Wow! I think Kolyada will power through to first but Voronov has alot to make up to grab second. Am I correct that the Russian federation waits until the European championship to name the team? Of course, this is all skewed by the IOC's ruling to ban Russia. Still, I think 2 men will represent the country in whatever capacity they are allowed. Despite his GP wins, I think Voronov will have to position himself well at Nationals and Europeans to get that designation.

Totally missed this competition! Surprising results. Samarin, a new dark horse for OGM? Poor Kovtun, 16th? And Voronov only 4th but a 90's score? Seems like I missed something really special.

He can be a dark horse for the podium and realistically a bronze if the top men falter a big time. Otherwise, when every top men deliver, Samarin should be behind Boyang in my opinion, so no medal for him.

The scores are typical Russian National inflation. :)

Samarin looks to win Rus Championship. He has more consistent 4Lz and stronger mindset over Kolyada. Better SS than Boyang. Maybe an Olympic podium threat at Pyeongchang.

An Olympic podium threat with a PB of 253.13?

Given it's his senior debut that score is not unexpected. But his will to land jumps at competitions and improved presentation. It would not be a surprise he goes over 270 at the European and over 280 at the Olympics, especially as Russia #1.

I just looked at the results and was surprised that Mikhail is in second place and Sergei in 4th.
Great score for Samarin. I am not familiar with his skating will have to watch the video.
Not much separating the top two if both are clean it could go either way.
Same with 3rd and 4th only 1.72 difference between Dmitri and Sergei.

Top two lead the field by over 10 points.

Come on Sergei do your magic in the LP. :cheer:

The problem with Samarin is that his PCS won't rise enough for a place on the podium. Even as a wildcard, Misha has more chances than him - today he had mistakes in two jumping passes, and his PCS didn't need a 4-point boost to get to first place.

Samarin can jump but he's incredibly lacking in every other way. His SS are not better than Boyang's. He would be deservedly buried at the Olympics.

My jaw dropped at Samarin's total score and also his 4Lz3T. Having watched video of his SP and that of Kolyada's, I'm really impressed with his jumps and find Kolyada's jump errors not accounted for enough in his scores. Both PCS are high for their skills and artistry but this is a nationals.

Samarin's BV makes him a dark horse at the Olympics, depending on how others do on the days. Is he consistent?
