2018 Olympic Figure Skating Free Dance

I'm shaking my head at some of the people saying that V/M won only because of Gabi's costume malfunction. That's a disservice to V/M's hardwork and performance.

Honestly, the final scores shouldn't have been that close. P/C were pretty much overscored in the SD, they were gifted high TES despite their twizzle bobbles. V/M had to work twice as hard to earn their score despite skating superiorly in the SD. And don't get me started on the FD scores. All season long V/M were marked harshly but I'm glad they were finally given a well-deserved score by the judges.

hmmmm ... so how do you explain the thunderous applause given to V/M (versus the enthusiastic applause given to P/C)? The arena certainly was not filled with Canadians - in fact probably <10%. So how do you account for the reaction from the other 90% of skating fans in that audience (representing countries from all over the world?)

When the audience broke into rapturous applause right after the end of V/M FD performance, the sportscaster for SBS(South Korea) said, "the audience already decides who the winners are."

Yes, indeed.

Rain--you are not alone about Chock and Bates FD. I LOVE it and so do a lot of my friends. I was devastated for them and wish we could have seen where it would have landed them in the mix. I hope they skate well at Worlds.

The fall looked really painful. I wondered for a second whether they were going to continue. Thankfully, they seemed largely unhurt and carried on.

Actually I thought not just with dance but with all the skating disciplines there was canned applause. There was another skating event where it was more obvious but I don't remember which one.

I love this FD, and I thought they skated it beautifully barring the fall. Hoping to see it performed perfectly in Milan LIVE :D

I can confidently say that V/M's "artistry" is very forced and contrived. This is sooooo evident in their attempt at Latin especially in the opening moves of their SD and the pause in their no-touch sequence.
Their "renowned" hip-hip chin-chin was charismatic but awkward and....for the lack of a better word- contrived.
They can definitely sell a program sure. They know how to conceal their lack of movement with musically times twizzles and over-dramtic faces. The numbers and levels aligned for them, yes.

Papadakis/Cizeron just brought what is beautiful in classical dance into a very aesthetically-challenged sport. There is just something balanced and....just right with their movement, choreo, flow. While I find V/Ms choereo to be bombastic but akward and a many points expected.

At the end of the day there are people who are content with tear-jerking corny inspirational performances from America's Got Talent/Britain's Got Talent or pizzazz of Broadway. And there are people who see more value in modernized Classic ballet.

Taste is dead.

V/M can do classical ballet very well. Have you seen their Valse Triste program? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FzpD15nx348&t=162s It is one of my favs. If you give V/M Moonlight Sonata, they will perform the heck out of it as well. On the other hand, I do not think P/C can perform the heck out of Moulin Rouge. Their short program proved to me their lack of versatility. P/C have amazing flow in their edges, but it's not that much superior than Tessa and Scott's skating skills. Another brilliant aspect of VM's skating is the way Scott presents Tessa and vice versa. She takes care of him just as much as he takes care of her....It's like they both equally project their bodies to each other on ice. P/C are brilliant skaters, but they lack charisma.

I also think Cizeron shows too much bare chest for my liking, lol.....

Soucisse and Firus are exactly the same age as P/C. They are still even getting things like two deductions for separation violations at 4cc. They aren't coming for anyone.

Not an accurate statement. It has been there only 2 point deduction with that free skate. It happened once at 4cc on a choreographic twizzle that no other caller has called. They have been skating together for 18 months. Let's have a open mind here and allow them some time. Or should they just quit now in your opinion?

I don't believe a team that has failed to even to go to a worlds event by the age of 22/23 is going to suddenly rise and take on a team that won worlds at 19/20, and have the best skating skills and components of any team in the World at present. I like them; I think they can improve. There were issues with that freedance at 4cc that extended beyond the choreographic twizzles and there was at least one separation at another point in the programme (the second step sequence, i believe). Are they going to challenge Papadakis and Cizeron? In my opinion, no. Just like Piper and Paul are not likely to suddenly rise- they've reached pretty much their limit and plateaued. Could Firus Soucisse medal at a Worlds or Grand Prix? Probably.

The age they are is accurate; and so is the statement that they got two separation violations at 4cc. If you disagree with my opinion on what that means, then you disagree. But my statement was fully factually accurate.

Wow, I guess millions of people, including myself, who enjoyed and were moved by V/M's performance have no taste.

Look, I get we all have skaters that we love and that we don't prefer but this just sounds like bitterness and sour grapes over a team that you don't like. Isn't artistry subjective in the first place? I don't find V/M contrived or over-dramatic at all. What I see is versatility to work with different genres and musicality. They are able to play roles with perfection, and possess an intimacy that captures the audience (and also many teams strive to emulate). Even though I don't agree with your description of P/C's artistry, I myself understand that it's subjective.

Ironically it's the first program by Chock and Bates that I have become a fan of (ironically because i hate this song in my guts). To think Olympic bronze was within their reach :sad21:
My mother also liked them best of all the American teams.

.........

Am I wrong to say that it's what the user is basically implying? That those who prefer certain teams' programs that supposedly equate to tear-jerking corny performances have no taste? Because that's what it sounds like and hence my reply.

But anyways, we can agree to disagree about V/M.

We can also agree to disagree on their fans! :)

Well-seasoned organic gourmet burger, loaded with veggies, and sweet potato fries. Sounds damn good to me.
Actually a compliment from you. Anway, the burger and fries team's artistry is more contrived than the team with the woman who can't even match leg lines with her partner and then gets dragged around by him.

2015 called and wants its obsolete arguments against P/C back.

The Germans and the Spanish are my ones to watch in the next 4 years. As much as I liked Sara with Adria, I think her partnership with Khaliavin is very fortunate, they were much sharper than expected. And Kavita&Joti are such a breath of fresh air (doesn't hurt that she's cute as a button). I also enjoyed the Japanese and from the more well known couples, super impressed by Guignard/Fabri and Gilles/Poirier.

Sara oozes confidence again like she did in Sochi but nowadays she's even stronger skater and performer than back then. I think her partnership with Kirill already have gelled, I was quite impressed by their sharpness throughout, there was no big errors finally and I think it allowed them to present their programs with abandon. Technically there was more quality than I've seen them doing - fully deserved PB I'd say. I believe they are destined to do achieve some remarkable things. Polish Eurosport commentators were praising them, one of them pointed out sophisticated arms movements of Hurtado that complimented music to the boot in Free Skate.
