Ideas for Davis & White

If they haven't drawn you in yet, check out their exhibitions, particularly Somewhere Beyond the Sea.:clap:

I agree that they certainly have that "it" factor. They are head and shoulders above the other american dance teams in terms of speed and twizzles and lifts. I hope that they get the National title next year... they were under-marked this past time.

You know, their exhibitions are really excellent. They don't just get out there and shake their booties around, they ice dance. The two ones in particular I could recommend are "The Nutcracker" and as dorispulaski recommended, "Beyond the Sea". Both are wonderful with so much beautiful skating and a romantic flowing style that's so satisfying to watch.

oh my god, there's a nutcracker one? could I see it please?

More Davis and White Exhibitions

2006 World Jr Championships, D&W, Ray Charles Medley

There is also an exhibition version of Polovetsian dances from 2006 at Stars, Stripes and Skates.

I love them most as exhibition skaters. They slow down a bit and relate to each other more. And Meryl's arm movements are particularly nice.

Thanks, doris, for the link for the Ray Charles Medley. Weren't they so good? It was fun seeing them in their last year as Juniors...wow, as terrific as they were there at Jr Worlds, I really am amazed at how much they improved in their first year as Seniors. Their transitions and holds and just their overall smoothness with each other improved a lot from 2006 to 2007.

I love them, too, as exhibition skaters. You're right, they really relate so beautifully and just look like they are so enjoying themselves.

I've also seen a video of their CD from 07 Skate America (Austrian Waltz). Nancy Kerrigan was commentating, she commented on their relating to one another, she said they looked at each other while skating the dance while a lot of the other couples were projecting outward. I agree, it was a lovely dance. They were undermarked there, too.

I don't know, as much as I love their speed and power, I also think they skate well to flowing, romantic music. It really is difficult to decide exactly what I would want to see them skate to this coming season!

I was at Skate America, and also thought they were really slammed on the Austrian. I felt they were significantly better with it than both F&S and P&B there.

I didn't know the CD's were telecast.

Here's the exhibition version of their 2007 FD-I love the way they perform it here:

Thanks for posting that, doris. Yeah, I saw the CD from icenetwork.com. I really couldn't believe how undermarked they were. I don't think the judges were even paying attention!

Anyway, it was fun to see that performance of Pol Dances. You could tell it was brand new to them especially after seeing their later performances. They missed the part where Meryl slid between his legs, didn't they? But it was still amazing and I'm so impressed with how they stepped up their difficulty from 2006 to 2007.

And Meryl was very balletic, she seems to be looser in her exhibitions, she must get nerves a little when competing! I love her style, she seems so feminine and lovely especially against Charlie's athleticism and strong masculine presence on the ice. They just fit together so perfectly to me.

Ooh thanks for posting that Doris! I'd never seen that before; I really enjoyed it. It's amazing to see how much their PD transformed. Obviously some spots were rough, but man! I loved their expression, Meryl seemed so free in that. I actually focused more on her than Charlie in that performance. It also seems to me that their posture and unison was better there, and last season for the most part. But I credit that to them focusing more on expression and relating this season, so I expect them to be back in top form this next season...keeping my fingers crossed for a summer of no injuries!
Also, it probably wouldn't hurt to take some ballet classes; I don't know, but this past season they were just missing some grace that I saw before. But again, Charlie's injury. It was there more again by the end of the season IMO. Oh and another thing (haha), Meryl's more flexible than I thought. They should use that in their lifts this next season.

Question: does anyone do where I could find the exhibition version of their Tango OD? I'd heard they did performed one at the 2007 Marshall's Showcase but I can't seem to find the video...so maybe they didn't do it?

No, I don't think the Tango OD exhibition at Marshalls 2007 was televised. They only showed the Beyond the Sea program.

Thanks for the youtube link to the Stars and Stripes exhibition. I love that little whew goofy smile she gives him at the end with her hair all in her face- it's like she's saying-- we obviously need to work more on that program. She looks so cute. I hope in the future that they find a way to show that fun, natural side of Meryl in a program. She can pull off drama and cool remove but it's nice to know she can have fun too.

:)

I knew from the moment I saw how that Austrian was graded that this year was going to turn my stomach. Fraser & Lukanin over Davis & White by a point, nearly ??? At the time, I assumed they had a misstep, but after going over to icenetwork and watching the CD, I didn't see any misstep.

Tanith BELBIN / Benjamin AGOSTO 36.03
Nathalie PECHALAT / Fabian BOURZAT 34.56
Federica FAIELLA / Massimo SCALI 31.43
Kristin FRASER / Igor LUKANIN 31.19
Meryl DAVIS / Charlie WHITE 30.16

That's before we get to P&B, some of the noisiest skaters on the blade I had heard in a long time, & F&S who had definitely improved but not that much.

And then B&A only about 1.5 ahead of P&B, despite being in another league entirely. In fact, B&A doing a waltz that felt like a waltz (previously their waltzes were soso) with much better leg extension than they had had in the past, quiet on the blade?

I was in a thousand depressions, and that is in fact the way the year went.

Count me as a fan of their "Nutcracker" exhibition program as well!:rock:
I particularly love the 2006 NHK version. I think the light, costumes, music and choreography matched so perfectly. They were just like two fairies who jumped right out of a fairy tale, and danced so beautifully in the scene...You know, such an exhibition may not catch as much attention as the hot, entertaining ones do, but it definetly has a unique pure quality and personality that stands out from the others. This is the same way as what I feel about Meryl and Charlie themselves. They're young, fresh and adorable. They may not have fully developed as artists on ice yet, but have a unique look and style that no one else can be the same.

The fact that they're good-waltzers makes me think of the "Sentimental waltz" from "My sweet and tender beast". I know many have skated to this piece of music, but I still think Meryl and Charlie can express the light, softness, emotion and drama pretty well. I always love Marina and Gwendal's OD to it back in 1999, but it was an OD version, only 2:30 minutes long. If the music cut was an extended one for FD, it could have more contents.

Now, you know Igor has a history with this particular piece of music...Silverstein and Pekarak skated a lovely dance to this back when they competed together. I could totally see Meryl and Charlie doing a great job with this one. Might be overused and perhaps not good for competition but it would make a great exhibition program for them.

I'm glad to know others appreciate the beautiful exhibitions, not just the "sexy back" type ones. Sometimes I just feel embarrassed for the skaters even if they don't!

Off topic I suppose-does anyone know when we can expect to know what the skaters are doing for programs next year? I know it would probably be too soon to expect for a month or so, but...yeah...lol

I don't know whether this would work for Meryl & Charlie, but I'd like to see a Janis Joplin FD--(also might work for K&N) using Piece of My Heart & perhaps Bobby McGee with it to fill out the 4 minutes.

I saw a youtube of Ina & Zimmerman skating to Piece of My Heart and it worked quite well for skating, I thought.

It can't be too soon for me! I'm so anticipating it...

franzlfan, I asked over at FSU on the D/W thread what folks would think about "My Sweet and Tender Beast"...two negative replies so far. One commenter didn't think Meryl and Charlie are suited for it...that posture, line, toe point and extension are not their strong points. While I agree that it's not their STRONG points, I still think they will improve with that as they mature and maybe skating to music like this would help. I don't know...
