Ladies LP - actual competition

Well, the U.S. is looking pretty screwed for Worlds. Maybe next time they will rethink holding up a 3 triple program. It's just not going to get the job done internationally.

Also, I think Caroline should have won bronze here. The judges still will not allow themselves to keep a "star" off the podium. Whatever.

Joannie impressed me though. She seems to be handling all the pressure just fine.

I absoultely agree with you. Zhang or Phanueff should get the bronze.
The Judges should feel asahme.

The biggest thought I have about tonight is that Caroline needs to go to Worlds if US wants to get those 3 spots. Enough said.

Unfortunately, the above seems to be true. And I don't think the USFS will change course at the last minute. If they REALLY wanted to, could they?

Alissa skates clean, perhaps better than Nationals,

Uhhh. Alissa was NOT clean. She had a 2-footed landing, she also doubled a triple. I don't know if there were any more errors in addition to those. Also at Nationals she was riding in as the leader after the SP, and rightly so. She didn't win the Nats LP.

Here's my updated list for Worlds ladies, based on tonights results. This is how the US would place if they scored as they did tonight, and if the other top ladies do their season's average:

1. Yu-Na 190.16
2. Mao 180.95
3. Joannie 179.97
(* Caroline 171.22)
4. Miki 165.85
5. Fumie 164.15
6. Carolina 163.83
7. Rachael 162.83
8. Alissa 159.81
9. Laura L. 157.36
10. Sarah M. 147.64

So, if we assume Rachael and Alissa are going (safe assumption), we would earn 15 standing, all other things being equal. Again, that's if we skate as we did tonight. So it's not lost IMO, but as I said before we need to either skate our best, OR for Miki, Fumie or Carolina to screw up and drop below us. Of course, we also need the lower girls like Laura, Sarah and Cynthia to not have some kind of breakthrough night. If any lower skater manages to pass up both of our girls, there's basically no hope then. That's not likely though, just a possibility.

As for who to send -- Alissa is National champion. There's no official argument to be made. However, if Alissa "mysteriously withdraws", well, that would raise my eyebrow. Yes Caroline did amazing tonight, but this is essentially the best she can do. It's not the best Alissa and Rachael can do, so...

she was one of the slowest skaters on the night - hard to believe she received the highest scores -

However her performance was really good and she got the highest at TES. She got low PCS. And even Asdada was not so fast she got more high score at PCS

I think they may have been distracted by the speed of her skate this time unfortunately D: Caroline seems like such a nice girl and hard worker...

Because I was really furius, I looked up protocol for SP too.
And guess what? One of the judges gave 0 GOE to Mao's 2Lz. So she is really beloved I can see that.

I begin to hate this sport. But I can't leave this sport because there are so many wonderful skaters and performances. I'm doomed.

Since Alissa is guaranteed her spot to go for being the National champion, I think the only way Caroline could go to Worlds is if Alissa or Rachael decide for themselves to drop out. And we need Reliable Rachael there so... that leaves Alissa...

I have to leave now...sorry if I offended anyone once again with my opinion on the judges "holding people up." That is just what I think, and I am also thankful and respectful for people who disagree with me because that makes discussions interesting

sending "only" two ladies to the olympics does not make the end of the world.

Yeah, it'll be no skin off your back, but dozens of young ladies will be working their butts off to be placed on the Olympic team, and the more spots available, the better their chances will be.

is that a royal "we?" because I won't be complaining. I'm already prepared to shrug it off. if it happens it happens.

sending "only" two ladies to the olympics does not make the end of the world.

Exactly - look at 1998 where Canada didn't get to send any, because at the 1997 worlds our only competitor WD before the LP due to extreme foot injury (she couldn't even get her foot in her skate apparently.) Though I always wished she just put one skate on and just did edges on that one foot around the ice for those 4 minutes to at least finish and allow 1 lady for Olympics...

But these things always happen. I don't even think that it's deliberate. E.g. Duhamel/Buntin had a fall on a 3 Salchow in the pairs free program, and two judges didn't give -3. Joubert fell on the 3 Lutz at Europeans and on judge just gave it a -1.

These mistakes happen with all the skaters, I don't think there is a pattern. Sometimes the judges don't see that someone fell (probably the case with Joubert, he got up so fast!), sometimes they just forget that you need a solo-Triple in your short program and forget to give those -3...

I heard the quality of ice itself was really horrible throughout the entire competitions from the first day. I know that in Canada ice hockey >>>> figure skating, but this is really madness. May that's why so many skaters did poor and slowly in 4CC. I wish world champ will be much better....

Ummm, it's horrible. Though I like Cziney and Flatt, I'm a little worried.
But I'd like respect their decision.

ha ha - that's funny - you really think they aren't looking or do they just not want to see

And Joannie didn't get credit for the 3s in the sequence. Her score would have only been about 4 points or so higher though...

Plus, she made the silly mistake of popping her 1st 2Axel. Her Nationals LP would have won the championship, no doubt.

Chances for what. MEDALS?

The only chance the US has for an '10 Olympic medal is, as I said, if Sasha Cohen comes back and defies all odds, managing the greatest comeback in skating history. And then she could get like ... bronze.

Now, if we get 2 spots, Sasha comes back, and then misses the 2nd spot, that would definitely suck. A lot. Otherwise, our girls are going just for the sake of going. None of these girls can steal a medal from Yun-a, Mao, or Joannie/Carolina etc. Wasn't that proven YET AGAIN just now?

Your list doesn't include everyone though... what about people like Cynthia with her 169.41 from tonight?

that is ridiculous - Canada loves their figure skating and when an event comes to town - they cater to it!!- if some one is using that as an excuse they should be ashamed -
