2018 Olympic Figure Skating Ladies FS

Let’s get some little comparison. We often do compare the “former champion” and new champion, don’t we?

Zagitova (2018) vs Sotnikova (2014)

LOL

Say what you want re backloading, this Olympics has shown an interesting contrast between men’s vs ladies re progression.

Men - war of attrition, AGAIN. Thanks to the Quad Factor, we had another Splatfest!!! - and a guy like Adam, who barely made it out of the USA, cracked the top 10 with jumps a junior female could do and with a “play it safe” attitude.
And hey, props to him - it worked. Men’s medals are decided by who messes up the least.

Ladies - The Art Is Gone (TM), probably stolen by Russian hackers.... ;)...the top ladies (bar some) can do their thing without completely falling apart (although admittedly, it was a bit worrying to see some of the crash-and-burns, particularly the Americans :( ) - BUT because they do what they CAN strategically to maximise points, as opposed to doing what they HOPE they MIGHT be able to maybe kinda land if it’s their lucky day, everyone watching throws tantrums and wants to return to the 90’s. Or just start declaring winners based on the I Like That Better (TM) COP.

Interesting.

It isn't only a jumping contest either.

Yeah, I gathered that by the way in which points were awarded for, you know, all the other elements.

Unfortunately a lot of people consider footwork etc to be worthless.
Hopefully they learn to appreciate not only elements like a good spin, good StSq, but also an athlete who can be fit enough to jump after smashing out every other element brilliantly.

Congrats Kaetlyn for finally landing the 3Lo in the second half. I knew she'd win Bronze when she did that.

Congrats to two OAR's as well.

Zhenya, I feel so heartbroken for you.

You may not have gotten gold, but your performance tonight will always be in my heart. Every jump superb, flawless (cmon guys, please let us ignore that one maybe-flutz for one tiny frozen moment in time). GOE through the roof. Interpretation - feels like such a clumsy word, doesn’t it? You can hardly call Zhenya’s skating an interpretation of Anna Karenina when it’s somehow so different, as if you added another dimension to the story. I love the way Caro flows across the ice and how Osmund irresistibly tempts you into her program and how Satton’s every movement is in perfect harmony with everything else, but there is something about you, Zhenya, that I have never seen and doubt I will ever see again. Maybe it’s the way your every program tells a story, or how every moment in your program is filled with these tiny details that turn a good program into an interpretative masterpiece.

Every day, training endlessly for hours, putting heart and soul and something more as well into every moment, while in front of your eyes a young skater almost effortless surpasses you, not by skill but by gaming the system. Years and years of hard work that is the behind-the-scenes preparation for the magic that takes place during your programs. And all for nought? Maybe there is something poetic in how Yuna Kim also lost the battle between true artistry and true system manipulation. Everyone knows that Yuna will always be the real champion of Sochi. Zhenya, for me at least, you will always be the real champion of Pyeongchang.

I saw a clip of you trying out Alina’s 3Lz3Lo in practice… oh Zhenya! You thought that you could beat everyone by just being your perfect self, but you realized that you could not beat Alina. That 3Lz3Lo… you didn’t end up landing that combo, at least not that time. You fell, and banged the wall, and skated away for another try. But maybe you also realized that you couldn’t be exactly like Alina either. What point would there be anyway, to have two clones executing the same program in two different disguises. Backloading, tano, rippon…

Maybe Alina knows this too. And in the end, when she was crying in that box, maybe some of her tears might have been for you too.

I love what you said, especially the last sentence.

Eteri and Med were the two that turned ladies FS that way. Now they've just lost control of the monster they unleashed.

And please, people have been whining about Med's lack of artistry and her programs being too "technical" and crammed with stupid mime movements for the last 3 years. Now that she's lost, everyone's trying to rewrite the narrative into Med being an amazing artist who wuzrobbed.

Med got beaten at her own game, that's what happened.

I think people should stop using word "performance" during the Olympic year. It has been proven every cycle that one becomes Olympic champion by winning TES. PCS can keep you in the mix but when all is said and done, it is the one who takes the most risks and nails it comes on top. Alina took it and did it. Medvedeva may have won the PCS but she made the same mistake Yuna did, assuming that PCS can help her sail through. Said that I wish ISU were more consistent and do not fool these skaters throughout the whole Olympic cycle by handing the wins based on PCS and then crash those athletes with reality in the Olympic year.
Said all that I think the placements are correct based on TES. I do not care about PCS.
Congratulations to everyone.

Got to wonder how the podium would have looked if Evgenia and Alina haven't been overscored in PCS during their entire senior careers. The PCS distance between them and skaters like Kaetlyn and Satoko definitely shouldn't have been that large (Evgenia > Kaetlyn by 2 and Alina > Satoko by 4), and while Evgenia wasn't called for her flutz today, Kaetlyn and Kaori were both called (an ! and e respectively). Only 7 points currently separate Kaetlyn and Evgenia, after all...

I feel like if we score PCS correctly Alina probably still would have won due to the TES rules, but it'd have been close, and it'd have depended on whether we think it's fair to award her those PCS scores when she's a first year senior who hasn't even been to worlds.

I usually peg her at 68 PCS. So, yes, Alina would have won.

so true. Ladies PCS was ridiculous for the past quad.

Still, congratulations to Alina for holding it together. She has great jumping technique (doesn't flutz) and deserve all her GOE and Tech mark. Evgenia just can't compete with that, even though she may be artistically a little better .

I'm happy for Dabin Choi that was 7th. I noticed her during one of the Challengers at the beginning of the season and really enjoyed her.

Considering Alina had a 75 in the FS... that decreases the gap between her and Kaetlyn to 1.5 points... and shouldn't we knock off a point or two from her SP PCS as well, considering she had the third highest PCS there after Evgenia and Carolina? :scratch3:

Yeah, you should. Keep knocking.

I think everyone in the top 3 gets decreased by around 20 points. So positions are the same, IMO.

Wow what a great event!!

Alina is a stunning figure on the ice - and the save on the loop combo glorious! For me it in fact even further amplified the suspense she already creates with the backload - and not sure she could have timed it better with the music - fantastic "glitch" that worked in her favor! Lovely carriage and spectacular flow and smoothness on those jumps!

Evgenia was clutch as well... however the airiness and floaty glide quality that distinguished her skating is ever so slightly reduced - unfortunately that quality affects pretty much every element in her program. Although both she and Alina looked a bit tentative... effort is more apparent with evgenia and that for me sealed the deal given the technical margin between the two. Extraordinary effort tho! Great chanpion.

Now as far as tabloid stuff goes:

There's lots of ways to project sensational narratives here... one that comes up between the lines of lots of these posts:

Weird twist of karma here - medvedeva usurped the Olympic darling lipnitskaya in the red coat only to have it happen to her by a new 15 years old darling in a red tutu... again just a way of spinning things not really saying this is part of reality...but tragic in the way of Greek theatre...

Anyway... wonder if some of the negative feelings (at least on this board) towards evgenia come from hardcore yulia fans cheering on their fates of fury... lol

Anyhow, very entertaining competition result was really up in the air until the final moment... whew
