2016 Four Continents Ladies Free Skate

I think the idea for Gracie was her building up on nationals momentum. When was the last time she beat Satoko? If she had won 4CC she would be better positioned than Satoko in Boston provided both are clean. Then it would be about she vs. Medvedeva. Looks like good thinking. But she could not deliver. Now based on how things are done in FS over years and years only a major scandal can push Gracie above Medvedeva and Satoko if everyone is clean. After Sochi Gracie's best score is 202. If we combine her best individual programs it is still 210 only. Satoko just scored 214 and with her momentum if she provides another clean "artistic" routine with tiny jumps she might get 216-217 enough to win over Medvedeva with 1 fall but not enough to win over clean Medvedeva. I just do not see how Gracie can have score like that even if she does not pop and fall.

Congrats to all the skaters - they tried though some more than others.

Some general comments - while there was some promise the top skaters did not really deliver. Congrats to Miyahara but regardless of prerotations she does not have the polish of the greats ie Kwan but it may very well be enough in this market to win world gold. I do think she was too generously marked.

Bravo to the silver medallst Mirai - she didn't give up and represented the US well saving them from shame and embarrassment. Some of her jumps are a bit iffy and she could do with a bit more speed.

As for Rika she gets the job done but the River dance lacks conviction and star power or appeal by her.

Murakami oh my - Memoirs of a nightmare - outfit and performance.

Gracie Gold - it seems like she is the golden girl but she doesn't take the gifts she has been given. I am sure she tried but for whatever reason she keeps on getting gifts I am glad Mirai beat her but in the long well and short it should have ben by more. Probably more on point is comparing Gold to Osmond from Canada. I think Osmond should have beaen her in both the short and long. Osmond really performs and look at her edges - she is actually a good skater - y es she saved the jumps today but she has the whole package. She lights up on the ice; I think Canada made the wrong decision in not sending her to worlds even as the second Canadian she is a wonderful choice and has the potential to be in the top ten or even 5 whereas Idon't think you can say that about Daleman - maybe Chartrand.

Some hope from the Asian nations; the ladies need to distinguish themselves a bit more though. Nice skates by Li and Kim

Congrats to Satoko for being so consistent. But her score is about 5 points too high- the GOE on some of her elements is out of control. She shouldn't be able to get above 140 without a 3-3 combo. And while she's very precise, her performance quality is not the same as a Kostner or a Suzuki (skaters who have gotten similar scores without a 3-3).

Mirai was magnificent! I'm so happy that she competed well and had good scores to match. Here's hoping that she skates like this all next season (and gets a program that's less hodgepodge-y than her Great Gatsby program).

I think Gracie might be sick or slightly injured. She just looked listless through both phases of the competition and she took out a lot of her difficulty in the free skate. Maybe it's just a mental issue. Whatever her problem is, I really hope she fixes it in time for Worlds. Talent-wise, there's no reason she shouldn't be on the podium there.

Just glad Osmond came out of a competition without an injury! She is beautiful to watch. Though, Some of those jumps go crooked in the air - I hold my breath!

Scores shouldn't be held back based on momentum...even though they often are, just as they are increased based on momentum. That said, clean skates + being a country's #1 + hometown crowd means that the judges won't hesitate to ignore the lack of momentum and reward Gracie if she's clean (which I doubt, but hey, maybe lightning will strike like with Adelina in Sochi.) But a clean Gracie should beat a clean Satoko any day, regardless of momentum. Just look at the jumps! Granted, Satoko has excellent spins and steps, but then so does Gracie. If all 3 are clean, Satoko is looking at a bronze medal. Evgenia's SP lead due to backloading would probably eke her out ahead of Gracie.

Gracie managed 4th place at Worlds last year after a disaster 4CCs and an equally disastrous SP. She's got the whole package when she puts it together, and judges will reward her for what she puts on the ice even if her last performance was a mess. And that's fair, IMO. In figure skating, the rule shouldn't be "you're only as good as your previous performance," it should be "you're as good as what you put on the ice THAT DAY."

But if it comes down to Satoko v. Evgenia for the title, I'll take Evgenia any day--hopefully she doesn't fall. She doesn't have the strongest jump technique in the world, but at least she's rotating her jumps.

I didn't watch the event, but Miyahara' technical scores in the LP routine are really a surprise to me: 74+ ? Such low & tiny jumps? Wow, that really tells something.

I don't like Myahara's skating. I admit it. I don't disagree with the placements. When she skates clean and no on else does she should get the gold.

It's the score I can't understand. Is there a rule the winner has to get over 200 points? Her 214.91 today makes her the 6th highest scorer of all time -just behind Mao and ahead of Tutameshiva, Gold, Cohen. Suzuki. If we can just stop counting points and look at it. How can she be in the same room with the likes of Mao or Tut on their best days?

Nothing against her. But the irrationality of the scoring boggles.

Uh-oh...I'm actually starting to think that Satoko can spoil all the fun for me winning over Medvedeva:scard7: Medvedeva vs Miyahara as front-runners for worlds! Who'd think!

I like Satoko but the fact that some skaters get questionable UR calls and neutral GOE while her pre-rotated jumps can get big GOE is not right. If I were a skater like Mao I'd be ticked. The scoring is out of control.

It's not just her, but it's most obvous with her. I can't with this season's scoring. Last season was better with the scoring. This season is better and more exciting because the depth in EACH field is incredible. But this cannot continue, the scoring is absolutely ridiculous. I don't see how Miyahara gets higher TES than TUKTAMYSHEVA at EUROS last year.

And a question to North Americans: who do you think should go to worlds? Ashley, Polina and Gracie or Mirai Ashley and somebody else?

Satoko's free skate was so beautiful. She runs rings around the Russians in artistry. And the program is a Lori Nichol masterpiece.

Honestly, I it were me I would send Mirai, she is more reliable than Gracie and Polina now :)

I think the team we selected is the best we've had in years. I love Mirai but..........She dug herself into a hole last season and fortunately, she's been able to dig herself out of it. She's set herself up well for better assignments next season and if all goes well, she'll be at Worlds in 2017.

Imagine the top lady skaters in a room. Zhenya speaks Russian. Polina E translates Russian to English. Mirai translates English to Japanese. Satoko receives.
Depending on the translation skills of Polina E and Mirai, Zhenya says "I love strawberries." Satoko hears "I hate raspberries."

Satoko speaks English. She lived in the US for a few years as a child.

I think the right team is going already. Mirai's had a good year and an excellent showing here (yay! :hap10:), but she's still in the rebuilding phase. I'm so happy for her for the direction she's going in with her coach, and maybe next year, she'll be on that team :)
