Yes for sure, in the men's gymnastics they don't even automatically send the #1 finisher, let alone 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. Usually they will send #1 but they don't have to at all, unless the #1 finisher finishes first in x number of apparatuses - whatever it is it's never been done. But it's such a different sport, they take specialists. I was lucky enough to go to the Olympic Trials and sit next to Chris Brooks' mother (he ended up being team captain at the Olympics) and I learned a lot. They take the people they think will make the strongest team period. Same with women's, but I think if you finish first you may still go automatically, but they may have changed that. When they first stated doing this ages ago it was very controversial and in 1992 Kim Kelly finished 6th at trials and was named to the team, which was then 6 members. She was cut a month later and replaced with someone else without explanation. Anyway I think gymnastics people are used to it and either ice skating fans will get used to it or they'll change it back to whoever makes the podium goes to the games, who knows.
