Does the state you live in make a difference?

Yes, it takes an act of Congress but it really helps to have an advocate in each house.

I remember Senator Carl Levin of Michigan helping Tanith Belbin (just in time, like end of December I think), on the grounds of exceptional talent. She had an advocate in the House too, also from Michigan.

I would be surprised if the USA could attain 3 spots at the upcoming World Championships in the pairs discipline. I hate to think how the other more talented teams in the world would have to absolutely bomb to allow that to happen. I suppose without Russia there may be a slim chance it could happen, but the Americans would have to be flawless and hope for others to make mistakes.

Placements of six and seven would do it. That's not out of the realm of possibility. As you say, no Russians will be there, so placements go up by three, at least theoretically. Add in home ice? Not probable, but not slim either.

Of course, American pairs don't generally have an outstanding track record at Worlds, give or take a few exceptions.

Tanith and Ben were reigning world silver medalists though heading into the 2006 OG. It would take a billion guardian angels and an absolute miracle on ice for a similar result to happen for Alisa and Misha in the pairs discipline at this upcoming world championships. You’re right about the current US political climate; I don’t see them giving this team any favors.

Yes, unlikely. But not impossible. Do Danny and Ellis skate like they made the GPF, or do they skate like tonight? Can Alisa and MIsha repeat this level of performance? Will those other nine skate well? All unknowable at this point.

I'm not holding my breath, but I wouldn't fall out of my chair in shock either. Pairs is almost as unpredictable as the men.

I also don't think it's shocking. If clean the international judges would absolutely put Ellie and Danny on the podium, they do, honestly, have the best " programs" among the pairs when looking at complexity of choreo and transitions and their SS are top of the field along with the Japanese. I can't see the other American pairs placing that high but between 6-8 place would not be surprising. Easy to get 3 spots, no, but certainly not at all impossible.

Pairs : the SP is crucial. If Ellie falls on her throw or Elisa under rotates a jump they could be in the third to last group.

The Germans which is why I think they will win even though they aren't my faves. The rest of the pairs field is not consistent. So it's not likely,no, but also not close to impossible.

I also think the Germans will win. I think the Japanese and Canadians can do a great SP but not sure they both can be clean in the LP. The Italians 1.are probably just a tad more consistent than Ellie and Danny.

Will Boston be kind to us pairs? Home ice was an advantage for Deanna and Max. They skated so well and the crowd loved it. Home is not always easy on skaters tough

OMG, the comparisons of Alisa and Misha to Gordeeva and Grinkov are really absurd and I don’t see it. They really have not proven themselves worthy of comparison to such a god tier, legendary greatest pairs team of all time. It was, however, the best they have ever skated and they should be really proud of their effort here. Her jumps still give me cause for concern.

Aww, that was such a painful, unfortunate skate for Emily and Spencer; not at all indicative of how wonderfully they were skating in practice. However, I know practice is very different from competition and the nerves and coming back from injury and lack of training time really got to them. So sad!
