2018 US Championships Sr Men FS

By the criterias, the team should be Nathan, Vincent, Adam. Ross Miner can't be selected because of one competition.
But since criterias aren't holy Bible.....

Yes for sure, in the men's gymnastics they don't even automatically send the #1 finisher, let alone 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. Usually they will send #1 but they don't have to at all, unless the #1 finisher finishes first in x number of apparatuses - whatever it is it's never been done. But it's such a different sport, they take specialists. I was lucky enough to go to the Olympic Trials and sit next to Chris Brooks' mother (he ended up being team captain at the Olympics) and I learned a lot. They take the people they think will make the strongest team period. Same with women's, but I think if you finish first you may still go automatically, but they may have changed that. When they first stated doing this ages ago it was very controversial and in 1992 Kim Kelly finished 6th at trials and was named to the team, which was then 6 members. She was cut a month later and replaced with someone else without explanation. Anyway I think gymnastics people are used to it and either ice skating fans will get used to it or they'll change it back to whoever makes the podium goes to the games, who knows.

Sometimes the choose someone for just one event such as McKayla Maroney just for vault or Madison Kocian for bars.

How would this work, do you get 1 point for each box you check or are they weighted by tiers?

Ironically it shakes out this way...
Brown t1-2, t2-1, t3-2 for 5 total
Zhou t1-1, t2-0, t3-3 for 4 total
Rippon t1-1, t2-1, t3-1 for 3 total
Miner t1-1, t2-0, t3-0 for 1 total

Now if the tiers are weighted differently...

I dont think its 'how many boxes we can check for each skater' thing... Miner is the winner of T1, Rippon of T2 and Brown of T3 (if you go with numbers of total skaters score) or Zhou (if you go with better general placements). I think Rippon is in the best position looking in general and Miner is in the worst if all T are equally weight. If we compare their results across all 3 T and ranking them, Minner gets 6 points (for one first and two 4th places between them), while Zhou, Rippon and Brown gets 8. If tiers are weighted differently, then Miner gets more points for winning T1 and Rippon for winning T2, so their chance to be chosen rise.
E: I think Chen, Rippon, Miner will get Oly and Chen, Zhou, Brown Worlds

Thing is will the USFed still give Jason Brown a spot despite his dismal performance. They really tried hard to boost him but he didnt deliver. Of course Milner isnt going and Zhou is so inconsistent this season but he's the bronze medallist so?
Not sure about Rippon. Their planned line up is so messed up. Also you know its Nationals when Nathan Chen is getting 94pcs

I hear Adam Rippon is Furious × 10.

But jokes aside, I can't believe how Rippon managed to fudge this up. Also, I really hope Rippon goes to Olympics while Zhou goes to Worlds. Following this season of his, I really don't see Zhou going clean at Olympics.

Sending someone who is 6th at his nationals is not going to do it anyway, people will riot. I don't know if it's weighed differently, how i can be though...

Just wondering how the body of work thing applies..I don't think Jason has any chance but it might clarify things for the others. Now had Jason skipped his quad and done a clean skate it might have changed things and we'd have had a different fight.

Maybe Chen, Zhou, Rippon with Ross 1st alt? You could skate Zhou in the team event maybe?

See that's what I am wondering is it a point for each box, a winner across categories or simply another metric that can be used to assess the situation with a gut decision being made.

Here's the thing in my mind:
They probably aren't going to pick Ross. He's not like Bradie or Polina in 2014 where they were kind of newcomers to the senior circuit and all (yes Bradie had done nationals but injured and never any GPs or majors) They've given him chances and this is the only time that he's succeeded, in kind of the same way that many ladies did at worlds last year: because others didn't.
Zhou may or may not get picked because his GPs were pretty awful and he consistently messes up the short program. That being said, he's the future and he has the technical content to compete with the big shots if he nails it.

Rippon and Brown should be hoping for BOW criteria. Both skaters made the GPF and finished in the bottom two, although Rippon placed higher. However, Rippon did not go to 4CC, Nationals, or Worlds last year because he was injured, and that's a big part of BOW. It's thanks in part to Jason that the US even has two spots, as he finished 7th and Chen finished 6th. They may wish to reward this the way they did with Karen or they may not since he was the lower-ranked skater and didn't medal. For what it's worth, Rippon competed at one challenger event and finished second, and Brown competed in one, finishing second, as well as the US championships, finishing third.
For the first tier, I think Jason has the advantage, as their GPF scores were only a point apart, and Jason competed at worlds and did well. This being said, Rippon's score here was two placements and 13 points ahead of Brown's.
For the second tier, I think it's a toss up. Although Brown has more competitions in this tier, Rippon has more medals and a higher score. That being said, Brown didn't really bomb out of anything. He just kind of... made mistakes that affected him, but he didn't Pogo out of anything.
For the third tier, Jason clearly has the advantage. He went to two competitions and medaled at both of them, with higher scores than Rippon had at his one competition at each competition of his.

Who I think will be on the team:
Chen (definitely)
Zhou (the future, medal chances if he gets it together and everyone else doesn't)
Brown (BOW)
1st alternate: Rippon
2nd alternate: Miner
3rd alternate: Hochstein

Send Jimmy Ma to the Olympics!

I've already had it linked to me by a coworker and a family member, both of who asked me if I was there and if it would be at the Olympics.

Is it going to be announced on TV somewhere, or are they just putting out a statement?

They will text the athletes first to give them time to get "camera ready," so maybe we'll get a spoiler then?

Jason actually got passed in PCS by both Nathan and Adam in the FS, after winning it in SP. Try to read those tea leaves. :drama:

Honestly, I don't see BOW bailing Jason out at all and it shouldn't. I don't think Adam should either, but I think it most likely will. I think Vincent will and should go.

Ross may be the Castelli/Tran of this season. I hope he gets something, unlike those two.

I've finally seen the performances and I'm beyond astounded by Ross Miner. Those PCS should be even higher! Such great transitions and skating skills, and he feels the music so well. A well well deserved silver! :clapper: :luv17:

So sad to see Adam struggle. The nerves got to him. I don't understand what happened at the end, he doesn't look hurt, just like he thought he can't do it and kinda gave up :sad21:

Nathan was amazing technically, nothing unpredictable. I don't hate the costume but I hate his PCS inflation even though it's at nationals - it's just too much, he doesn't even need it

Vincent... I'm honestly appalled by the way that he skates. He does these quads all over the place, barely any are fully rotated, and he has no real emotion in skating: it's all taught, fake, predictable, robotic, empty.. So disconnected from the music - the Come What May part?? Doesn't match the tempo, the emotion, nothing :slink:
And he beats some really good skaters just by having an enormous base value, I hate that about men's skating. For that program to get high 8s in PCS, even at nationals - disgraceful imo

Ooh! What channel are they going to be on?

I have no idea. I took a backstage tour, and Kim said that the selection was like choosing the new Pope and instead of smoke, it's texting. She specifically referred to the Ladies decision, so maybe they needed more prep time? I can imagine Adam would appreciate a similar window, if appropriate. :V

I am a fan of his and I like his programs generally but I always wonder what's with these "forward crossovers" [I don't really know the proper term] he does lots and lots of in all his programs. Are they a good thing?

As for the debate, I really see no reason to put Adam, even less Jason on the Olympic team. I can clearly see why they might be the best bet for Worlds, but none of them is a possible Olympic medal hopeful like Ashley was in 2014, and there is no reason to believe they won't implode at the Olympics either or with certainty do significantly better than Vincent and Ross would be able to. Vincent and Ross earned getting to go. The only possible concern is the team event but even then I am not sure if Jason or Adam would make that much of a difference there.

It's heartbreaking for them, sure, but then it would be equally crushing to leave one of the other guys off the team.

I hope the USFS goes with the podium, as they did with the ladies, and send at least Adam to Worlds [not sure if they can send Jason with his placement here].

I am begging for someone please us here when it gets about I have to go into work and I can't keep checking my phone
