I almost feel like the russian skaters have a similar attitude to the karolyis in gymnastics - with the whole "next one up attitude" if one falters. Russian girls are great, but I don't like it so much when we get these one hit wonders like Arakawaa, or Sarah Hughes or even Tara who basically had one hit or else were like Tara and were dominant for a season or two then disappear. That's what's been going on with the russian ladies, though EM is to some extent an exception in that she has lasted for a good 3 seasons.
Hanyu's performance was really a great olympic moment for japan in general since i know he is so loved there. I wonder what the skate order will be for long. I don't think Nathan would have done as bad (though i still think he would be off and not win a medal) if he had skated first before hanyu. He never had to deal with the whole stadium erupting over a skater with such a high score. Its concerning he place 6th at worlds too since it indicates a pattern where someone can't perform under pressure. For some of the people who choked like Mao it was more an anomly and they won world titles and even for her an olympic medal before an episode when they did not do as well. But except for GPF we have not seen Nathan compete head to head with everyone and win. And even there he was not facing Hanyu or Javi. He's never beaten them head to head with everyone all in one competition. Much like Carolina in Torino and Chan in Vancouver, the expectations by the media did not fit in with reality - Mao or Hanyu and Yuna deserved to be hyped but nothing that Nathan really did indicated he should have been hyped as much as he was.
