2018 Olympic Figure Skating Team Event Day 1

Chan just doesn't have anymore

Chan really does not look like he is ready or cares. I am sorry; he may want to say he wants to do things on his own terms ie his moves and coaching decision but it didn't work in Sochi and it hasn't worked at worlds for the last two season and he looks worse now. He chose to to do two programs - neither has been skated well at all this season and everyoen else is doing at least one repeat program to make it easier to emote and perform. He dummied or lowered his jumps and he still can't skate and the falls or mistakes ruin his artistry. That being said Keegan is far too great a risk for the long program (the only saving grace is the worst he can do is fifth). Chan is lucky everyone sucked tonight but really this is inexcusable and embarassing. I hoped hewould be read and surprise us but from the first practice I knew it. He's finished. he moved on. He will get an oly team medal but mentally he lost it. First he gave up on the quad sal. Then the Quad toe lost consistency and the triple axel is totally gone. He clearly was having issues and not training; we don't know what happened with Zueva - maybe he was intimidated by the next oly great one - Nathan Chen. Nathan will come back and at the very least win a medal.Chan is looking kind of like Elvis in his last olympics - washed up has been. I so didn't want to say it but clearly his practices suck. Canadian nats sucked. I so wanted to love his skating but i am so so disappointed. My fingers are crossed but realistically Chan is a disaster itis amazing he got third and Canada is still in the lead.

TAT hates a canadian pair and criticize them every time she sees them. this time she said "there was no program. just a number of clean elements executed to a slow music"

Honestly, You could apply that remark to the vast majority of FS programs
if you wanted to put someone down, She's just being a hater

Bradie beat Gabby in Skate America. She could easy do so again due to her BV and because she rarely URs. I agree that Sakamoto is likely to beat Bradie but the ice is slipperly and it is better to aim for 8/9 points than to settle for 7 or 6. We just saw in the men's event that predictions are meaningless anyway so there is really no point in arguing about scores. But, I really think all the US dance teams deserve medals and only one of them has a realistic chance of getting one in the individual event. So, they should have another dance team perform the long program. They will all likely get 9 points.

Bradie beat Gabby with her crappy FS from this season. Gabby switched to her old FS that just won her national and a world bronze last year. Gabby then delivered another clean performance weeks later at WTT. Gabby will be tough to beat.

Of course after the Euphoria of achieving team Olympic gold, Gabby may slip up in the individual competition...

Gabby also had surgery in the off-season. She's just get back to her prior form.

There were other issues at work with Julia. Coaches like that will make you a champion or they will drive you into the ground. Anyway, the point is really that the dance teams deserve a medal. It is sad if two don't get that chance.

Are we really again blaming Eteri for Julia’s meltdown in Sochi? I thought we got past that.

I have to disagree, you may think they are not overscored but look at the GOEs they are getting. Its true that their jumps are harder but should not automatically get them good GOEs. That throw was so ugly position wise, has no distance plus no height. The rest of their elements are very inferior to other teams. A lot lower rank teams have superior elements than team but never get the GOEs D/R are getting

Did you look at the protocols because I don't think their GOE's are that high? The BV is higher than all other teams but they got negative GOE on their lutzes and mostly 1's on their throw as compared to T/M who got all 2/3. I agree that some of their elements are sloppy. But, I think that today's scores were within reason. I also think the GOE's that T/M got are justified their elements are great! I think that what some of us think they are lacking is the PE/ Composition and Intrepretation of music mark. The programs they skate to are not good enough. They are too good for these programs and because the programs don't suit them their execution of them is lackluster.

No offense but TAT hates Megan because she calls out athletes who dope. Megan's SS aren't great but their program is wonderfully constructed. It suits them.

Meghan also has terrible lines. I imagine that bothers TAT more than anything.

Are we really again blaming Eteri for Julia’s meltdown in Sochi? I thought we got past that.

I mean, it happened like 2 weeks after her great team event? Suddenly Eteri became an unbearable menace? It's just ridiculous. Most obvious candidate explanation is just the nerves of being suddenly thrusted into so much spotlight post-team event.

It's not like I trying to protect TAT since I'm not a big fan of her, but TAT never liked Megan. She critisized her harshly even in Moscow Worlds. And TAT loves Aliona to death and wants her to get gold, so... And I'm with Tarasova this time.

I want Aliona to win too. No argument with TAT on that!

I agree Patrick had no motivation for this season, and would have preferred to retire. I assume Skate Canada lobbied him hard to continue. It’s sad to see, but I don’t think it’s something he can help.

I think so too. Suddenly she was suppose to skate two much gold medal programs just after finishing two programs. If she split them, the pressure would’ve been lower.

Perhaps undeservedly, but the music will help Gabby in the PCS department. Cinderella vs Gershwin - c'mon. I know it's been belabored so much on here, but it's worth repeating, Cinderella plays into every bad stereotype of "American Figure Skater" and lacks the gravitas of a serious contender. I mean, Gracie went the American Ice Princess route in 2014 - but at least she used Tchaikovsky!

Meghan also has terrible lines.

She has improved a lot though. Look at her now compared to two years ago. I am not a huge fan of this team but I like how determined they are to always get better. I think their desire to improve should be rewarded.

Gabby also had surgery in the off-season. She's just get back to her prior form.

Yeah I was going to say. Not only that but it was an unplanned emergency surgery that sidelined her for part of the summer. The way she's skating now, post nationals, she's a major contender that can't be overlooked.

Oh, it is terrible. I don't deny that. Which is why I don't think she has chance at an individual medal. However, just be consistent in the free skate can help your team to get a higher score because other falter.

she said that after S/M skate.
she also said that aliona's program is a masterpiece, but somehow canadians will be ahead of her, ano no one shouldn't be close to aliona in PCS (after that grishin reminded her that chinese pair is also wonderful and she agreed with him)
but yes, TAT is definitely a hater of awful programs

I wasn't *blaming* Eteri. But, Julia's issues are well documented. She was dealing with more than just the pressure of performing in the team even. Eteri is the perfect coach for strong-willed girls like Medvedeva. She is not the perfect coach for everyone. (no Coach is perfect for everyone) For the record, I think any coach who can produce such consistency in most of her female skaters is a marvel. I don't dislike Eteri.

Everyone wants "unbiased" commentators that agree with every opinion they hold :)
