2016 Trophée de France Ladies FS

LOL a judge gave Gracie positive GOE on her fall. And you guys complain about Evgenia ......

If Evgenia is getting over marked these days its because she earned a positive reputation with the judges after skating cleanly multiple times and did so when it mattered most. She stepped up to the plate when others wouldn't and now she's getting rewarded for that at every competition no matter how she skates (she isn't the only one. just look at the mens, EVEN WORSE). Gracie on the other hand has no reputation like that at all yet still gets over marked. Her 111 in the free was an even bigger joke then Evgenia's 143. Her 54 in the SP was too.

After the good SP, this was a big shock and like I said earlier, it's safe to say that the ice caused at least half of this mess. Podium is not too surprising though.

1. Evgenia Medvedeva: I was shocked to see her fall, but she had a nice rebound after it. Again, I'll end it here (that score...:curse:).
2. Maria Sotskova: Great to see that she stayed on her feet and fought for the jumps. Obviously the ice conditions weren't good so it was a bit of a shaky performance, but still a great GP debut for her. The program is too monotonous though...hopefully it will look a bit better at NHK.
3. Wakaba Higuchi: I think I'm close to being a fan! Wakaba's presentation looks good and her jumps are good enough for . PCS was really inflated here, but it's nice to see her finally come up to the senior ranks. With the bronze here, she still has a shot to make the GPF.
4. Gabrielle Daleman: What a heartbreaking end for her. The scores were okay, but you could tell that she suffered a lot on that ice. Due to combo being in that puddle corner, she slipped off and that probably shook her a lot for the rest of the performance. I hope Gabby comes out strong for Nationals.
5. So Youn Park: Really glad to see that her PCS has gone up by quite a lot! To score 120 even with a fall is a great achievement (and earning a PB finally in 2 and a half years). Like with Evgenia, So Youn did very well after the fall. I'm wishing that this will finally be a turning point for So Youn.
6. Laurine Lecavalier: With all honesty, I say Laurine was marked over-generously here, but more than that it was such a great competition for her. She's such a lovely skater and I used to sometimes not really watch her, but now she is definitley someone to watch. Good job!
7. Mae Berenice Meite: Mae rocked that FS! After such a bad SP, I love how she went out onto the ice with guns blazing and turned in a fiery performance. I hope we can see more of these performances from Mae in the future.
8. Gracie Gold: ...at least she had more face here...
9. Mao Asada: ...at least her skating and program are still phenomenal...

Mr Steve Winkler! Same US judge who was so biased in Pairs competition! Well, looking at other GOE he has given, it might have beed a mistake...

Sometimes judges hit the wrong button. :drama: Complaining about the scores for a skater who came in 8th? Really? Talk about kicking her while she's down.

The fact that Gracie continues to be overmarked despite a string of poor performances this year is mind boggling. Not that overmarking is ever ok, but the rationale behind the judges using PCS to prop a skater up makes sense if it meant the difference between a win and second or third, or even from 4th or 5th to a podium finish.

(Allow me to clarify my personal stance again: PCS inflation is NEVER ok. However, in that situation, it happens and will continue to happen, so let's not be naive).

But when a skater bombs her program, ends up miles away from the podium in the standings and still gets a PCS boost, it's just asinine.

:bang:

So the two newbies medal! Sotskova couldn't really grab my attention the way Higuchi could. I think overall both still have ways to go to really get that technical and artistic edge to really be the top of the world but deserved medalists here so I wouldn't be surprised to see them in the mix pretty soon.

Devastating for Gabby! Asada and Gold... I honestly would've been more surprised if they had delivered. Still hard to watch.

I'm so confused. Gracie received a 62 in PCS, lower PCS than 4 other skaters here. She was ranked 5th overall in PCS for the LP. Mao skated much worse today than Gracie did and received 60 points for a performance that was slower and more tentative. Should we not reward Gracie's skating skills and excellent choreography and execution of that choreography? Should we stop rewarding her level 4 spins and footwork?

The only skater who probably should've received more PCS than Gracie but didn't was So Youn, but that's more due to So Youn being lowballed than Gracieinflation. It's nice that Mae skated well, but it's also evident that her skating skills and choreography, heck, even her commitment to the performance, are light-years behind Gracie.

Mostly silence. There was some polite applause for her jumps.

I came back in as they were beginning the replay and noticed the lack of applause. Not surprising, considering that last year at this time, the event was cancelled because of the Paris attacks. No wonder the crowd wasn't receptive.

Evgenia seemed upset, too. I thought it was because she fell, but maybe not.

I wish they would rethink the whole thing, considering that the GPF is being held in France. It was a bad idea to begin with.

Why is she lowballed so often? Is there something about her skating that I don't see because she seems to on par with many others who get better PCS than she does. It's a bit of a mystery. Does she skate slowly or small? Is her ice coverage weak?

I saw So Youn at worlds and skate America. She's not fast, but she's not slow either. Her ice coverage is decent too.

It's just that she doesn't have the reputation yet.

Wakaba - I haven't been this excited and hopeful for a lady skater since Yuna retired. Couple of ladies piqued my interest now and then, but I'm pretty much sold on her after her performances here. Big jumps, fast, powerful, and if she can improve her spins a bit and master mixing her "powerful" skating with more "soft, lyrical" skating in accordance with music and beat (which Yuna was a genius at) I think she'll be a great, great skater! :yay:

Andromache, I suppose you're right, I agree that Gracie has great skating skills, transitions and choreography, but I find that when she has a bad skate with falls, pops, and stumbles, she becomes more tentative and stiff in her skating - her edges lose their deepness, her speed begins to decline, and her choreography becomes rushed and frantic as if she wants to get the rest of the program over with and get off the ice ASAP - this should lead to a drop in the marks for those areas. I'm not one of those people who thinks that having a low TES should equal low PCS, because they should be two entirely different marks. But we simply can't assume that a technical mistake doesn't affect program components at all.

It's her performance and interpretation scores that get me the most. Even on a good day with a perfect program, Gracie's weakness is still evident in those components of her skating.

I am contempating now if I should read the thread or not. The latter makes sense for me if half of the posts or so are about how overscored Medvedeva was and how exceptional Wakaba is.

My own impression - it was a disappointing event. May be something wrong was with the ice. The placements at the top are correct.

Not the best Medvedeva's skate. She was still the clear leader with no one near.

Maria's landings were even more shaky than in SP. Not a good feeling having Radionova's image in mind.

Wakaba did her best but I was and am not an enthusiast of her skating. I prefer last year Anna's Shekherezade and I prefer Wakaba's own SP to her FP.

Gaby just let a medal go. She did not need any special performance. She just had to do what she can do: skate fast and powerfully and jump big. Something went wrong.

So Youn and Laurine were the only bright spots for me because they did better than expected.

Leonova....sigh. She just wants to stay but it is deteriorating beyond any reason. I am sure it is her last season. She just needs one good competition to finish it up with a good mood.

Don't take me wrong, I loved Wakaba, but why is her PCS higher than Maria's?
I felt asleep during Sotskova's FS and woke up to see my Ipad was showing medals ceremony. Enough said.
I guess the judges were trying really hard not to fall asleep during Sotskova's skate.

The Medvedeva overscoring talk mostly started after she skated. There were a few comments here and there leading up to that, but not too bad until the end, as usual.

You should really read the thread though. I made some really funny jokes way back in there, you will laugh and you will cry!

OK, you convinced me. It is 2 a.m. in Moscow and I watched only ladies. But let's see what news is there.

Anyone thinks the fact that Wakaba gets good PCS at her first GP event suggests that judges are on the path to shake Satoko's #1 Japanese lady status?
As long as Wakaba keeps her jumps, her PCS can only get better with time. Her biggest disadvantage though, is that she does not have a stick figure as Satoko or Evgenia, and most elite lady skaters.

I don't mind Wakaba's figure and find it refreshing at a time when the waif-like Evgenia is dominating. As long as her weight is at peak for doing her jumps, I don't see why she would be disadvantaged. She's just a more muscular girl. Reminds me of Shizuka.

I'm very happy to see Wakaba get PCS that are largely deserved when compared with the field. Unlike many posters here, I don't think PCS should be held back just because it's someone's first year up from juniors, and IMO, lots of girls bring a lot of maturity even though they are young. Wakaba's LP isn't anything special, but she has excellent skating skills and more of a "star quality" presence than Satoko does (but less than Mao or Marin.) And she's come a long way from being the immature jumper she was 2 years ago.

In comparison, Maria looked much more tentative than Wakaba, and I think her program was more boring. But she's someone who could really shine in the future.

Today is exactly one year since the attacks, bad idea from the beginning ... everyone worried about the reception in the USA and actually in Europe the memory is strong too
