2018 Olympic Figure Skating Team Event Day 1

i'm curious, what do you think about canadian pair PCS?
I didn't think about it actually. [emoji23] Was it high? Duhamel's expression in the last minute is really all wrong, in my opinion! But overall, I think their program, choreo, performance are much better than T/M's. Neither are my favorites by any stretch, but maybe I prefer watching T/M though because they baffle me in a pleasant way. I really like Zhenya and the elements are totally glorious. I wish they had better programs. I can't for the life of me understand why they don't.

T/M needs to skate the free for Russia to secure that 10 points because if they use Z/E they can still be beaten by Canada’s no 2. Pair and the Knierems. Even the italian pairs.

If T\M aren't chosen to skate the free then OAR are saying "we don't want a shot at Gold or Silver"

Nathan's haircut and costume are complete downgrades from earlier in the season. Cannot believe how bad those Vera Wang designs look.

The silky shirts looked chic and light, and with the curls made him look like a young artist. This current look is so heavy and without any statement.

It seriously bothers me waaay more then it should lol! I wasn’t shocked to see Patrick and Mikhail make jumping mistakes but Nathan’s were truly shocking. Poor thing. Hope he can regroup. I’m just really happy for Israel! Although I didn’t even get to see it since NBC decided to show a dramatic re-enactment of Nathan Chen’s elementary school years instead an actual competitor who turned out to be the second place finisher...if that ain’t the most NBC thing ever I don’t know what is🙄🙄

Wow, Tarasova and Morosov were incredible. Perhaps not the most creative artistry, but if they skate like that, their PCS (and TES) will be pretty much the same as S/H and S/M.

Savchenko and Massot were also amazing, but I think this is a reminder that despite perfect performances at GPF, they are not the most consistent pair and anything can happen with them. Sui and Han are still more consistent, and my odds on prediction to win. I still think S/M's throw technique needs improvement. When they are perfect, though, they can't be beaten.

Other pairs were kind of meh. Duhamel and Radford were good with a solid program, though their elements pale in comparison to T/M. Too bad about Yu/Jin and James/Cipres, both pairs could have also scored in the 75 range if they were clean. Scimeca and Knierim were also better than expected on the SBS.

I will say, despite the debacle for Russia in mens, I still think it is neck and neck between them and Canada, with the US a distant third. Messing prob won't beat Aliev in the free, D/R or whoever will probably place lower than T/V...say Russia gains 2 points there in total. Dance short and long CAN will gain 4 points over Russia (assuming they don't put in W/P). And then there is Ladies. Russia will win both segments, Katelyn and Gabby may finish between 2nd and 5th. Say Katelyn 3rd in short and Gabby 3rd in long. Then canada wins by 1 overall.

Yes, I wonder about this too. They really are lovely skaters but their programs always leave so much to be desired. I don't think the Canadians were overscored at all. They really performed well and their program is better and more difficult and while their SS are not as good their PCS definitely reflected that (two points lower than the Russians and Germans)

I've seen too many competitions with surprising results to think any position is fixed. Gabby can easily miss a few elements in long program, and Kaori no longer has a big PCS advantage over Bradie now that Bradie is US #1. I think Bradie could be as high as #2 in team long. It's much less of a stretch than Bychenko being #2!

She could. But that would wreck her for the FS. I know no one but me believes she a dark horse for a bronze, but humor me. She’s better off being rested so she can fight for that ironic 4th place spot the US is becoming known for. It will help her a lot at worlds.

Who can repeat the best skate twice?? I cannot see any other meaning for the Team event as to ruin someone's chances for the medal. I want to be wrong!

Can someone tell me if anyone said or knows where Paul P and Piper G were? They weren't sitting with Team Canada in the cheering section??

TAT hates a canadian pair and criticize them every time she sees them. this time she said "there was no program. just a number of clean elements executed to a slow music"
and i kind of agree with her.
in my opinion T/M are not deserving aliona's or sui/han PCS, they should be lower by a couple of points. but canadian pair shouldn't even be on a second chinese pair PCS territory. it's intresting that they are so loved on this forum

They have made major mistakes and been beaten by the other two American teams in the last two competitions in the long. I don't think they are as safe of a bet as you think. In terms of ladies, I would say the field is much more likely to move around because other than Medvedeva none of the other ladies are consistent. I think Katelyn is likely to do well in the short program but Bradie could (due to much high BV) place ahead of Daleman in the long. Carolina Kostner is a beautiful skater (my favorite) but she could falter too. Sakamoto is likely to do well in the long but it is never guarenteed. Having a steady US lady could make a real difference. I think all the US dance teams are likely to be in 2nd place. They all qualified for the Grand Prix Final ahead of the Russian team. They all beat the Italian team in the Grand Prix final. The technical panel is very neutral for the dance event this time and so the Russians and Italians will likely have level programs, as they did at Europeans. The American teams are , generally, much more precise technically. Plus, really the dance teams deserve a medal much more than Karen Chen or Mirai Nagasu. They all top 5 in the world.

Carolina isn’t doing the FS. Kaori is doing the Fzs and already beat Bradie. Bradie will receive much lower PCS scores than Kaori because Kaori just won 4CC. Gabby is doing her FS from last year and has the PCS to hold off Bradie. She may improve by one spot, but that’s iffy. And it will weaken her for the FS. There is no risk in playing just one dance team. Davis/White recovered and won. But Julia didn’t.

She could. But that would wreck her for the FS. I know no one but me believes she a dark horse for a bronze, but humor me. She’s better off being rested so she can fight for that ironic 4th place spot the US is becoming known for. It will help her a lot at worlds.

I don't think this team event will exhaust anyone physically. All the skaters do several program runthroughs everyday. This is just like a regular runthrough with the added bonus of preparing you for the individual. So, if someone is exhausted it will be mental exhaustion. However, Bradie seems very calm. I don't think she is given to mental exhaustion. I think her chances of an individual medal are slim so she should fight to get the best possible medal in the team event. A clean team event would help her results in both the ladies competition here and at worlds because the more clean programs you perform the higher your PCS goes ( it should not work that way- but it does)

Totally random question - is Kostner already in town? I didn't see her in the box and haven't heard practice reports from her. Tried a quick google to no avail so perhaps I can get an assist. It would seem weird if she wasn't there already, unless Russo is doing the team ...

Chan has to skate the long whether he's up to it or not. There's no way they're subbing in Messing. He'd be dead last.
