ITA. I think we're getting "dramatic" and "dark and heavy" mixed up. Shezarazade (... I prbably screwed up the spelling) is a dramatic piece of music, but it's not oppressive by any means. I hope that Mao finds that girl-no, woman, that performed "Scent of a Woman" again for the 2010-11 season and brings it back out w/mature pieces of music that highlights all her strengths, rather than weigh her down. The footwork's amazing; I love the little jumps and the dance and the positions she hits are gorgeous :love: Now Team Mao just needs to find music that will bring out this amazing skater again.
 
Are we going to make a thread about next season programs? :o I didnt know where to post it, I chose here, Takahashi asked Lynn Bourne to choreograph a program for him for next year, jazz theme:cool:

Could be a shell cracker or a total flop, but I'd like to see Davis & White skate to "Miracle of Miracles" from Fiddler on the Roof. Sans vocals, though. They'd look adorable in peasant garb.

Inspired choice. I would LOVE to see them do Fiddler on the Roof. Only they could keep up with the main theme which I have always, always wanted somebody to skate to. Yes, "Miracle of Miracles" "Main Theme" and maybe the bottle dance. Meryl with a long braid down her back....

When I saw the suggestion about Fiddler on the Roof, I thought of the actress who played Chava, the third daughter, in the movie. She had bright red hair. and the actor who played her love was tall and blonde. Pretty close to Meryl and Charlie!

Lots of good tunes in that musical, with great rhythms...hope Davis and White see this thread!

I love Hana/Alice. Alice (Aoi) dancing to arabesque is one of the finest moment of that movie. Alice (Aoi) delivered the joy/ pain/ hope and disappointment all in tht dance. Since Aoi who is ~ Yuna age, and obviously Aoi is a ballerina and Yuna is not, I can't imagine Yuna skating to Arabesque.
Anyway I was comparing Yuna to Aoi

I don't see Yuna skating to Oblivion either. I think Oblivion will make a good group dance for SOI

I wasn't thinking about slimness at all when thinking about maturity. Can't quite explain it but I guess it's just a feeling of mine when I say Mirai has the potential to pull off stronger music. I think Mao, despite being the age that she is, people still want her to skate like she did when she was younger (light, airy, ethereal) and I'm afraid she might have gotten stuck thinking that that's the only genre that she can pull off successfully (and perhaps we did too). Maybe that's why she tried to do Bells which didn't work out as well. Personally I think Mao's very talented, a much better skater than Mirai and I'd love her to experiment the next four years and skate to more dramatic music.

Thanks for the insight. I agree no skater can deliverthe airy ethereal lightness like Mao, therefore she interprets Chopin/ Debussy (artistically) better than anyone. I agree, I love to see Mao develop artistically in the next 4 yrs. I hope she can combine lightness and drama in one piece. That is why I hope she will try Mozart. Mozart expressed saddness /pathos and joy in the same note/phrase. Most other composers express pathos and joy in different notes and phrases. I am hoping Mao will be able to express joy/ saddness/ hope/ disappointment simultaneously. That does not mean she has to skate to heavy dramatic music like Bells of Moscow. I do think a piece like "little bells" La Campenella will be perfect for her.

I agree Salut D amour for Mirai. I think she will interpret this with maturity and sophistication.

I would love to see Jeffrey Buttle skate to "Firehouse's "Love of a Lifetime". It's such a sweet song.

I think someone recommended a section from Coppelia, which is a great idea. There's some really impassioned music from the end of Swan Lake that could be very effective, as well. A little more modern but very steamy is the balcony scene from Prokoviev's Romeo and Juliet.

I was thinking more of Perchik & Hodel or Seidel & Motel, but Chava & Fyedka were cute, too. :)

I think the difference between Mirai and Mao for me is despite the age difference, Mirai sometimes seems more of a mature skater (Don't let that smile fool you) than Mao. I mean in terms of the range of music each skater can skate to, I think Mirai has a wider range and can handle more mature, dramatic music than Mao can. I think in the coming years Mirai should experiment with different styles of music so that she doesn't get stuck in skating to just one style like Mao did when she was younger.

Btw LOVE your pick for Alissa. (Think it would suit her better than Mao, seems more mature)

ITA that Mirai needs more mature music. I'd especially like for to try something abstract and get away from playing a character. But I'd also hate for her to go the Mao route and get all heavy and serious. She needs something that is mature and upbeat at the same time so she can show off that joyful expression and her speed...


I like my pick for Alissa too but sadly I suspect she'll be retiring. Ah well, I'll choreograph a program for her to Cinema Paraiso in my head :)

Funny I don't think of Mao as all that immature of a skater. I think she has the soft movements and lines to do something very romantic. And she's not particularly fast right? So a romantic, sort of heartfelt piece would suit her well. maybe not that one I thought about for Alissa, though...

Virtue/Moir: Idioteque
Someone suggested "Paranoid Android" for Jeremy Abbott which is a clever and intriguing idea. I've been curious to see what Virtue/Moir could do with this piece of music (indeed, there are several Radiohead pieces that would make.... intriguing ice dances).

Cappellini/Lanotte: Kiss of the Spider Woman (medley) (the title song, "Anything for Him" and maybe something else - here's a link to part of the title song). I could also see them doing wonders with stuff from the "A Single Man" score (Clock Tick for the most played piece)

Savchenko/Szolkowy: I dunno - right now I would love to see them skate to "Jupiter: Bringer of Jollity" from Holst's suite. I think it's absolutely staggering.

Patrick Chan: Something by Philip Glass. Kundun or Mishima.
 
I'm probably completely off my rocker with this suggestion, but I'll suggest it anyway. This is going off some of the Broadway/Musical ideas that were being bounced around earlier. But I can see a routine (maybe a free dance?) to music from Spring Awakening, but instrumental (don't know if that exists or not, but someone can come up with it right?). Mostly to slower songs (Whispering, Touch Me, Left Behind, Blue Wind, Mama Who Bore Me). I can just somehow picture this as a really unique free dance for someone, maybe Virtue and Moir (because it would be more modern, but they can still utilize their fantastic connection on the ice).

I happen to like this soundtrack and could see Akiko having fun and skating passionately and joyfully to it.
 
I haven't heard the music for Milagro Beanfield War in a long time. Good, innovative idea for a skating program, Janetfan! Likewise the Little Women soundtrack. I think Milagro would be a first for skaters in the senior ranks, but I vaguely recall Tara Lipinski skating to something from Little Women. Not anyone since then, though. Either way, both selections are off the beaten path, and so they'd be refreshing.
