2018 Olympic Figure Skating Ladies FS

Eteri and Med were the two that turned ladies FS that way. Now they've just lost control of the monster they unleashed.

And please, people have been whining about Med's lack of artistry and programs being too "technical" for the last 3 years. Now that she's lost, everyone's trying to rewrite the narrative into MEd being an amazing artist.

Med got beaten at her own game, that's what happened.

I don't think that Med improved "overnight" but she has improved greatly over the past year and a half, even with the injury. She head's and shoulders above Alina which is why I think I'm having such a hard time swallowing this.

I'm a bit worried about the reception Zagitova is going to get, and wondering if the Russian fans are going to send her hate mail given she snatched the gold at the very last second.

They usually give it to the superior technical skater at the Olympics. This forum would've probably melted down, but they would've given a clean Nathan the OGM over a clean Hanyu or Javi imo (justified or not).

Might be true for ladies but not the men. History tells a different story for them.

I really don't understand judge fetish with young girls in ladies skating, they are willing to go with veteran in other discipline but in ladies they always prefer younger fresher girls: Tara, Sarah, Adelina......

It's not surprising though. Society almost always prefers the younger girls; I mean look at the Oscar for Best Actress when was the last time a veteran won over a young ingenue? When given a chance to vote for the young pretty girl, almost everyone does it...

I will say it again. Evgenia's skating improved so much after Alina's series of victories. It's finally and definitely more true for me (despite annoying miming) than her previous skating. That was amazingly beautiful!

She scared her. I think she improved her interpretation skills when she finally saw she was in danger.

Not to say that she is the kind of person who would be lax because she didn't have to worry too much. She isn't. But the pace of development, over the past two years as WC, has been quite slow. Unfortunately, it was, in my opinion, too late.

Zagitova was the catalyst.

I really do agree that Med lacks artistry. Yet another problem with the system - Med is apparently a better artist than Satoko or Carolina. But I also think she's way better artistically than Zagitova and it's an absolute farce that the PCS is just arbitrarily handed out to the point where it can't make a difference.

I don't think anyone has to worry about Russian fans celebrating Alina. This is their ONLY gold medal of a very tough Olympics for them. She's going to be a megastar in Russia.

The scoring system and judging standards have changed dramatically since 2010 to more or less assure that tbh.

Ugh, this is also why I feel sorry for Alina (and why I suspect she has to hide her tears of joy). Probably most of Russia, esp the serious figure skating fans are rooting for Zhenya. They know her and love her, whereas Alina is still sort of the new kid. It's gotta be tough dethroning the queen. Just like if Shoma beat Yuzuru at Olympics, I guarantee you the Yuzu fans (including myself) would be out for blood... I hope Alina's team, and her fellow Russians celebrate her victory appropriately and don't deny her moment in the glory just because they are upset for Zhenya. That wouldn't be fair for Alina either.

She handled it with far more grace than others in past similar situations. Tara's shrieks still haunt me and twitter keeps comparing tonight to her and Michelle, which I get but is insulting to Alina and maybe overly flattering to Zhenya.

I am so sad for Zhenya but still happy for Alina.

I get why Alina won but I personally would have put Evgenia ahead of her -- just like how I would have put Michelle ahead of Tara in 1998. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The performance of the night for me was Kaetlyn. Maybe it comes from her training on a mall ice rink but she seems to be one of the only current skaters who actually enjoys performing in front of a crowd. Also her jumps were big and had great flow today.

I know right now emotions are high, but I hope those who think Zagitova deserved her win don't put down Medvedeva for things that they believe she does poorly. Instead of putting Evgenia down, let's put Alina up!!! Both girls did super well today.

Someone I know says its creepy....not sure exactly what he meant. I didn't watch because I knew I didn't want to see med cry and watch satoko not medal.

Medvedeva has been overscored for years and now she's got a taste of her own medicine. She still got Silver over ladies who were more deserving of PCs and who also executed jumps better, so I don't really feel sorry for her. The judging is not her fault but well, it's unfair and insulting to her to say she deserved Gold just out of pity. Her repetitive miming and flutzes shouldn't win OGM against Alina's clear technical superiority- (though I still believe the latter was also overscored in PCs).

Alina’s PCS are more insane than any overscoring Evgenia has received imo.
