He was born in Israel to Russian parents, but grew up in the USA.

He speaks even better Russian! :)

P.S.: It's all in the genes. The coach is his father Igor Samohin (former coach was Igor Pashkevich) , the choreographer is his mother Irina and has an older brother Stanislav (nearly 8 years older) who competed for Russia and Israel.

Thanks. Anyways, strange if this was his planned content,

I looked at his FS from US Championships and his jump content there was:

3A
3Lz
3Lo
2A-1Lo(downgraded)-3S
3F-3T
3Lz-2Lo
3F
2A

for 8 triples total, repeating the 3Lz and 3F.

Since he had 2 3A's today and not at US Championships, must have gotten confused with the changes to his jump layout.

It's a shame though. Cause even if he just did a 2A, he probably would have received silver. Oh well. He wasn't even expected to be here in the first place.

Alex O gets another skater on the podium.

Oh I did not know that. So there is no way he could do that switch? I think there is a place in Japanese Juniors for a bright talent still.

I don't get it. Why is it important to switch him to Japan? He's an American citizen and the last time I check the US is in great need of good male skaters.

It seems that Tomoki Hiwatashi's father is an expatriate employee of a Japanese company and his sisters are enrolled in Japanese universities. Most likely he has dual citizenships. Unlike Mirai's family, they can "move back" to Japan without much problems.

Of course, it's up to him to represent which country.

Kudos to Daniel for winning after 9th in the SP! :drama:

And surprise bronze medalist Tomoki! He could be in the mix for the Junior Worlds title next year. What a talent. Love that the US men brought it even with Nathan out.

Almost finished with my blog post on this! It's an IceNetwork-style variety piece (except slightly less professional because I put in quite a bit of my own opinions :p) discussing the men's FS, Duskova/Bidar's win, the ladies SP tie and Lauriault/Le Gac's suspicious ISU bio.

Yay!

I'll be doing my standard piece on the entire event.... :slink:

Good...it'll balance out the craziness of my posts

In all seriousness, I considered pulling an IceNetwork and calling my men's recap one of these bad skater-name puns:

"Better than Aliev the Rest" (which wouldn't work anymore...)
"Much Nadeau About Nothing"
"Low-Key Tomoki Coasts to Bronze"

I am a master of cringeworthy puns, but nothing can top the Team USA Valentine's Day tweet: a picture of Meryl and Charlie captioned "not a Davis goes by that I doubt you're the White one for me!"

Made me want to crawl in a hold and die, LOL.

His roots have been discussed a lot.

Well, the wording of your previous comment seemed to imply that Daniel is Russian, which he simply isn't. And his achievement as the first Israeli skater to win JW should be taken as such. What his roots are is kinda irrelevant.

I think both Daniel Samohin and Nicolas Nadeau were shortchanged in the sp scoring in the first place. And Kevin Aymoz was over-rated. Both Hwan Cha and Hiwatashi I thought showed better overall technique and dynamic presentation skills in the sp, than did Aymoz.

I know Samohin had a few miscues in the sp, but not enough to have him that low in the sp! Cool that it didn't phase Samohin. He knew he could rely on his strengths and skate well in the fp to pull up. But what a great pull-up!

So sad for Deniss V, but he needs to improve his technical consistency. Nice that Deniss will have an opportunity to put his talent on display at senior Worlds. Will Samohin compete at senior Worlds too, or is there just one spot available for Israel at senior Worlds (already taken by Bychenko)?

I would imagine that Samohin skates for Israel because having that option available to him works much better than trying to break through the logjam of Russian and/or U.S. men. ;)

No Russian federation involvement.

LOL. Let's ask Alexei Bychenko if training in the US and skating for Israel has helped his PCS. Or how about the Ukrainian, Taiwanese or Georgian guys who train in the US - look how well they placed here. I think having the backing of a strong federation is clearly more beneficial than coming from any small fed. Btw, Deniss Vasiljevs is Latvian, trains in Russia & gets very high PCS. There is simply no rhyme or reason to your crackpot theories.

Deniss V actually gets high PCS probably mainly because he has exceptional natural talent musically and expressively, plus he possesses a lovely movement quality. Deniss is a rare showman at a young age. Fingers-crossed that Deniss works out strengthening and increasing the difficulty of his technique. :luv17:

I just realized that both Deniss V and Nathan Chen are sixteen with loads of rare precocious talent (Nathan is stronger technically, but Deniss is no slouch in terms of technique, he just needs to strengthen which surely will come as he matures). Nathan's challenge is going to be staving off injury and maximizing his command of technique and presentation skills.
