2017 Four Continents Men SP

Do you really believe they (top men) will all show up at 4 CC's? Risk injury before Worlds? Risk coming in off the podium behind 3 of their competitors going into Worlds?

Yep. Each of them have a good reason for showing up to 4CC.

First, this is the Olympic Arena for next year. It's a great way to get a feel for the ice and the arena. The same thing happened in 2009 with Vancover.

Yuzuru: Hasn't had a clean long yet. His 4Lo is still not 100% consistent. Plus he had the flu at nationals and had to miss competing. This gives him one last chance to land a clean 4 quad program before worlds. Plus he thrives off pressure. This line up will push him to be at his best. I predict WR here!

Patrick: Also hasn't landed a clean long this year(with 3 quads). His 4S is new and this is a great chance for him to practice his 3 quad program with no pressure.

Nathan: Coming off a big win, he now needs to show the world he can complete two clean programs internationals. The line up also gets him used to pressure at worlds.

Shoma: Had a rough skate at nationals. His programs are really challenging. Gives him a chance to compete again and gain some momentum for Worlds.

Boyang: Mixed season. Had a bad skate at nationals. This is a opportunity for him to work the bugs out the program and also gain some momentum into worlds.

Denis: In the middle of a comeback. Looking good so far at universiade. 4CC is a Great competition so he can build some momentum into world.

Jason: Needs this the most. Off the ice for weeks with injury. His national performance was below his standard. Great way for him to get his body used to competing ahead of worlds and prove that his injury is behind him.

Oh the drama! I can't wait! Let me stock up on coffee and Red bulls!

WOW... way to belittle the achievements of a skater... Javi still had to skate... still had to rack up enough points to win it... Sure there were no Yuzu, nor Superboy'ang nor Nathan.... but there were a bunch of other guys like the Russians, one of them was 4th in the world last year...

Anyways. I'd choose my words differently if you simply meant to say that Javi is probably happy that he had the opportunity to skate in a confidence booster event instead of in what appears to be a bloodbath...

I hope that all this hype about the men's event won't turn it into a splat fest like Worlds FP last year

Lol, please. No, sorry, I don't think he "was happy that he had an opportunity to skate in a confidence booster event" - that's politically correct bull, I meant exactly what I said. Why mince words? He won with a bad LP, and rightly so, because he's head and shoulders ahead of the European field - including the bunch of Russians (and I do enjoy Kolyada and Kovtun quite a bit but they're not Javi's league). It wouldn't have happened if he'd had Nathan, Shoma, Boyang, Yuzuru and Patrick all up against him because on of those would have certainly done enough to wrestle the gold away from him.

That said, I also do hope the event won't be a splatfest. I'm not expecting compketely clean skates from the quadified programs but I'm hoping they'll limit the falls to one and that two or three of the top guys won't fall at all.

All the reasons frida80 mentioned, but this is probably the most important. In the pre-Olympic year it's good to know what it'd feel like to skate in February.

What, do you have insider information that Boyang will change his SP? Would be sad not to have the Spiderman SP anymore :p

I'd say chances are pretty high that we might see Shomas 4Lo at 4CC btw, though maybe not the SP but 'only' LP... given he's been doing it in Ice Shows and Nathans big nationals win with quads quads quads, I think Shoma might not want to be 'overtaken'. That said, I'd prefer it if he'd stick to his 'old' layout and would just focus on himself - but youth is impatient... :slink:

HAHA i wrote that post early in the morning and confused spiderman and superman.... could have been worse ;) but if boyang is this year's spiderboy, he will always be a superboy ;)

Superboy' ang, lol :laugh2: the nicknames keep coming :rofl2:

I'm super excited for 4cc! Hopefully Eurosport will broadcast it! I'm looking forward seeing:

- Hanyu slaying it, since he skates best when he feels his rivals are at his heels
- SpiderBoyang getting lots of love for his shimmy shoulders
- Seeing Nathan and Boyang at the same competition and comparing their PCs
- Misha!! and Jason bringing the lines and spins!

oups... see my explanation above ;) :palmf:

Uhm, beyond the "non-Ashley" event meme, most of this thread is about the men's discipline. Agree it will be potentially amazing..... BUT...

Am I the only one looking forward to seeing how

- the women (minus Ashley) fall out without Evgenia there to take up the assumed lead in the judges minds (not snarking, sometimes it's essential to have an event without the front runner for judges to take a clear look at the relative strengths of the rest...)

- the NA ice dance teams shake up against one another when they have the top 3 from other the US and Canada at one event

- the NA and Chinese pairs stack up now that we're into the run for the wire????

-----

oops, just realized that this is the MEN'S sp thread, not the entries thread....which is a rather thin 2 pages of information, more than discussion. The extent of the "Best competition" discussion got me muddled...:o::o:

But my point that there is not a lot of interest in the other disciplines stands : the Ladies thread has 1 reply, Dance 6 and Pairs 4.

:shocked:6 pages???I thought the competition already started and was like holy crap I remembered wrong schedule or what:palmf:

Nathan just did an interview with IceNetwork and talked about how he didn't think that Four Continents were as much of a focus for him as Worlds (and I don't think anyone does) but he feels like it's important for him to go to not only get another chance to compete against so many of the top skaters but also to get a feel of what it's like to be in South Korea and travel there, how to best become adjusted to the time changes, etc. So I definitely think it being in the same arena has a lot of pull with so many of these skaters, even though there's definitely no guarantee that skating there once will make for a good Olympics for any of these guys. I have to say, I am surprised that Jason is still listed to go... I was figuring he'd pull out to make sure he was healthy for Worlds but I see he's still listed. It's a great field though, I'm looking forward to seeing how they stack up against each other.

FWIW, Jason said in an interview that he expected his leg to be 100 percent one week after Nationals, so he should be good to go

I have nothing to say (except good luck to all skaters and especially Jason!)

I just want to see how many pages we can manage to generate before the actual event starts

I thought we'd be at 10, but I grossly underestimated this thread.

Which is way better anyway!

I really hope Boyang knows how amazing is name is for finding awesome program titles, and gives us more and more of those

hehe there are a lot of options with jin too ;) mostly drinkable ones though ;)

Never underestimate THE POWER OF TEAM AUSTRALIA :cheer:

I am looking forward to the global launch of The Nokia Theme program.

Are you looking on a laptop? Six pages on my iMac ....

anyway, how many pages will we hit before the actual event:biggrin:

I´m looking on a laptop and now it is 98 messages and still 3 pages... I don´t think I have changed the setting, how many messages are shown on a page. If the aim for some people is to have so many pages as possible, maybe you can change the setting into one or two messages on a page?

That's good to know, that would mean he had enough time at full practice and though we did see him for a bit, it's hard to judge based on that.

I'll laugh if the event fizzles out after so much anticipation
