2018 US Championships Sr Men SP

I respectfully disagree. He has difficult transitions, wonderful edges, and speed. Great posture. Chan is better. But, is anyone else? Shoma and Kolyada might be at the same level? Jason is great but does not quite have the same speed (his edges are wonderful).

But, I guess you are entitled to your opinion. The judges and most fans don't agree.

Well, most fans would never dare blaspheme Hanyu.

I don't see the edge quality you speak of, and his posture is generally poor though improving. He is fast though, I'll give him that.

 That was that. Anyways, ladies tomorrow (the real heartbreaker). I need to stock up on my snacks.

Huh? What about Vincent? Don't count him out! He has a good chance to be ahead of Jason in the free program.

Sure, I personally hope that Vincent joins the Olympic team along with Nathan and Adam, but oh well, but I don't recall he has delivered a clean FS for once this season. Though I remember how he overturned the flow against him and grabbed the Junior World title last season.

I'd just like to say how much I LOVED this event. Anyone who says that US skating is going down hill is clearly not paying attention. I'm so proud of our skaters and I can't wait for the free skate.................

Adam looked sophisticated and world-class! Gorgeous lines and extensions!

His body is so lean and sculpted this season - it makes his skating all the more polished and refined.

Time to get ready to sleep, hope my phone doesn't reset and delete and restore pics (For like the 7th time in almost a month and ever (And since then I've been scared when stuff starts to buffer or not stop when I press stop to end a video recording)), watch videos on the Food Network website, and be excited for the short dance and ladies FP.

Yup. He's a great performer but when you remove that, his program is very empty and there are many, many more complex ones. Jason's for one. But it's Nationals and when they shoved themselves in the corner by giving Zhou 42...

If you remove that, do you even have a program left?

Rippon has great technical qualities - solid skating skills, great amplitude and extension on jumps, and better spins than anyone but Jason. There's a reason why there are non-jump elements in these programs. He's so crisp and polished, his skating is exactly what GOE and PCS are meant to reward. Base value is what rewards difficulty.

I mean I LOVE Jason but Grant was better then him tonight. I know it's only a point but it kinda bothers me...Grantbhad the skate of his life!

It’s not just a point. I think that non-call saves him about 3 points. Otherwise he’d have been 4th in a virtual tie with Vincent.

Men and Dance, yes.

Just keeping it honest...

:slink:

If Grant can beat Brown and delivered two perfect 4Ts and two perfect 3As in FS, he should go to the Olympics.

Again, this myth that Hanyu has superior skating skills. They're good, like 8-range, but they're not even at Shoma level, much less Chan level.

I could maybe take this if you only mentioned Patrick, but Shoma? Shoma barely shows any of his skating skills with his constant 2 footed skating and crossovers. And this is not a slight on Shoma or trying to hate on him as I do like him with his musicality and natural intense aura, but I don't think he's really displaying the best of the best SS.

I honestly don't understand all the hype around Rippon. Maybe if that's the skating style you prefer, sure. His style is not my cup of tea, and he is not competitive with top men who have quads. He's like a male version of Ashley that skates around looking like a diva. Not fair to skaters like Chen, (and now most recently) Zhou and internationally Hanyu, Shoma who skate their butts of trying to push the limits of the sport while still remaining elegant and refined.

So because he's not a medal threat, or pushing the limit in terms of jumps, he's not worth the hype?

No one here is saying he's going to be up there with Shoma, Chen, Hanyu, and Javi. News Flash: THAT'S OK.

BTW, Vincent has been very inconsistent this year. Part of pushing the tech. Hanyu has been hurt pushing his tech up. Shoma has had some very stupid mistakes this year, due to pushing tech. They all still placed above Adam if/when they've skated against him.

So how is it not fair, specifically?

The others definitely have better SS than Rippon. But Zhou?? Come on. He is getting better but elegant and refined are not words I would use to define him. But, I agree that Zhou's and Adam's basic SS are at about the same level (Ashley's SS are better than this.. not the best but better than those two). The difference is the performance quality and musical interpretation. He does every movement with pizazz and his upper body movements are among the best in the world. And, he performed a perfectly clean program with beautiful spins. You might not like this program ( I don't) but he sells the hell out of it.

His tech dropped 10 pts so Im thinking an edge call on the flip as well when you see the replay.

No, no edge call.
I was watching the individual elements being called/scored so I'm sure about this. He did have a -1.20 GOE on the Flip.

Well, that was a great event overall! And a plus for me, it was the first one I could watch live and not via youtube stream! Johnny and Tara weren't as bad as expected, but dang, Nathan is getting the hype :eeking:

Grant and Ross(and also Sean) were my favorites of the night! I just had a great time watching them :luv17: I don't want to get my hopes up, but I'd be so incredibly happy if Grant somehow made the Olympic team.

I also really enjoyed Andrew and Alexei. They're so different, but such great talents! It'll be exciting to see them develop in the coming years. :)

Adam was fabulous of course. And I'm glad Nathan did well despite reports of his struggles in practice. He's definitely not a favorite of mine, and I don't really feel much love for his programs, but I have to appreciate his determination and ambition.

I'm a little bummed about Jason's score still, though. It irritates me that he's above Grant and that his UR wasn't called, even though I'm a fan of his. I'm still also not loving Vincent's high PCS, but I guess it's to be expected.
