2018 Olympic Figure Skating Team Event Day 1

It started out with 10 countries, the bottom 5 gets dropped. The remaining 5 countries skate for the three medals. Like in any other skating competition, the bottom ones gets dropped and the top skaters skate for the medal..Just imagine, if last night was the real short fir men's, the skaters would have skated the same and what a disaster that would have been...lol.
Two quick points:
1) I agree with those who have speculated that the early competition hour seems to have an ill effect om the Men. (And why are they scheduled at that hour? I assume the fees paid the IOC from NBC so that the competition will air in prime-time in the US has an impact?)
2) Yes, Nathan tanked. I'm not sure how the event was aired around the world, but in the US, television cameras followed him mercilessly after he arrived at the arena... they hounded him... to the point of following him entering the rest room (in fact he first almost went into the ladies by accident... completely captured by the cameras). Then NBC interviewed him (before and after SP)... and almost always a camera as he stretched, warmed up, drank water. True, most elite skaters are filmed backstage, but the level to witch Nathan was scrutinized was almost abusive. I can see how this could easily have affected his focus and concentration.

the remaining 5 countries are not skating for the medals. in the team event pretty much everything is decided in the short. the free skate is completely meaningless in this format

Gold is out of reach anyway (& it was obvious when Ksenia is out) so who cares
Uhh.... S/K have had poor short programs all season. Their season's best would still have them behind the Germans yesterday.
In terms of FS, they only delivered at NHK, so if they had done the team FS that might have been iffy too. The Russian team's hopes were NOT riding on Stolbova/Klimov. I actually think their inclusion in the team event would have been detrimental to Russia since if they were put in the SP they (based on the season) probably would not have gotten the 10 points T/M got yesterday, and in the FS they're a wild card (and not a safe bet, based on their most recent performance at Euros and other frees throughout the season).

Congrats to Shoma, Alexei, Junhwan, and Matteo on their SPs -- especially to Junhwan for having a wonderful skate in front of his home crowd.

Completely correct. Russia's gold medal option was to have T/M and B/S do both events, Medvedeva skate the short (and Alina or Medvedeva free) and Kolyada not to bomb.

Sher doesn't have to beat her. Second in the short and third in the free for Osmond will be enough for team Canada.
No Yuzuru Hanyu, no Boyang Jin, no Javier Fernandez.

Yeah, it is a silly aspect of the team competition. Kolyada essentially pulled an Abbott and will still get an Olympic medal. Although at least Abbott actually executed one of his jumping passes. :sarcasm:
Two falls and a pop -- major errors on all 3 jumping passes -- a program that would have been 20th in the SP at Worlds last year.... and that gets you an Olympic medal?!?! Maybe even gold?!?! Sorry, but that's an absolute joke, as much as the 42.61 PCS it was given -- LMAO at two of the judges giving it a 9.00 for performance.
The PCS in this event were disgusting... Chan, Kolyada and Chen should have all had 2-3 points lower PCS than they got. :disapp:
I don't disagree too much with the standings though; maybe I would have had Yan in 5th, but he was messy and Cha and Rizzo DID go clean/close to clean, albeit with easier content.

Kaetlyn and Zhenya haven't even competed against each other since Worlds.
That is an interesting way to look at who claims gold(Ladies/Dance canceled out with Russia and Canada). It may come down to Men and Pairs Long. It will be interesting to see if the Canadians keep in D/R or put in Seguin/Bilodeau. I know D/R have the longevity but I'm not sure they have the consistency to have a clean LP. Eric particulary looks tired to me. And with the individual event in just a few days do they want to put all the cards on the table for the team event. S/B are on a come back and might be able to score in the top 3. They certainly have a chance to beat the Knierims and the Japanese pair (presuming they are in the top 5). If Patrick turns on the charm and lands a few jumps I think he might have a chance with components to be 1 or 2. All depends on who skates for the other countries. Adam, I don't think can beat Patrick. Shoma would certainly be the favorite unless Patrick is perfect. If Mikail/Elvis is in the building that will not be a threat to the Canadians. The analysts are having fun! Me, too!

The problem there is that it forces the better skaters to be used in the long, and the men may not prefer that because the individual event is a few days later. Maybe just having the SP be 1/3 of the score instead of 1/2 (unless it's already like that, I'm not sure).
I think they could maybe space out the points in the free a little, like may it more like 10-8-6-4-2.

Thanks to Bychenko, I've had Hava Nagila stuck in my head all day 
I'm so glad that he got to have this Olympic experience. As some have mentioned, it is true that the Team Event needs to work out some quirks, but it is also true that it gives people like him a chance to shine. Even with such a fine performance, he would probably be lost among others in the Men's discipline (at least to the casual viewers), but here, at the very start of the Games, with everyone all excited, with only 10 men in the Team Event, and, well, with 10 men who mostly went splat, to go out there and be in the spotlight with everyone watching him and perform like that... just as a human being, I'm happy he got that experience. Congrats, Bychenko! :agree: Hopefully this is only the beginning of a great Olympic journey
