2018 Worlds Ladies FS

I know watching Alina melt down was awful, but did anyone kind of weirdly enjoy the music triumphantly crescendoing during each thundering fall. It was just a wonderful, horrible juxtaposition. By the end of the program, I was kind of disappointed that she landed the double axel? If you're going to have a melt down, then might as well have a completely abyssal melt down. Honestly watching 3+ falls in 2 minutes is almost as impressive as her landing her usual 7 jumping passes

And now comes all the excuses for Zagitova

There were olympic champs and medalists in the past who competed at worlds in the same year and they at least won a medal. Until now, people claimed how physically and mentally good prepared Zagitova is, well, obviously she isn't

She was on a good streak. It's been a long season. I'm exhausted and I'm just watching the whole thing.

She won everything -- from Lombardia Trophy in September to the Olympics in February -- except this competition.

Were they 15 years old?

She's 15 and has won every competition in this very long season until now. Give it a rest. It happens.

It just goes to show that back loading is fine until it isn't. I bet she could have regrouped and recovered from the first fall had jumps been evenly distributed throughout the program but since every jump in the program was to be completed immediately after it was too much too soon.

Because Eteri seems to manufacture these machines? Both Med and Alina have turned out very strong and looking at Trusova's WJC performance, there isn't anything that stands out as a warning sign that Trusova won't do well next year on the senior circuit.

And as to why Alina can't win Gold again, if both of them bring it (and that in the context of today I guess is a big if) then I have a difficult time seeing how Alina wins (or any other non-Quad girl). A 10+ pt TES is just not something you can overcome given the chronic overscoring in PCS these days. Of course if someone implodes, a la Alina today, anyone can win obviously, but this level of implosion isn't particularly common.

Really? Where was the warning sign that Zagitova is going to bomb like this at worlds? Where was it when people predicted Medvedeva to win olympics? People said few years ago that Radionova is the next olympic champion, where was the warning sign that she won't even make the team? ect. ect. It's an unpredictable sport. Things change all the time. Today you're top, tomorrow you can be flop. You grow, you lose jumps, or you get injured, or you lose motivation, ect.ect.
People still don't get it :palmf:

Wow. Congrats to the medalists—Kaetlyn for her first world title, Wakaba for her first world medal, and Satoko for her second!

She was on a good streak. It's been a long season. I'm exhausted and I'm just watching the whole thing.

Yeah. The letdown is totally understandable. Hard to think of an Olympic champion who skated better at Worlds than the Olympics? Most simply skip because they’re exhausted. Kristi Yamaguchi was fortunate that post-Olympic Worlds was taking place in her hometown, as their support really motivated her. It was extremely tough for Yuna Kim at 2010 Worlds, and she only escaped with a silver because everyone but Mao bombed —and Mao was obviously motivated by her Olympics experience.

I could not get a last minute ticket unfortunately that would be affordable for me, but boy... re-watching the pure drama scenario unfolding after getting back to the hotel was something else.

Loena was absolutely fantastic - for me, she has it all in regards to developing into superstar: poise, presence, attitude, solid technical basis, an obvious drive and fire in her performances. She is a breath of freshness air, with wonderful feel of the music and rhythm, a natural feel in her control of movement, not rushed or hurried.

Bradie was great as well - she only needs time to flourish and estabilish herself as stronger competitor and performer. For me, she has a natural elegance in carriage, this statuesque presence and attack that elevates her work. Yes, she is not a natural-born 'artist' or 'dancer' out there, but she keeps on with good effort in being solid and making it into something positive as a result, which I appreciate.

My heart broke seeing Alina's reaction... One does not have to be her fan to feel compassion about her falls and tears following - like MaiKatze said, she really does evoke sort of motherly feelings, I am very impressed after seeing her live in SP and regardless if I like her program alone or not, she really wants it, I can feel the determination flowing through her skating, the purpose to bring her best, which she unfortunately failed to do today. She strikes me really as a perfectionist and I hope she will keep on good work, maturing and developing.

Carolina... What could be said? To be honest, I did not expect a medal before FS, even being in Italy and leading after the short. It was a great set-up for a win, but only if she had consistency in her FS. Still - she is an example of a skater (only one aside of Patrick Chan for me) who makes music sing through motion, who becomes one of instruments in the orchestra, not on the top of it. She may not have control of her jumps and consistent quality of them like before, but overall polish, impact and maturity of her skating, performance did not disappear anywhere and won't be forgotten. For me, she brings some old charm, elegance, this classical image of skating that calms me, makes me feel the magnitude of the music, movement, appreciate the detailed quality of it, getting lost in a moment created, even if not a winning one. I am happy though to have witnessed a glorious moment of that SP after which I and the whole row I sat in cried - she evoked something inside that responded to her sensibility and matched level of emotions she put inside of that program. For me, Regina through and through who I will remember because of what she brought into skating world, not because of what she couldn't deliver.

Satoko's story ended with medal here is the most moving thing. A year ago I wondered where she is heading and if she will be back, now she is back and more sound than ever. Another example of a skater with purpose for me, an ability to transport people into space she ceates within performance - her skate was not perfect today, but its level of emotional engagement, balance, carriage, intricacy infused was so impactful, driven, just floated around. Like in SP, her level of movement control in giving out musical nuances, the organic quality of expressiveness of rhythm through her body, skating and projecting so much bigger than her statue were just exceptional. She points my attention to non-obvious things, aspects that are not 'in-your-face' and require more subtelty and attention to understand. She is one of those skaters that holds a moment and makes it last in memory.

Kaetlyn - I have to say that aside of a stepout, the performance overall was for me even better than at Olympics. It was poised to the point of being 'mean' with this fiery expression, this look in her eyes. She wants it - and wants it badly, this hunger, desperation, will were all poured inside today's performance. The step sequence and choreographic one were just otherworldly today, with fire ignited inside of every movement. This character, music and attitude were the best thing to gear her with - for me, it pushed her and her performance ability to new heights, channelling her powerful, explosive style and carriage into something compelling, sensual and alluring. She magnetized me with her look, confidence, attack. Like it was at Olympics - In their faces, girl. She has done best she could and if others failed to raise to the occasion, Kaetlyn is the last one to blame. The ignoring thing is hilarious to see though, but it is a testament for her worth of some sorts for me.

And Wakaba - now, this is how champions are made: through difficulties and how they are battled. A new queen and Bond girl to remember - I am over the moon to see this triumph of powerful skating, a skating so character-driven, with purpose and devotion. From power walk, through sass and command, to punch and punctuation given to little accents and gestures - she embodied the theme and made it her. Hard off, really

Is Trusova old enough to be senior next year? I thought she had one more year of juniors?
Also huge congrats to Kaetlyn, love her!!!

Gloating at someone's misfortune is never a good look. If you're talking about Yuna, she competed in 5 total events in 2010 and skated a clean LP once. Alina competed in 10 events counting the Olympics team event, skated a fully backloaded 7 triple program, and was consistent with it 8/10 times. That's pretty damn good.

Uhm, what excuses? People are stating the fact, she's tired, she's 15. People have also stated that all the other skaters are tired too, that's why this event was not clean. People have also pointed out that Yulia was 15 as well, which she was. These aren't excuses. It was heartbreaking when Yulia fell, it is heartbreaking that Alina fell. It's also heartbreaking when Wakaba, Kaetlyn, Satoko, or ANYONE else falls, because figure skating is their entire lives, and not the spectators' but we can sympathize with those feelings. Well, most of us, anyway.

Honestly, it's probably better to not know. TAT is nuts, and yeah she's elderly. But her comments are out of line most of the time, towards Russians and non-Russians.

She has grown 3cm since the Olys and Eteri made her skate at shows
Bad luck for Alina, her growth spurt is occurring right now. In her very recent interview she told she's growing up and feels she's having 'some problems with jumps because of that'. She just had no time to accommodate her technique. Add to this a bad flu she got after the Olys and extra pressure after Medvedeva withdrew and left all Russian hopes on Alina's shoulders. No fault on her part, just unfortunate combination of many things. Sigh.
