Caught up as far as women's SP and men FS (yet to watch pairs FS - thanks Ted for disclosing the result, but at least I won't be holding my breath lol. I was gutted when Riku doubled her side by side in the SP). Kazuki, oh dear...he is such a cactus I don't know how his fans cope. Everyone seems to hate the RD music and the result is (mostly) so predictable I didn't really enjoy ice dance as much as usual. Surprised (and delighted) that Rinka is 1st in the SP - quite an achievement nailing the 3A and getting the job done afterwards when obviously Alysa is the crowd favourite. I hope she keeps it together for the free!

Two judges gave Alyssa's flip +2, and one judge gave her an entire +5.

+5 suggests to me it could barely have been better. I don't know where this came from. I almost never see +5s on women's jumps. Kaori barely gets them on her Axel.

Catching up girls SP. Few thoughts after 1st group:
I'm suprised how much I enjoyed Starr, such a good energy. She's a good match with Beyonce.
I like Florence program for Lea, if only she could put it together more often.
Wakaba's skate was so beautiful and emotional . It felt like she skated for herself and the audience. No matter the score, I cherish her so much everytime she skates this season. Her PCS is a crime (as ususal).

Second group (girls) thoughts:
Rinka ate. Axel was great, she was sharp and intense, I loved it. I like the entry to her change combo spin.
Lara was brilliant, I love this program, music is intricate, choreo is unique and she makes it her own. So many nice little touches. The only thing I dislike is cartwheel spin exit (although she does it quite well).
Hana's Kill Bill is so fun.
Alyssa brought some magic and emotions, this program is really special for her. However, I find her a bit overscored, the choreo is effective but her body movements and transitions are not much complex and it should be reflected in composition mark.
Chaeyeon looked more like herself here. I like this program for her, she's so elegant and her posture is amazing. Opposite to Alyssa, she impresses me very much with the range of body movement she uses but I wish she gave a bit more of facial expression and emotions (although I see a lot of progress in that area). She's one of very few skaters who nailed brown costume (it's a nice dark chocolade tone of brown).

I've only caught a couple pieces of the competition here and there. Dying to see some of the ice dance because I didn't know there was a Shin Amano caller in that discipline.

Just watched the Pairs FS. It's not often that I like the first group (with the lower standings after the Short) better - well, except for one pair - than the second group, but it definitely happened this morning. Have the pairs caught a bit of the menning virus?

Olivia and Luke had quite a skate. Not perfect, a bit rough around the edges, but well-done! Increasing the SB with app. 30 points is not bad. I was so pleased to see Valentina and Maximiliano again, after having lost a year to injury. They are always lovely to watch, falls and all. I have never seen Kelly Ann and Loucas skate so well, and the judges agreed it was a great skate. Small mistake, but sublime otherwise. It got them a bronze medal overall (they were second in the FS though). I was happy to see Emily and Spencer Akira skate well too. Not as good as the Canadian Pair, but still lovely - and they were 3rd in the Free.

As I stated earlier on, the second group was less enjoyable. I think Karina and Nikita had some problems coping with the pressure, big (uncharacteristic) mistakes. I believe it was their first GP? They've got time, there will be more opportunities for them. I felt sorry for Annika and Robert. Such a lovely programme, but missing a lift is even more costly than a fall, while that fall was also there. I am a fan of Riku and Ryuichi, and today they delivered. Not perfect yet, but getting there. A good skate for them, enjoyable to watch. Rightly first. I admit to not really being a fan of Anastasiia and Luka, but generally they do skate their elements well. Not today. A missed lift, a fall, no combination/sequence! It must have been torture for them. And it wasn't nice to watch either. Still managed to get a silver, so on to the the Final they go.

I liked Chaeyeon’s dress too. Not a color seen often but she was beautiful in it

Just watched Pairs free skate. I don't think I've gasped so much watching skating before.

At one point (where they sort of stand still and do arm movements at each other) I wondered if Luka Berulava was unwell because he didn't really move. Which made me a bit scared as they leave a couple of the lifts late in the program.
I was so happy for the Canadian team. Their reaction to the score was lovely, they must've been ecstatic to win a medal. The Japanese team lived up to the Gladiator theme. Amazing.

I probably sound like a broken record when it comes to Tara Lipinski but she is becoming insufferable to listen to. She talks too much, repeats the same phrases over and over and talks inappropriately during a program. I used to really enjoy Johnny because he brought the technical aspect into his commentary but he's getting just as bad as Tara. Please Peacock - send them back to NBC. These two are just too full of themselves. Say what you will about Mark and Chris but they at least know when to shut up!

Womens short- what is with all those comments under the youtube video? Bizarre. None of the placements seem terribly wrong? I admit to shouting "give her 70!" at the screen after Gutmann- surely she will get that at some point this season?


Rhythm dance-
I thought when Carreira and Ponamarenko were skating they looked like they knew something wasn't quite right? It did seem like a justifiable score when you consider the scoring in general. I think it was right that Demougeot and Lemercier ended up placed ahead. The other French team were good but I think their program looks quite similar to last year (movements and the whole ironic retro sci fi thing)- but it works.
Bekker and Hernandez were my favourites. Fun choreography and lots of charisma from the both of them.

It's all well and good to have a rant on the history of pairs skating and the ladies landing jumps. I'm sure ALL of them are capable of landing triples but do they land them in competition? Sometimes. I agree that Danny and Ellie are wonderful to watch but how many times (and I'm sure you have the statistic) has Ellie landed on the ice, losing them critical points, and basically kept them either off the podium or 4th place or farther down. They've had some wins but they've had a lot of "also rans" and it's been mostly because of Ellie not being able to land triples or the throw triples. Not picking on them particularly because I really like them BUT it's just representative of American pairs teams (and probably a lot of non-USA teams) I think it will be interesting to see what Starr Andrews does as a pairs girl.

I think inconsistent side by side jumps (male or female) is an inherent feature of the discipline. Jumps are hard enough as it is without having to synchronise with (and not crash into) someone else.
Even in the "the best" Pair countries- Russians seem to be all over the place at the moment. Sui and Han won the last Olympics with a botched jump pass. They, like the best teams, were just strategic enough to make up for it elsewhere.

I don’t know much about costumes and how they are made tbh but know what I like. There are posters her on GS who might know since they follow the skating fashion scene.. she was stunning last night imv

Honestly, I wouldn't expect even a British skater of that age to know the association, let alone Russians competing for Azerbaijan (and their Russian coaches). It's just part of a soundtrack to them. Skip through it or switch it off if it makes you that uncomfortable.

There's also tonnes of Michael Jackson programs out there. He wasn't convicted, but still.
