2025-26 Programs By Discipline

I would much rather see Jun skate to Les Mis than Black Eyes. He can be very dramatic with the right music and I think Les Mis would be perfect for him. And how refreshing to see Deanna and Maxim skate to music that doesn't involve deep breathing :rolleye:

What I'm saying is, for an elite skater like Jun and an elite choreographer like ShaeLynn, I guess I expect music that's a little more creative and not overused by other elite skaters. Just my opinion. I don't know - and you probably don't know - if Jun wanted that music....or how many skaters get a vote in the music they're skating to.

I would think a lot depends on the skater. ShaeLynn choreographs for Ilia Malinin, and I think he chose both Running and Not a Vampire last season. Now whether SLB presented an array of options or helped him choose the best for him... I don't know that.

I've heard various tales of the interactions between athlete and choreographer, and they range from the choreographer being in charge of everything to the athlete saying, "I want to skate to this. Make me a program to it." My gut tells me the truth is somewhere in between in most cases.

I remember from a PJ Kwong interview with Shae Lynn that for her cooperation with Yuzuru Hanyu she sent him a list of 5 or 6 pieces to choose from, and in response he sent her "Seimei" with a message: "This is what I want to skate to" . :)
And Seimei it was, as we all know.
Similarly, David Wilson confided it was Yuzuru who would write him a - very polite and passionate - letter stating he wanted to skate to Romeo and Juliet, and it was before his first OGM, so clearly it was not about his star position but just about him knowing what he wanted, even as a teen. OTOH, Parisienne Walkways and Chopin were offered to him and he just accepted. So I guess, it varies even with the same skater. I guess, whichever way, if the skater really dislikes the music, they can say "no" (at least when they are not juniors any more in which case I think artistic freedom is much more limited). With elite skaters, in most cases I'd expect they have at least a say in it.

And how refreshing to see Deanna and Maxim skate to music that doesn't involve deep breathing :rolleye:
You know, this SP will remain iconic whether some people liked Oxygène or not.. The song itself was a huge hit in Québec and remains extremely popular. The artist, Diane Dufresne, has received many awards. It was a perfect choice for home worlds in Montreal.
We all have our musical taste and that's fine, and I am the first one to complain when a skater goes for Roxxxxxxxxxannnnnnne (looking at you Jun!) but at the same time, I believe that sometimes understanding the context and cultural value of the song may help.

Here are the accolades Diane Dufresne won in her long, esteemed and revered career.
The Félix is the Québec equivalent to Grammy award.
Note that Dufresne not only received awards in Québec and Canada, but is also a recipient of France's Légion d'honneur.
Just thought I would drop this here simply because though some people do not like this song, they went for something different and the entire crowd in Montreal was breathing with it. That SP was in my opinion the biggest moment of Montreal worlds for fans. We went crazy for it as it was so intense and their performance was electrifying.
