2014 Olympics Mens Free Skate

What a DREADFUL event! Worst men's final I've ever seen, and I've been watching since 1980. At least in 1992 Wylie gave the performance of his life (albeit with a few flaws).

My favorite performances in order from best:
1) Jeremy Abbott- brave, elegant, spiritual
2) Denis Ten- don't love the program but he performed brilliantly until the last minute, and his basic skating is so elegant and pleasant to watch. Also a good comeback from earlier in the season.
3) Takahashi even without the jumps he is just so smooth, interesting, and heartfelt
4) Martinez- what a talent!

I would have put Chan over Hanyu. Even with the glitches, it was a superior program by a long shot.

My favorite moments:
1) Jeremy hugging Yuka in K & C
2) Jason's thrilled expression when he realized he was Top 10
3) Misha Ge's flair and his adorably supportive tweets

Agree. He should dismiss his quads and just do his magic. Clean skates. (I always liked him and was a bit sad, I had always watch nationals on youtube for the amazing performances he delivered)

Agreed! His programs are beautiful and he is so smooth and elegant and moving.

Random thought - Since it's likely that Hanyu will continue skating and show up at the next Olympics, do you guys think he'll stick with Brian Orser as his coach, or move his training back to Japan?

You forgot the option of him being trained by Plushenko

I do hope Abbott goes to Worlds. I would love to see him sneak out a surprise medal. Who knows, maybe he could. He will have no pressure at all if he goes, and as we were reminded again this is the weakest and most inconsistent mens field in history, so a skater as talented as Abbott popping off 2 good performances out of the blue would probably get enough help to medal.

I could not agree more. I think Jeremy could medal, especially if Patrick and Dai don't skate.

I realize its a mental block. But to quote Yagudin , a jump is not consistent unless you land it in competition. I am not sure it was wise to use it at the Olympics because its clearly not there yet. However, he may have felt if he didn't go for it, he'd regret it.

Yuzu is one of those really stubborn people (sorry for my lack of better term) who will go for it regardless. I think for him, he knew he can still win Silver or maybe Gold with a fall on the 4S as long as everything else is clean. So he went for it.

I also think it's a mental block. He was so close to landing it!

No, no, no, absolutely NOT. It is far too risky. Jeremy hasn't broken any pattern yet or done anything to prove he's any good under pressure. He's retiring after this season - why should he get a chance to ruin Worlds for the future skaters? If Jeremy goes to Worlds Max will have to medal just to keep two spots.

C'mon Jeremy, you had your nice little swansong in the LP, which was absolutely lovely, now go and enjoy retirement and let Max and Jason do what they need to do without Max having to feel even more pressure because of your meltdowns.

I haven't read the thread yet, but I'm ticked at Chan. Hanyu left the door wide open and he simply refused to skate through it. He didn't have to be perfect or brilliant; he didn't have to be as flawless as he was at TEB. He just had to be relatively clean, something he is more than capable of doing. But no.

It's like Hanyu handed him the gold and Chan just dropped it. :bang:

At least Plushenko, when asked what he had to say to his critics, responded with "Thank you very much" as he looked straight into the camera with a big smile.

You need to get your Sarcasm Radar adjusted if you think Plush was in any way being sincere or polite.

Why would one have to be genuinely polite to one's critics?
Then again, he could have even been sincere in the sense of deriving motivation from one's detractors, or of enjoying showing that he doesn't give a ****.

Michael Christian Martinez received a $10,000 bonus from the MVP Sports foundation!

Wow good for him, he was my favorite performance of the day, he has natural talent. I also like Christopher Caluza. They have great skater in Philipine and I hope that both of them continue to improve in their skating, they have great potential!

I feel sad for Patrick Chan, he lost the Olympic Gold medal because he didn't fix his technique on the axel. All of his axel jumps were not good in this event. He should have fix this jump for the Olympic :(

I am sure Jeremy wants to end his career with a World medal. Given how the men skated here he absolutely can, he just needs to put it together for once already.

In over 4 years he has not put it together for once.. not like it will happen now.. I think after this season the whole system for choosing competitors for worlds will be revamped.
