2018 Olympic Figure Skating Team Event Day 3

Alina's program is working for me, much more than before because backloading was kinda new.
Someone tell Ashley that how you might win (and thus get an Olympic spot). It might not work for her, but it's athletically so demanding, too much even. I'm okay to see diversity in singles actually. Some backload, some don't...

If Alina could deliver a higher quality step sequence I wouldn't mind, but it's just mediocre. Her spins are good, but not great. The field movements are kinda pointless. It's hard to sit through for so long. If she had a really great opening and skating skills I could manage the wait, but it's hard when the jumps are her biggest strength *by far* and we have to wait so long for the goods.

Plus musicality is a big plus in this FP, really well used.

Well said!

Alina has great expression and holds my attention through out the whole program, not just the end. Program
Builds, and is correctlly effectively choreographed and packaged. Ashley and others just can’t admit she’s brilliant!

Then, consider the fact that in this new era of "quads, quads, quads", Chan is the only one who delivered multiple quads (including one in combo with a triple); as compared to Kolyada who managed just one; and none ('zero') by the other three competitors.

Yes indeed ... Chan won the "battle of the quads" in this round! [A sentence I though I'd never say again after 2014!]

So, all-in-all, if you consider Patrick's performance — both the technical & components — versus the messy performances of Kolyada and Tanaka; and the lack of *technical content* by Rippon and Rizzo, I don't see a mathematical argument for Patrick not winning (despite the very underwhelming skate he put out there!)

[/SIZE]
* Oh, and by *technical content* I mean a lack of even an attempt at doing the 'all-important' QUADS. Yes, that's QUADS plural ... since as I have come to understand over the past few years, at least 2+ quads are what is now REQUIRED to be the men's champion?!?

Exactly. For once Patrick could pull out some quads and none of the other men could pull out more than one. A clean program doesn't change the fact that triples simply do not have as high of a base value as quads do.

If you think that jumps are the only thing that fill a program, then sure :)

No really, it is empty because Zagitova does not have the positions or SS to make a backloaded program work. Alena K. (Russian junior) has a backloaded program and you don't even notice because she has SS that will soon rival Carolina Kostner. Her programs are still lovely.

I think Alina's PCS rise has been the fastest in the history of figure skating. From Junior to beating Carolina's PCS by almost a full point, all in one season with the same program :rolleye:
The judges did the same thing to Julia Lipnitskaya in 2014.

Alina's choreography is too busy, but she handles it well, and her jumps and spins are just spectacular. No, I don't generally like backloading, but it works for this particular program. I'm not sure why some people are so black and white about this. Her PCS is over-scored, but she is way better than most of the other girls (e.g. Kaori, Mirai, Bradie). I love how as the season has gone on and she's now a clear favorite along with Evgenia (with clear technical edge), the hating has come out in full force.

Alina and Mirai were my highlights. I'm so proud of both of them!! Seeing Adam cheer for Mirai as she landed the triple axel was just heart warming.

If you think that jumps are the only thing that fill a program, then sure :)

FS programs are choreographed around jumps

But you're free to claim that this one program is more well rounded than the thousand of other ones
just because it caters to the system more than it does to balance and artistry

Congratulations on a great Olympic debut, Alina! I'm rooting for my girl Zhenya to win the OGM, but I love Alina, too  I'm so happy they both did such a wonderful job! They are made of steel. :)

So now dance is basically an exhibition, right? The medals are already set in stone, as well as 4th and 5th I believe.

ETA: Also, not impressed with the commentator's insinuation that Zhenya and Alina's support for each other isn't genuine. :noshake: Of course they both want to win, but that doesn't mean they can't genuinely like one another.

I think of it as Mirai securing the medal for team USA rather than Carolina losing it. Think about how many people had already handed Mirai 5th place before the event even started.

Mirai is the American hero today. She snatched the bronze medal for her team while making history for herself.

I'm NO WAY a die-hard fan, but I'm nervous for her as I REALLY do want her to win the gold. Like actually I'm more worried for her than one of my faves Yuzuru Hanyu.

Kinda? I don't know how I'm going to survive the ladies single event (or any of the single events...)

Yes. WTT scoring was outrageous and will not happen at the Olympics. Zagitova's base, with landings not as good as Euros, is now 158 with a PCS of 75. A clean Zagitova is now untouchable. Medvedeva needs a fall from her.

Is there any chance of Medvedeva increasing her base value? I feel like if she ups her tech a bit the judges will get excited enough to totally max out her PCS.

Ashley's Tweets! She's exuberant and realistic in the same breath! So wonderful, refreshing, and honest.

She's celebrating Mirai for her 3A and her unstoppable-ness. "so proud of this girl, such an inspiration" :hap10:

Praising Alina for being "technically so perfect," and then later saying "she killed time in the beginning and then just jumped the second half. It's not a performance. I understand that this is what the system allows but it's not all figure skating is about."

Then: "It's the system and she's working it, you can't blame her it works."

Her spins are some of the best of the competition, her step sequences could be better but are actually a bit difficult, but then I watch all the other Ladies and remember that no one is Mao Asada when it comes to that. Alina does a VERY good job.
