2018 Olympic Figure Skating Mens SP

Is it just possible that Nathan peaked too early in the season? A shame he couldnt peak here at the Olympics but I am just throwing some reasons out there. His last two poor performances are quite alarming and worrying.

I was always worried about Nathan burning himself out when reading about his practices...it is basically one quad after another and more than double what the other top skaters are doing. Shoma also go crazy practising his quads but he has his pre-rotation weird landing technique going for him. Boyang does the complete opposite and just do his big elements once and maybe repeat it once if it was not perfect.

Glad that the SP was overall less messy than the team SP, but I’m still gutted for Nathan. What a disappointment for him.

so eurosport was not showing mens short program at all ? it was sheduled to be live in the morning, and I had nothing on ESP1....

I almost feel like the russian skaters have a similar attitude to the karolyis in gymnastics - with the whole "next one up attitude" if one falters. Russian girls are great, but I don't like it so much when we get these one hit wonders like Arakawaa, or Sarah Hughes or even Tara who basically had one hit or else were like Tara and were dominant for a season or two then disappear. That's what's been going on with the russian ladies, though EM is to some extent an exception in that she has lasted for a good 3 seasons.

Hanyu's performance was really a great olympic moment for japan in general since i know he is so loved there. I wonder what the skate order will be for long. I don't think Nathan would have done as bad (though i still think he would be off and not win a medal) if he had skated first before hanyu. He never had to deal with the whole stadium erupting over a skater with such a high score. Its concerning he place 6th at worlds too since it indicates a pattern where someone can't perform under pressure. For some of the people who choked like Mao it was more an anomly and they won world titles and even for her an olympic medal before an episode when they did not do as well. But except for GPF we have not seen Nathan compete head to head with everyone and win. And even there he was not facing Hanyu or Javi. He's never beaten them head to head with everyone all in one competition. Much like Carolina in Torino and Chan in Vancouver, the expectations by the media did not fit in with reality - Mao or Hanyu and Yuna deserved to be hyped but nothing that Nathan really did indicated he should have been hyped as much as he was.

I watched it on the player and the uncles were back commenting, thank the heavens! Great commentary.

Maybe Adam Rippon can write a recommendation letter. Adam was Orser's ex-student. Brian Orser would love to learn the secrets of the 4Lz and 4F.

Brian already has a preteen who can jump all the quads. Hes Russian but will skate for Canada when he is old enough.

Everyone's except Adam Rippon and maybe Nathan's. NBCSN showed them, but I don't have NBCSN.

AAAAAAnnnnnndddddd........NBC rabbit ears threw Patrick Chan under the bus, along with lots of scores.....
This is the worst covered Olys for poor people in many years.....
"We at NBC feel that you poor folks out there have no right to see the figure skating events......not even the top 12...and not even on late night, cause you have no bucks to spend on our advertisers so who cares about you anyway? Now go out there and earn more bucks to get high speed internet and and spend 600 bucks a year on Dish network.....slackers....."

Incidenatally did people read the article this week in NYT about Adam and his body image issues? Rafael actually had a quote in the article about "well I have to figure out how to get an elephant to jump." He admitted he realized his comments about weight were not good for the skaters and seems to have reformed. But I could not believe the quote about the elephants. And yet for it to be printed in the NYT - not even say it in private or think it but to say that out loud to a journalist.

Wow, that isn't nice. No offense to elephants.

He has mastery of the pure skating skills but his ability to perform, interpret, and move his whole body has never been on the same level. Nor are his transitions that amazing either. Boyang gave the better performance tonight, the other components can go to Chan, but it was nowhere close to a 10 point difference there. It's not like Boyang is skating with little speed or bad edges.

Exactly! I'm shocked that his PE is lower than Chan's and Rippon's! You can make a case for Rippon (I'd disagree), but Chan practically stops performing after he makes a mistake.
Boyang gave face during his SP, and felt the music, too. He felt and looked serious, which is a complete opposite from his personality. Delivered a good performance. Not perfect, but it deserved higher than Chan, at least!

I'd score him a point higher, maybe. Half a point higher for sure.

funny how everybody is wondering if Nathan should go to Orser or not.

What about Frank Carroll? He did after all get Evan to gold and Timothy to Bronze and neither had Nathan's talent ;)

or are we only allowed to suggest him when it comes to the ladies these days?

Seriously, look at the first line of the NYT article on Nathan : No men’s figure skater seems better positioned to win a gold medal at the Olympics than 18-year-old Nathan Chen

That's just not true. First of all I think he's 19 so that's not even right. It was just way too overhyped.

Well fake news.

Huh. I watched it on eurosport player too (at least I think, got the eurosport player channel via amazon prime) and there was not a word of commentary.
