2018 Olympic Figure Skating Pairs SP

I mean the judges keep waxing poetics about wanting to see an artistic and emotional vision to the program, a deep connection between the partners, and then gave out those PCS to T/M? Their IN CO Tr should all be 0.5-1.0 below the rest of the top 7.

Definity! Wrong scores.

There is a real big chance for the Gold.

They were so slow in the Step Sequence, too!

MY RANKING:
1. Sui/Han 82
2. Tarasova/Morosov 80
3. Savchenko/Massot 77
4. Yu/Zhang 77
5. James/Cipres 75
6. Zabaiiko/Enbert 75
7. Della Monica/Guarise 73
8. Marchei/Hotarek 73
9. Duhamel/Radford 73
10. Asthakova/Rogonov 72

Happy for Duskova/Bidar, Yu/Zhang, and Sui/Han.
Sad for Savchenko/Massot, Peng/Jin, and Kiefer/Ziegler.
Just woke up (the sun is about to rise where I'm at) and checked the results and these are my exact thoughts. Oh, and also happy for Ryom/Kim. The SP is fab and I'm glad they skated it well.

But I WANT ALJONA TO GET HER GOLD  but I also want everybody to skate clean(ish) in the free and I know these two wishes are mutually exclusive (or should you say 'incompatible'? My English brain hasn't properly woken up yet)

If you read Ice Network, they have an interesting article about how Pairs is uhm, "learning" (aka stealing) from Ice Dance:
http://web.icenetwork.com/news/2018/02/12/266348666/dance-infused-pairs-programs-becoming-the-norm

And now Pairs is one of the two most exciting disciplines in skating (betcha can't guess what I think the other one is!).

Coincidence?

I think not.

You can see it especially in the step sequences this year, as in, the pairs are actually doing something more than a throwaway. Not for nothing has Marie-France Dubreuil (ice dance coach) choreographed for some of the pairs this season. Now the pairs just need to take lessons from the dancers on doing pair spins that don't move at a painful crawl...

Yep, starting from maybe two seasons ago, spreading from the top teams to the rest. We see more and more face to face holds and intricate turns combined in interesting ways.

Are you talking about T/M or D/R? I'm confused because despite their problems T/M have better lines (objectively) and are more aesthetically pleasing (subjectively) than D/R.

Never a D/R fan but just watched their programs again and gotta say D/R had much more expressive, to-the-music arm and upper body movements than T/M who were sort of in an exercise mode.

Again I want to point out that there was no Russian judge or technical specialist in this event. In fact there wasn't even a single judge from former Soviet Union and only one judge from Eastern Europe.

How DARE you interrupt all the baseless sniping by presenting actual FACTS.

I notice you don’t deny the presence of the Martian judge. You know - the RED planet.

Exactly. T/M don't convey any expression or emotion to me. It's just them doing big tricks nicely. They are really good but their skating is not what I want to see winning the OGM if S/H or S/M skate decently.

The judging here was kind of bad. They ended up handcuffing themselves. Unfairly Duhamel and Radford and well the top four teams should have been ahead by more. Now anyone can odium from basically 9th if not 10th up. Exciting yes but when the gave those high scores to Korea and CZE I knew the second and third Canadians and Knerims were in trouble. There should have been a greater spread. Yes, this interesting and second tier teams benefitted ie the Italians and second tier Russians but this really is a mess. Great skating but unforutantely the judging trapped themselves.

Do we need a Russian judge on the panel to prove incompetent scoring? They are simply being over-rewarded for being the top Russian pair.

You actually see some of them include twizzles now in the footwork, which was totally unheard of before. I for one love the change. It adds so much character to the programs.

This ice dance influence discussion reminds me of what Meagan said when she explained why they switched from Muse to Adele. Don't remember what interview it was or her exact words, but she basically said that the pairs at the top of the Worlds podium tend to lead the way to the next season and set the standard, so after Helsinki with Sui/Han & S/M at the top the current trend is not about upping the technical ante, it's about having that emotional connection and well choreographed programs. And D/R thought bringing their Adele FS back would better fit the current pairs landscape than them skating to Muse.

Some of them really try, but yeah, still too many programs ending in a painfully slow and seemingly never-ending pair spin...

ALIONA IS GOING FOR BROKE...If she does all those elements cleanly she very well could catch up to Sui/Han, but more likely she will fall =(

This was my first time really watching a pairs event and wow, what an impressive show. All of the skaters were pretty great. I'm happy Sui/Han is first, but I'm also sad for Savchenko. If only NBC bothered to show more of the skates.
