2018-19 South Korean figure skating

I like Jihun To. but sadly her jumps kind of UR most of the time and she needs to fix it but she has quite lovely SS.

also do you guys think You Young can make it to JGPF? I'd say she need silver medal at least and 190+ score so she can win the tiebreaker (if there is any) which she really capable of. 66 in SP and 125+ in FS if both clean. I think she need to play safe without 3A unless its THAT consistent /she rotate it and did not fall, like stepout/turns. Because falling on 3A< is worthless basically.

I'm quite surprised You Young didn't get called on any URs in her free, especially since she URs SO MUCH. That's what's holding her back from the JGPF, because with URs, you just can't score high enough to win the tie-breaker. If Tarakanova bombs and URs and You Young isn't called for any URs, she could get silver, but I doubt she'd get the high score needed. And Tarakanova is getting back to strength rapidly. Yokoi is also in JGP Canada, and if she doesn't mess up her SP like she did in Bratislava, she could also be a contender.

Meh, we'll see! i remember that many people didn't even think she'd land all her jumps in competition because of how inconsistent she was last season. And she did.

Might be able to if you/You can master a triple axel. I'm sure she's working on the URs. Suspect it is why she went to Tom in the first place.

I’m quite happy You didn’t get called on any URs in the free tbh. If they’re going to be strict they need to be strict with every single skater in the event.

With that said, I think her FS is weaker. Her SP is pretty good and she looked confident in it. Perhaps she hasn’t practiced the FS enough, Idk.

I hope she fixes her URs with time. Perhaps next season she’ll be more used to her new inches of height and her technique will be better.

I’m just glad she’s improved so much! A bright talent!

True. But Tom isn’t known for fixing URs, which concerns me.

He's known for helping make Mirai competitive again after she had basically fallen off the map. Never the cleanest skater, but yes, much improved in getting credit for her rotations after she went to Tom. When she tightened up with nerves, she didn't get them. But often, yes. Far better than they were before she went there. He is far from my favorite coach because he doesn't seem to value choreography; but Tammy does. And he helped get both Vincent & Mirai to the Olympics. No small task. I think this coaching partnership could really work; but teams of coaches are like pairs & dance teams. One never knows.

As far as You's FS is concerned, I think My Fair Lady is too tame for her. She needs something with more drama or spark.

I'm not sure if Tammy & Tom will be the right coaching team for her. But she was mighty close to Tarusina here, and training that triple axel would indeed put her over. So I can see why they're giving this a shot.

Yeah. My Fair Lady is a big step from her FS last season (Pirates of the Carribeans). It’s more mature and I don’t think she portrays the main character. She just glides around the rink.

I don't think that just because something is softer it is more mature. The tango is more mature, and she handled it well. My mother did comment that she doubted Young knew the story of My Fair Lady so plausibly a cultural mismatch, and I'd agree it doesn't look like she portrays this character well. At least not as well as she has many of her other skating roles.

It's all part of the learning process though--on the part of both the skater and the coaches/choreographers. You wouldn't think it would be that big a leap to go from Funny Girl to My Fair Lady, but there is a world of difference between the two characters and their sentiment, really.

The short program for her was quite good this competition. Actually, I was somewhat impressed by it. I didn't think it was as good when I first saw it in some Korean competition(qualifier or something?). However, I still don't like the FS at all. Indeed, it doesn't even feel like a program. Her last season's FS was much better and more involved. I don't think it suits her and I don't think there's so much going on. It feels like the music... exists, but meh. It was quite a disappointment, after the short program. I doubt she'll change the program mid-season, but hopefully she'll take note that a style like her SP works for her and the FS doesn't and goes with something more appropriate for her next season.

I'll reserve the possibility that she's going to be able to present her FS better over the course of this season but this is a program I'm not very hopeful for.

Ah, that makes me think. I wonder if Young would be in seniors next season, or would be staying in juniors, still? The senior competition shouldn't be too tough for her domestically so she should be able to be top 2. Eunsoo is the only one who I can realistically see being better.

I've been thinking about it some more and I really think it's that the musical selections from My Fair Lady aren't the ones that show the fiery side of Eliza's personality. It looks more like someone just told her it was a modern version of Cinderella. (Which it is, but without the rebellion & street-side of Eliza, you lose all the fun).

You Young's IG updates with Anna S & Anna T https://twitter.com/lynnneposts/status/1034695829741690880
There was also an update of Anna T a few days ago where she was calling You "the sweetest korean girl" https://twitter.com/magicaleggrolls/status/1033699747570176000

Glad they're getting along!

As far as programs go, we're talking about girls that are still juniors anyway! those are the years where the coaches try to understand their style & see what fits them the best. They're 13-14, it's not the end of the world if they don't fit the programs given to them. I found You's SP was fantastic, she looked confident and seemed in her element, same with Anna S's! but both their FS were not as good. You's being too empty & anna's being too packed, not showcasing her abilities the best like the SP that suited her like a glove.

Jihun To's both SP & FS really do showcase her best qualities in my opinion, no issues there, and i was watching Lee Haein's programs again since she's debuting at the JGP this week and it's obvious she's still a baby  but i think the programs are well constructed. I hope she'll not be too nervous about her first major competition and will perform well. She did win at Asian Trophy's Junior competition so i'm excited for her JGP debut.

Idk how i feel about Yelim's programs yet so i'll see at the GP. There was a video of her landing a 3lz-3lo at a random competition earlier this summer. I wonder if they're planning to add it somewhere in the future

I really like Lee Haein's SP. It's so beautiful. I hope she'll have a great JGP debut! she could become a favorite of mine :luv17:

it was beautiful indeed!! despite the small mistake on 3F (and she probably got some calls judging by the TES), she is just lovely, has very good SS (considering Korean standards ), musical and polished for her age, it was delight to watcht!

btw they seem to play songs from skaters' own country during their K&C :2thumbs:

the DJ is literally having an international music party :laugh2:

She most likely got an edge call on her flip, nothing surprising about that but I can't help feeling like her pcs score could have been a bit higher tho :scratch2: but JGP debut+ small fed!

i actually thought her PCS is pretty good (5th highest of the night) for a 1st jgp event, she got << on her 3T and < on her 3F thats why her score is so low

i hope her coaching team works on her jumps cause she definitely already has really beautiful skating for someone her age. She also seems to deal well with nerves already. Gyohee tho, completely choked:(. I hope she'll recover a bit at the FS.

I noticed that and thought it was a really nice touch! They should do that in all competitions!
I actually wondered if each skater requested a song prior to the competition. But maybe they just played some random song from the respective country. Either way, what a great idea! :luv17:
