2026 Olympics: Free Dance

Ice dance is a crooked sport and I never want to watch it again. If you can't do your twizzles perfect, you don't deserve to win.
Well .. I'm a little dumb about the scores in dance ... but even if I love the music and choreo of C/B ... I have to say the french pair they nail it ... ( and I'm not happy saying that)
A twizzle is one element of a program. I haven't seen the freedances yet, so I will Reserve any more comment, other than to say

How it was during Yuzuru era? I didn't watch skating much back then, but I do remember the crowds.
Ooo those were heady times! The Poohvalanche of stuffies were a sight to behold!

Yuzu, Boyang Jin and Nathan Chen changed men's skating a lot! There was also Shoma and Jason Brown and lots of exciting skaters.

None could jump as effortlessly as Ilia though! Yuzu hoped to be the first to land a Quad Axel but sadly didn't manage it. Ilia has and its changed the game quite a bit.

:love4:I'm so happy for Piper and Paul. They had 8 fantastic programs over the last quad and they got robbed every season. I'm so happy they made the podium. They had the best FD of the event. I will go back to this very often in the future.

Also loved S/D, L/B, T/V, R/A. This was also the first time I enjoyed C/P. Z/K don't do it for me emotionally.

And well. Would never have thought that I'd go "wuzzrobbed" on behalf of Chock and Bates, but what was that judging. Guillaume stepped out of that Twizzle, don't try to tell me otherwise and at least one of the lifts looked shaky as hell. Thematically and even visually this was also a rehash of all the freeskates he did with Gabriella but she did it better.
The inept German gossip girl commentators actually dared suggest Laurence was a better match for him than Gabriella while drooling over his biceps.
Just what.

I think the difference is, that for some reason the contemporary dance style is considered the ultimate form of artistry. You can have the best tango, paso doble, waltz, whatever, but as soon as someone does contemporary... Woow that's true art. 😆
I get the point .. I 'm not a fan contemporary dance in figure skating ... there is a hype true ... a lot of pairs try it but few really succed ... for example if you compare a tango V/M with C/B you can see the difference .. you can't take the eyes of them .. with C/B they are good but they aren't great ... If I had to choose a program to win in advance I would say C/B ..they skated and I loved the program .. them the french pair begin and against all odds I couldn't take my eyes of them

Guys!!! What can I say. What an absolutely brilliant night thanks to Piper and Paul!!! Their performance was SO beautiful and moving. I think the Canadians were by far the happiest fans in the stadium! They deserved those incredible marks. I was seated near other Canadians and we all nearly cried when their scores came up. Paul was so emotional after the performance ended and Piper was so happy. It was honestly the best!!

I have friends in the UK and Ireland who don’t normally watch ice dance and they have all been messaging me to say that Piper and Paul were the performance of the night for them and they were so moving.

I know ppl won’t like me saying this but the French were stunning. They deserved the win, even with Gui’s slip up at the end of the twizzles. Even my husband, who thought their RD was boring thought they were the best tonight. I was seated by the head of the Finnish skating federation and even he thought they were the best.

Madi and Evan were great but eventhough they got a season’s best, it didn’t have the same impact as Piper and Paul or the French. Even one of my friends said their free dance seemed a bit tired. I wonder if maybe performing twice at the team event did affect their ability to be as sharp and dynamic as they could be. They were still great and they weren’t as slow as on TV but maybe nerves made them a bit tight.

It’s late so I can’t type all my thoughts from seeing the event live but I have lots of observations and some gossip about after the medals were awarded but I’ll share those tomorrow when I have time to compose my thoughts. I’m honestly still buzzing from Piper and Paul’s bronze. Thank you skating gods!

The fact that there’s overwhelming consensus that something is off
There is no "overwhelming consensus". Plenty of people feel the French team deserved to win.

This team deserved to be scored many points in the lead if you take that performance and remove the couple small errors. So instead of winning by many points, they won by 1 point. They really were the class of the field. This quaddrenial was the weakest ever for Ice Dance, so it's no surprise that the best male ice dancer ever can pair up with someone who was top 5 in the world and they can manage to become the best team in just 1 year.

He does one thing and he's not a good performer. He's just a great skater. It's why P/ C always lost to V/M in the rhythm dance. He doesn't do energetic dance well or serve face.
He's an excellent performer and served a ton of face in the RD at this competition. He literally managed to out-gay Lewis Gibson in that performance.

Paso Doble does not adapt well to gliding. Here's a good paso.

Riccardo Cocchi & Yulia Zagoruychenko Paso Doble Professional Latin Final - Blackpool 2019 DSI TV 4K

There have been plenty of great Paso Doble's in Ice Dance. Evan Bates simply does not have the ability to be fully convincing in this kind of expression.

I just caught another error from Guillaume upon replay in the rotational lift, his footwork gets really wild, so he actually made 3 noticeable errors. Their corrupt win becomes even more questionable with errors on twizzles, rotational lift, and serpentine step sequence, all from Cizeron. Had any other team committed all these errors, they would have been buried. This is 2014 Sotnikova level corruption! Shame on you, ISU!

I guess I’m just a casual Olympics-every-four-years fan now. I don’t have a trained eye, and honestly, without the passion, I don’t really care about the off-ice drama.

So with zero emotional investment, here’s my take:

Chock/Bates looked slow, and it didn’t feel very paso doble/tango (not sure what they were trying to sell).
Laurence/Cizeron looked more impressive. I’m not really into lyrical programs (not anymore, not after Papadakis), but they looked fast.

😳

Can someone break this down a little more? If the French judge had scored C/B, say, only four points (or some other value) less than the French team, what would the result have been then?
You have to look at this collectively. If you include the six points he preferred in the RD to the eight points in the FD.... well, you do the math.

It's why I was hoping so hard the French judge would be one of those replaced for the Free Dance. When he wasn't, the writing was on the wall.

Could the French have won a fairly judged event? We'll never know. And THAT is what is so unsatisfying about this.

Here's Asher Hill's (Canadian) amusing take on things:

Or so they say. The men were far more competitive right now and it's been that way for a while. I say this as someone who only watched the ladies when I first started.

And back in the 80s & 90s while all of the events were super compelling, the women were the headlining act.
The Men’s event sold out way before the Women’s at Worlds.
