2014-2015 Programs by Discipline

I'm ok with Megapolis and I can see her skate to this music.
I really hope the FS is not Mulan though. A music for kindergarten. :sarcasm::disapp:

I think Schindler' list suited her age perfectly, given the fact that she was portraying a little girl.
It was a great idea, and it's a music and subject that suits all ages, whether you're a man/boy, girl/woman, pairs, dance

What about this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KozbV_C8Igc&index=9&list=PLBE12DF4B1D55A701 or this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2z2YcUc2avo&list=PL4fnq3KQjXObi274re6ZpSuwaIvPl0kih&index=26 or this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hnuPs8OMHoI. (to me) This is not childish music. It's music children of all ages can enjoy, yes, but the spirit of the movie and the music is extraordinary. It's as good as and sounds much more interesting than much of the classical music out there. Although some parts of the suite wouldn't work for skating.

I admit though that skating to Disney music makes a lot of people upset. I just don't understand why. Is it because the animated movies are geared toward children that you think it's only good for kindergarteners?

I really like the SP, it suits her. It's different from everything else that I (usually) hear.

That is why I'm not going to gripe about the music choice, it's something different.

I can't believe people actually thought that music from Mulan for Yulia's FP would be with lyrics. Why would Yulia Lip choose to skate to the music with lyrics from Mulan?
I think that in the case she saw the cartoon, it had been in Russian and the songs must have been in Russian. And I really doubt she would choose a song with lyrics in Russian.

I don't think this can work. It's to slow and has like a "dragging through the music" effect.

Too short to judge. For the middle section maybe?

Better. I don't like the middle section but the beginning and the end is good. The end especially can work as a closure.
I guess it has to be a mix, very well edited.

What can I say? I don't find this music interesting, let alone extraordinary.
The important thing though is that Yulia likes it, and the judges. She certainly doesn't have to please me every time.
I liked Kwan back than very much but I didn't like her Bolero. It's perfectly normal. Some programs and music we like and some don't.
Also, as I said it before, I have to see how the program (choreo& music editing) is made.
I'm not dismissing something which I haven't seen yet. I just don't like this music. Maybe the program will be great and I will love it.
After all, I've seen plenty of programs which I don't like at all, despite the fact that the music used was a music I liked.

Not all of them, but pretty much so.

I agree.

This!!!!

I have a feeling it will be a mix of multiple parts and they will spare no expense getting it right. Editing is pretty easy nowadays. Above all else, I like that she is willing to throw us a curve ball like this. Seriously...all the Yulia chatter we do here. No one saw a Disney program coming

There's no rule saying a choice has to be original. :rolleye:

Where did I said there is a rule? :sarcasm:
This is a thread about programs. We are here to discuss about this, we haven't seen their programs yet, so all we can speak about is the music.
Do I have to ask your permission before writing a comment, which is not complimentary to Artur's choice (or Tat's choice)?
If you want to know why I think it's not a good choice and something more original could've been better for him, ask and I can explain, but do not bring me the rule talk because I didn't speak, and even think, about the rules.

Oh I agree. She is going in a completely different direction from last year, and I think that's a very good thing.
From all the pieces of Mulan I heard today, I have no idea which one she might have chosen and I'm curious.

Sigh...The story of Hua Mulan existed for hundreds of years before the was even a Disney movie and there are many good reasons why the classic tale has been retold this long. There are universal values which can be appreciated by all and an in built drama (disguised as a man) that can do wonders in the right hands. Although one of its main tracks was written with lyrics in mind, it does not have to feature lyrics but still it should be very helpful in any interpretations just like any Carmen/Les Mis programs and it's integration of various medleys.

I agree, if she is skating to the score then it certainly isn't childish.

I think Mulan would be a good choice. People are automatically assuming she'll skate to something with lyrics but, as Isabel posted, there are plenty of lovely selections from the actual score of the film to choose from. I like that's she's not going the overdone standard route or choosing something that's been done a zillion times. When I read that she chose Mulan, I didn't think of Reflections or I'll Make a Man Out of You (though I love that song! Lol). My first thought was this: http://youtu.be/GvdBZzjEwq0 from where Mulan was preparing to leave...it's a really great piece. If she is skating to Mulan, I'm very interested to see what she comes up with.

As for her SP choice, I love it. I really liked Ksenia's FS to it a few years back so I'm interested to see what she does with it.

Overall, Julia's music choices seem pretty great to me. Guess we'll just have to wait and see what she comes up with

Just so you know, Star Wars is really a rip off old Chinese Wuxia Genre except set in space instead of Medieval China. Even the medichlorians aka the force is just another word for 'Chi' which provide the basis for everything WuXia (2 words translate as Martial arts avenger) like it does for Jedis in stories rife with clansmanship/honour/politics/journey of a hero vs evil parables. Mulan doesn't exactly belong to the WuXia genre (nor a Disney movie originally), but she does use a sword/sabre being a member of the Chinese militia so I wouldn't count out a few mime sword/lightsabre fight out yet. Very curious on the costume myself, nothing pink or girly. Yulia being bit of a Tom boy in real life, who ride horses, like techno music, should make a very intriguing Mulan for sure! Will there be 2 sides of Mulan, warrior princess or just generic girly Mulan skating to pretty music?

Thank you for the info and inspiring hope that maybe she can do some Mulan inspired spin attack.

Re: Costume

She has a history of great dresses. I loved Kung Fu Panda. After looking at some Hua Mulan outfits I'm very curious as to what they come up with but given their record....it could be something really interesting

Another update from Mervin Tran:

Responding to a query re "Summertime," he acknowledged that they are skating to it.

- courtesy of CassAgain on FSU and on Twitter

Pretty sure that he means that it is their SP music. He previously had tweeted that "Ain't No Sunshine" had been misidentified as their SP music.

Davankova&Enbert are skating to Lara's Theme from Zhivago. My friend doesn't know which program is that though, SP or LP.

I don't know why many people think Mulan is childish? May be they only remember the singing song part of the movie; some of the score is actually quite epic.

Oh at least it is still better than another Carmen, R&J or POTO.

Shen/Zhao and Michael Weiss used the Mulan score in the 90's. The choices they made were from the suite, which were quite EPIC, as you said.
