Zarah Wood & Alex Lapsky

Combined Technical Elements Score. A minimum of 63 is needed for pairs for Junior Worlds. Combines the best SP TES and the best FP programme one. Zarah and Alex had been around 6-7 points short before this competition.

Ah, so it's the TES Minimums. Hadn't come across that term before.

Yep, they now have the Minimums. I had commented in the competition thread about Zarah crying with joy, and @Jumping_Bean replied:

She's crying because they achieved Jr Worlds minimums - You can hear her asking their coach if they had done it after he showed her the live scoring in the Sportity App and she started to really cry after the judging finished up a little while later.

Chris was such a proud coach and stepfather. It's just a pity that Zoe wasn't there as well (well, somebody had to remain at home with the rest of the children). She would have been in floods of tears too!

I'm just so happy for them.

Zarah and Alex finished 1st out of 4 in the FS, with a score of 81.03. This meant that they remained in 1st position overall, with a score of 128.29.

I was concentrating on catching up on the overnight MotoGP races on Sunday morning, so I only popped in to watch the programme itself LIVE. With the camera angle that was being used during the Warm-Up, it wasn't worth popping in for it.

Here is what I wrote about them in the competition thread when they were being introduced:

And here is what I wrote about them after they did their programme:

@Jumping_Bean replied to my bit about Zarah crying with joy with:

To which I replied:

Zarah and Alex finished the Free Skate 5.51 points ahead of 2nd position, Alžběta KVÍDEROVÁ / Jindřich KLEMENT (CZE), and 10.95 points ahead of 3rd position, Wiktoria PACHA / Szymon DERECHOWSKI (POL).

Zarah and Alex are also 18.20 points ahead of the remaining partnership, Johanka ŽILKOVÁ / Matyas Rafael BECERRA (CZE) in 4th position.

Overall, Zarah and Alex were 15.86 points ahead of 2nd position, Kvíderová / Klement, and 21.55 points ahead of 3rd position, Pacha / Derechowski.

Zarah and Alex are also 25.86 points ahead of the remaining partnership, Žilková / Becerra in 4th position.

What can I say? Although there were mistakes, they just dominated both segments.

I don't normally start to think about TES minimums until after the New Year, but I am absolutely delighted that they have got the minimums for Junior Worlds ticked off already. That is one less thing for them to worry about. And they can now concentrate completely on just trying to do the best that they can on the ice.

Zarah and Alex are currently 1.23 points behind 3rd position, Zoë Madison PFLAUM / Linus MAGER (CHE), and 1.87 points ahead of 5th position, Aliyah ACKERMANN / Tobija HARMS (DEU).

2.37 points further ahead of Pflaum / Mager are Chiara Michaela PAZIENZA / Maxim KNORR (CHE) in 2nd position, 3.60 points ahead of Zarah and Alex.

Although they are currently in penultimate position, Zarah and Alex are actually in a very good position. They are in with a shot of the Bronze Medal, or even the Silver Medal.

So, let's hope that they have a good Free Skate!

I was concentrating on watching the Tallinn Trophy this week, but was fortunate that the start of the Junior Pairs FS started around the time of the interval between the Junior Free Dance and the Senior Free Dance. So, I was able to watch both the Group 1 Warm-Up and Zarah and Aelx's programme.

In terms of other members, my good friend in Sicily, @elektra blue, also commented when they were being introduced (it is well known that spelling is not her forté, so please forgive her mangling of Zoe's name):

The next comment came from @Seven Sisters:

Now that's an idea. Yes, Zoe would be a great candidate for an honour, for everything she has done for the sport. She certainly deserves an honour more than a lot of the muppets that get them!

Our resident video archive list compiler, @labgoat, was full of compliments:

Funny you should say that - between Singles and Pairs, Alex competed in Ice Dance for a couple of seasons with Sophia Bushell.

@Seven Sisters then replied to @labgoat's comment with this:

It was indeed!

Looking at the Protocols, I was disappointed to see that only two elements got positive GOE. That was the Throw Triple Salchow, which got +0.57; and the Step Sequence, which got +0.19.

Having managed to spot it myself, it came as no surprise that the Triple Twist was the biggest issue. It got the biggest GOE hit at -1.82; and in terms of Judges marks it got -5 from Judge 5; -4 from five Judges; -3 from Judge 4; and -2 from two Judges. Again, it was no surprise that the Change Foot Combination Spin that they finished with had the second biggest GOE hit, at -0.43. It got -3 from Judge 7; -2 from three Judges; and -1 from the remaining five Judges.

However, I was surprised to see that the Group 4 Lift had the third biggest GOE hit, at -0.37. I actually thought it went well. The Judges had mixed feelings, with the first five Judges giving it 0; and the last four Judges giving it -2. This strange tidyness and contrast makes me wonder if how they perceived it was due to where they were sitting, and the angle they were seeing it from.

Zarah and Alex are currently 1.96 points behind 18th position, Debora Anna COHEN / Lukas VOCHOZKA (CZE), and 3.00 points ahead of Lily WILBERFORCE / Mozes Jozsef BEREI (HUN). Zarah and Alex are the bttom partnership in a group of 12 partnerships covered by 7.79 points, stretching up to Olivia FLORES / Luke WANG (USA) in 8th position.

Unfortunately, Junior Worlds has a cut off where only 16 Pars partnerships go through to the Free Skate segment. Zarah and Alex were 2.72 points behind the last partnership to qualify, Laura HEČKOVÁ & Alex VÁLKY (SVK).

Of course, it is disappointing that they did not get through to the Free Skate. Especially since they missed out by a small margin. But, it is a delight that they skated so well.

No doubt about it, they have improved so much during this season as they have got more experience. And f they continue to come on at the rate that they are, I have no doubt that they will make the cut next season.

:cheer: WELL DONE!!! :cheer:

Zarah and Alex did the 3Tw for the first time in a competition. They have a new ISU PB. All of their elements were called, even though a lot had slightly negative GOE. Earlier in the season they were having problems getting the death spiral called and were being given an invalid element.

Zarah and Alex finished 3rd out of 4 in the SP, with a score of 40.24.

Here is what I wrote about their programme in the competition thread:

Looking at the Protocols, it didn't go quite as well as I had thought. There were actually only two elements that had any positive numbers numbers beside them, the Throw Double Flip and the Step Sequence. The Change Foot Combination Spin near the end was invalidated; the Triple Twist Lift at the start was completely negative; the Double Axel that followed was completely neutral; and the remaining elements were a mixture of negative and neutral numbers.

Although I had commented about them running out of space after doing the Triple Twist Lift, I wasn't expecting it to be quite as costly as it was. It had the biggest GOE hit of the programme, at -1.76. It also got -5 from Judge 2; -4 from two Judges; and -3 from two Judges.

The other two elements with negative numbers had GOE of -0.58 (the Roller Lift) and -0.47 (the Backwards Inside Death Spiral). The elements with positive numbers had GOE of +0.20 (the Throw Double Flip) and +0.26 (the Step Sequence).

Zarah and Alex are currently 0.71 points behind 2nd position, Rebecca RITCHIE / Kyle McLEOD (GBR), and 4.00 points ahead of Juliet MEEK / Devin MEEK (USA). Zarah and Alex are the bottom partnership in a group of 3 partnerships covered by 2.63 points, stretching up to Milada KOVÁŘ / Jared McPIKE (USA) in 1st position.

With the way the scores are, all the podium positions are up for grabs. Any of the Top 3 partnerships could win this. So, Zarah and Alex could do with putting in a good Free Skate to boost the chances of it being them.

I can imagine Zoe's reaction if they do!

:cheer:   :party2: :points: :hb:

:cheer: WELL DONE ZARAH AND ALEX!!! :cheer:

CaroLiza_fan

Looking at the Protocols, I can understand why I thought they hadn't won. Zarah and Alex have a lot of negative numbers, and not that many positive numbers. Milada and Jared have a lot of positive numbers, and not that many negative numbers.

Zarah and Alex's GOE's ranged from -1.65 for the Roller Lift; to +0.67 for both the Throw Triple Loop and the Choreographic Sequence. There were four elements with negative GOE. One of them, the Double Axel-Double Axel done in sequence, was quite mild, at -0.11. But the other three were big hits.

Part of the reason they won the FS, and consequently the title, is the Base Value of the programmes. Zarah and Alex had the highest value FS programme of the field. Even with more costly negative GOE's, they were still able to get a higher Technical Elements Score for their programme than the other partnerships.

The other part of the reason is that their Programme Component Score was considerably more than everybody else's. Every Judge gave them a score of over 5 for every single component. The other partnerships only had the odd score of over 5 here and there.

Zarah and Alex finished the Free Skate 5.66 points ahead of 2nd position, Milada KOVÁŘ / Jared McPIKE (USA), and 8.66 points ahead of 3rd position, Juliet MEEK / Devin MEEK (USA).

Zarah and Alex are also 17.75 points ahead of the remaining partnership, Rebecca RITCHIE / Kyle McLEOD (GBR) in 4th position.

Overall, Zarah and Alex were 3.03 points ahead of 2nd position, Kovář / McPike, and 12.66 points ahead of 3rd position, the Meeks.

Zarah and Alex are also 17.04 points ahead of the remaining partnership, Ritchie / McLeod in 4th position.

I have to be honest, this win totally took me by surprise. I genuinely thought that the two partnerships that skated after them had gone ahead of them. But in reality, one of them went into last position, and the other went into 2nd position.

I wonder if the prospect of Zarah's twin sister Zinia moving stright into Senior Pairs has spurred Zarah and Alex to really push on.

Whether that is the reason or not, boys but this result has set them up for the season ahead!

Here's an interview with them (from anythinggoes)

Thank you so much for linking to this interview. I would never have known about it otherwise because, due to the site's name, I always thought Anything GOE's was about analysing scoring. And as a result I never visited the site, because I know nothing about scoring! :p

Well that was a very interesting read. So insightful. They really do have their heads screwed on.

The parts where Zarah was talking about her Mum and Chris were particularly interesting. She looks up to them, but doesn't feel pressure to emulate them. That's the way it should be. And I liked the bit where she said that people comment that she skates like her Mum, but she thinks that is because it is her Mum coachng them. Well, that totally makes sense to me!

Incidentally, the Junior GP in Bangkok that they are referring to starts tomorrow. As usual, I'll post more details on the morning of their SP.

Zarah and Alex finished 11th out of 12 in the SP, with a score of 42.31.

Unfortunately, I didn't realise that this was a four day event rather than the usual three, and so I missed watching LIVE. However, I caught up on the Pairs SP the following morning. So here is the sort of comment I would have written about the Warm-Up if I had been watching LIVE:

First time we saw Zarah and Alex, she was taking off her team jacket and handing it to her Mum (Alex was already without his). And I thought "good!", because I remembered the problems I had identifying the partnerships during the Robin Cousins Cup when they were wearing their jackets.

The camera actually focussed on them just after that. They were lining up a jump, but they had to abort it and split up as another partnership came through.

When they found each other again, they circled around and had another go, but it wasn't the best. They were way out of sync. I liked the way Zarah patted Alex on the shoulder afterwards. They then circled around and treid again, and it was a bit better. Still out of sync, but not as much.

After this, the camera left them, and we saw them just going through shot a few times. Next time they were focussed on, they were heading back to the boards to talk to Zoe. But they had to make a hasty move out of the way as another partnership came through at speed. I wouldn't have thought that sort of thing would be allowed around the area where the coaches are standing!

There then seemed to be a disagreement. Zarah wanted to talk to her Mum, but Alex wanted to get back out there. Eventually, Zarah gave in and joined him. And they circled round and did a lovely throw.

At the end of the Warm-Up, we saw the tail-end of a lift, and then they went their separate ways. But then the announcer announced the end of the Warm-Up, so they found each other again, and left the ice together.

Now, they have to wait a while until they skate, as they are the last to go in this group.

Hope it goes well!

CaroLiza_fan

And here is the sort of comment I would have written about their programme:

Ooooh. Ted referred to Zoe using her first husband's surname! (Well, it was actually the plural of his surname, but this is Ted...) She's been divorced, re-married, and divorced again since those days; and has been using her maiden name for quite a few years now! :drama:

Ach, the camera went out of focus when they were just about to get out of their opening pose! Do they not realise that these arty-farty transitions mean we miss what is happening?!

Triple Twist Lift itself was good, but setting Zarah back down on the ice was a bit clumsy.

Alex's timing on Double Axel completely wrong, and he ended up down on one knee. Zarah's was good, though.

Did their signature move as part of the choreography. It was good!

Reverse Lasso Lift was beautiful.

Ah, Zarah deliberately did the splits in the corner. When they did this at the Robin Cousins Cup, I thought it was a mistake. (The camera angle of it wasn't as good as this week).

Throw Triple Flip a bit on the small side.

Backwards Inside Death Spiral good, albeit rather slow.

Combination Spins good but way out of sync.

Liked the Step Sequence and the choreography around it at the end.

Definitely better than it was in Sheffield a few weeks ago.

Eh?! Mark and Ted saying they won't be satisfied with that performance. I thought it was great!

They go into 7th position.

They are understandably disappointed. And I don't blame them. I don't understand those scores. They were far better than penultimate position. So...

:cheer: WELL DONE ZARAH AND ALEX!!! :cheer:

CaroLiza_fan

As for those that did know the schedule and were watching LIVE, the first comment came from @auser:

And then Czech member @flanker pointed out who was accompanying Zarah and Alex:

German member @Jumping_Bean was doing Play-By-Plays:

Looking at the Protocols, I think I was looking through rose-tinted glasses. There are not many positive numbers. And no positive GOE at all. The GOE ranged from -1.41 for the second element, the Double Axel; to +0.30 for the final element, the Step Sequence.

These were also the elements that got the worst and best sets of Judges marks. The Double Axel got -5 from three Judges; -4 from three Judges; and -2 from Judge 7. While the Step Sequence got -1 from Judge 5; 0 from Judge 9; +1 from four Judges; and +2 from two Judges.

Zarah and Alex are currently 0.28 points behind 10th position, Johanka ŽILKOVÁ / Matyáš Rafael BECERRA (CZE), and 4.35 points ahead of Ines MOUDDEN / Alejandro Lazaro GARCIA (ESP) in 12th position.

Well, with the way the scores are at the moment, they certainly have a chance of going up one position. But, if they put in a good Free Skate, Zarah and Alex might have a chance of infiltrating the group of 3 skaters ahead of the Czech partnership. The leaders of that group, Irina NAPOLITANO / Edoardo COMI (ITA) in 7th position, are probably out of reach, being 4.48 points ahead of Zarah and Alex. But the bottom partnership of that group, Mujun HU / Zexuan WANG (CHN) in 9th position, are a possibility, being 2.70 points ahead of Zarah and Alex.

So, let's hope they do have a good Free Skate and can move up.

:cheer: WELL DONE!!! :cheer:

@CaroLiza_fan they have had to spread it over 4 days because there isn't a separate practice rink. In previous years pairs weren't included, which meant that they just needed the standard 3 days.

Yeah, Ted and Mark explained that in the commentary. And it makes sense. It wouldn't be fair to have the skaters doing their practice at all hours of the night or in the wee small hours of the morning, and having to do their programme for real in the daytime. They wouldn't be fit to do that, and the competitions would be like a disaster movie.

I just didn't know in advance that this was the case.

Knowing Ted and Mark, they probably warned us at the end of last week's Junior GP in Varese. But I was only able to watch on the first day last week, because there was so much motorsport on over the weekend.

Totally my fault. But, it's all good. I'll be completely caught up by the time the Pairs FS starts. I watched the Pairs SP before yesterday's action started, and the first 4 groups of the Ladies SP between tea time and bedtime last night; and I am just starting to watch the last 2 groups of the Ladies SP now before I have my breakfast.
