Ekaterina Petushkova and Evgeny Malikov (Russia) retired. The reason was anthropometric changes in both and Ekaterina's injuries. At the moment, both athletes focused on their studies. They didn't look for new partners. This was announced by their coach Tamara Moskvina.

They didn't look for new partners.
Moskvina stated just opposite, that they had been looking for a while but couldn't find a tall guy for Ekaterina and a tiny girl for Evgeny, with appropriate skills of course.

Daria Usacheva has left team Tutberidze and is rumored to be retiring.
I actually thought she was doing better now, because there were recent clips of her doing jumping passes like 3Lz-Eu-3S. It looked really good, so I thought things was looking up for her after the injury. Or maybe I actually saw an old clip and thought it was new?

Well of course, clips don´t tell the whole story, and maybe it wasn´t without pain. Perhaps her injury still doesn´t allow her to train as intensive as the training regime at TT requires, or they don´t want to take the risk off her getting injured again. What a real shame. If she actually is able to jump and train again pretty normal without pain, it´s such a pity if she has to retire because she might not do quads or 3A. If she feels good about skating, I would hope another coach would take her and let her shine. Daria skates so beautiful, and her jumps without the ultra C is more than enough for me.

That's right, I meant to say that they are no longer looking for partners at this moment.

Daria doesn't comment on the situation, preparing to practice at training camps as a coach. With a very high probability it is retirement.

Sophia (Sonia) Baram/Daniel Tioumentsev (USA, pairs) have split. Sofia is searching for a new partner, and continues training in singles, while it seems like Daniel might retire (he's going to University in Arizona and working at SpaceX).

Update: Daniel is "stepping away from skating for a bit", but is not announcing his official retirement.

I just watched JGP lists and noticed a new Finnish Id pair in juniors: Cilla Laine/Urho Reina. I have no idea about who Cilla is but I found out she has skated in singles at novice level a couple of years ago and she is a Finn - Cilla is quite rare name but Laine is common Finnish surname. Urho Reina skated with Hilda Taylor before.

Edit, I found also this pair from the same list: Hilda TAYLOR / Nolen HICKEY (FIN). Interesting she/they continue in Finns, I think somebody told she will switch to some other country (was it Canada?) Anyway, I think I saw her with Urho (about him I am sureit was he) at some competition live last season and heard she speaks fluent Finnish, so she has been in Finland for a while.

Lori-Ann Matte/Noël-Antoine Pierre are a new pairs team:

It seems like they have not yet decided on which country - Canada or France - they will represent.

I am just so happy for Lori-Ann who seems to have recovered fully from her injury. Wish them both all the best. I ma guessing France might be an easier field and perhaps also easier for eligibility??? But I am also guessing they will train in Canada...
